Ranger Pets: Inconsistency

Is there any reason why ranger unrelated to their bought and locked elite specs can use pets of different elite specs/expansions?

core ranger running around with gazelle (PoF) and smokescale (HoT)druid runing around with PoF petssoulbeast running around with HoT pets

as powerfull as pets became for both expansions they should be considered as any other classes weapon locked to their respective elite spec.

if not im open for reasons why this big inconsistency is a thing.

Pets are independent from elite specializations. It only appears to be an inconsistency because expansion pets are, generally speaking, stronger than the core ones. The only way pets should be restricted by elite specializations is if we got a new elite spec that enhances the pets themselves. So far we have yet to get that.Expansion pets being used more is not a sign that there need to be restrictions, it is a sign that core pets need to be rebalanced to the level of the expansion pets. Pets are the ranger's core mechanic, after all, and many people expect that they should just be able to ignore them when fighting a ranger. This should not be the case. Rangers have the illusion of choice with pets. Surely you can choose whichever pets you want, but when you have the majority of them underperforming from the rest, it really limits your options if you want to optimize your build, which is why you see so many expansion pets out and about. At least Soulbeast has mixed that up a bit since we have access to 2 of their skills, but even then, there are some that are clearly better than others.

pets are not really independend from elite spec. for both pve and wvw you need to have access to the maps you get from the expansions. its only in pvp that its unrelated.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you had to still have the corresponding expansion to use the pets in PvP.

They are locked in PvE/WvW because PvP functions differently, hence why there is the amulet system. and why all traits and skills are also immediately unlocked. WvW uses acquirable gear like PvE, so of course you need to go to the expansion maps to unlock them; that is where they are found after all.

As stated, pets have never been bound to an elite spec. There’s no inconsistency.

Having the expansion that they come from is generally required, this is expected for any other game that has expansion locked content.
