  1. Guild Wars 2 | Play for Free | MMORPG Guild Wars 2 https://buy.guildwars2.com One of the most highly-rated MMORPGs of all time. Join Guild Wars 2's enormous community of players to explore, PvP, raid, and build heroic legends ... ^^^That comes from googling "arenanet gw2 mmo"^^^ And this comes from The Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto from 2010: "The first thing you should know about Guild Wars 2 is that, this time around, there’s no question that it’s an MMORPG" https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/guild-wars-2-design-manifesto/ That really goes both ways.
  2. It really does matter. From the little reading I did on the web, no one mentioned expansions, but even using the definition you are giving "you would never have to pay money in the cash shop to buy power you couldn't also get in game in a reasonable amount of time" I think having access to unlimited gold as long as your credit card allows it should fit in that definition of pay to win, you can get every legendary weapon on day 1 of playing, but people conveniently ignores that fact when arguing about GW2 being pay to win or not.
  3. Oh I see, that's the mistake, this is not about how one wins GW2, this is about what pay to win means as a practice. I understand the confusion, but they are not the same.
  4. I don't know about WoW, and I don't know whose definition of P2W we are using, but having certain advantages (best mounts, best specs) locked behind a paywall will be considered pay to win by many people, if we also consider the fact that you can have as much in game gold as your credit card allows you to spend I have no doubt GW2 bussines model could be considered pay to win, it greatly benefits people who spend more money on it. I started replying in this thread to the person who claimed they would leave if the HPs for cash feature was not removed as they considered it P2W, following his logic I replied that the game has been pay to win for a while now.
  5. I googled the definition of pay to win and came across a reddit thread, I also read about it on other sites for like 2 minutes, there is not a single definition of pay to win, but I think GW2 bussiness model fits these definitions from different people: -Real money > In game benefits -Pay to win is any system where a player can purchase something that is not superficial or cosmetic. -"Pay To Win" is defined as games in which you get an advantage in the game if you spend real money on items, weapons or features and are thus clearly superior to other players. -In computer games, involving or relating to the practice of paying to get weapons, abilities, etc. that give you an advantage over players who do not spend money You say "So paying for actual content in an MMo is now considered pay to win??" with a laughing emoji, but you are conveniently ignoring the fact selling content does not have to equal selling advantage, ANet could have made the choice of releasing new areas, new skins, more story and new JPs while letting everyone have access to the new elite specs, all the mounts, all the raids so they could farm for legendary armor, but no they locked these advantages behind a paywall and, clearly, many people consider that pay to win. I personally don't care too much, even though I do not have the means to pay this new direction ANet has taken where they deliver paid content two or tree times a year.
  6. Yeah, the person I replied to claimed that everyone has access to every mount and every weapon, which is just not true, some advantages are locked behind a paywall, and some people will consider that pay to win. I share your opinion about GW2 being a buy to play game with a very vast demo version, but I also believe GW2 greatly rewards players who spend more money on it.
  7. I understand, and don't get me wrong, I like the monetization in this game, but I do think it falls into the P2W category. The fact that people can buy unlimited amounts of in game gold by swiping a card is a clear sign to me, the fact that some advantages are paywalled is another clear sign, ANet did not release pure story content, they did not just release JPs and prettier looking areas and weapons, they have been releasing stronger versions of their free to play content. Now, while I do think GW2 greatly benefits players who spend more money on it (like how some people were able to exploit the daily login system by purchasing multiple accounts and became filthy rich in game) I would not know what winning in this game looks like, I don't play this game to win anything. My participation in this thread started by replying to the person who claimed they would leave the game if the HP for cash feature was not promptly removed, which I found so ridiculous that I replied to them the way I did: "The game has been pay to win for a while a now", if they are willing to consider getting easy access to HPs through swiping a card as P2W then they should also consider the other, more blatant and more important advantages one gets in this game from spending money on it.
  8. I understand, my whole reply thread started by replying to the person who claimed they would leave the game if this new HP for cash feature was not promptly removed, following his reasoning I replied that the game has been pay to win for a while now, I was trying to imply that the should have quit the game a while ago. I don't even know what would winning in GW2 imply, but if we are considering giving easy access to HPs as a P2W feature then every other actual advantage that comes from spending real money should also be noted (like the possibility of obtaining every single legendary weapon on day 1 by simply swiping a card), or how people who spent money buying multiple accounts were able to reap the benefits of multiple daily logins (accruing an immense wealth because of it). Now, onto my actual opinion regarding this topic: I do believe GW2 is a game that greatly benefits players who spend money on it, the fact that the amount of ingame gold is only limited by how much one is willing to swipe is a clear telltale to me, but im ok with that fact because for one I do not play GW2 to win anything, this is not really a competitive game to me, but even if I really try to care about other people "winning" in this game through paying money, I believe it is fair that the people who support the developers the most have that kind of advantage.
  9. I don't know, I am not the one complaining about hero points on the store being P2W. This is factually incorrect, there is absolutely no way I can use dual swords on my Guardian if I don't pay real money for EoD, there is no way I can play a Mirage with their godlike PvE dodges if I don't pay for PoF. Free to play players do not have equal access to all equipment, they do not have access to all the runes, etc. Are you trolling? Free to play players do not have access to the specializations of each expansion. Oh yeah? When was the last time you saw a free to play player on a roller beetle? Please if you are confused about what pay to win means, use a confused emoji on this reply so we have a metric of how many of you don't understand what we are talking about.
  10. Game has been pay to win for quite some time now, you can get all the legendary weapons on day 1 by swiping a card. You can also convert gems to gold which you can use to pay for people to clear raids and help you get PvE legendary armor. Specially if fashion is considered the endgame of GW2, you can easily get almost anything you want by buying gems and converting to whatever you need. Let's also not forget the power creep on each expansion (is paying for better skills not considered pay to win anymore?), let's also not forget the paywall to obtain essential content like griffon and the other mounts. I don't understand what advantage do you think someone who pays real cash for HPs would have over anyone who actually plays the game unless you are not considering the absolute avalanche of advantages people who pay have been enjoying for years on this game. Do I like this kind of microtransactions? No. Will I miss you? Also no.
  11. This bug happens to me when I swap builds using a hotkey. The way I deal with it is just use the hotkey again and it has always fixed the order of the skills to what I chose.
  12. Personally, I don't feel the game is pay to win, but I have seen people make the argument that this game is pay to win because someone could have a full set of legendary gen 1 weapons, and as much gold as they needed since day 1 of their journey on Tyria, if they were willing to buy gems and convert them to gold. I can understand how someone could feel that they have won the game in that situation.
  13. If you don't want to pay for two candy corn gobblers you should be able to contact support. I have contacted them when I bought an item by mistake with WvW currency and they were happy to help. I have my candy corn gobbler in one of my shared inventory slots, so all my characters have access to it, there is nothing wrong with it, which makes me think there should be no problem if you wanted to buy multiple candy corn gobblers for your characters, it seems like a very bad choice but if you are ok with it I don't think ANet minds if you want to buy your characters a candy corn gobbler for each day of the week.
  14. But also because they haven't finished working on them, hence the name 'beta event'.
  15. First and most importantly, you ran into a frustrated player. There is nothing you did wrong or anything you could have done to help that person with their frustration, they just decided to engage with you because you made it clear that you were inexperienced in that map, making you an easy target to which they could redirect their frustration. Again, you did nothing wrong and it was an unfortunate event that it happened to you under those circumstances, if it ever happens to you again but you have more experience you may be able to deflect their toxicity with ease. Second, you came into that map when the Battle in Tarir meta event was going on. Every map has meta events and HoT map meta events are known for requiring a higher level of coordination among different teams than most other maps. That person was probably frustrated because the meta event was going to fail or had already failed (usually because of low population, but sometimes because of lack of coordination) and was demanding you to take part on the event or belittling you for not taking part on it. Meta events are fun and usually profitable events, and people are expected to participate on them because of the rewards, but no one is required to do so. For example, if I am working on a collection and the map meta event starts I am sure I will ignore the meta event and just try to complete my collection, I don't care if it fails or not. Third, such toxicity is not common on GW2, specially not on the Open World. It has been more than a couple of months (more like half a year) since I saw anyone behaving that way because of a failed meta event, and people literally ignored that person and continued with their game. Also, if you find yourself struggling to get your necessary HP (we've all been there) feel free to add me in game if you are on North America, I can help you out.
  16. Yeah, that does not mean that they are finished balancing them. If you don't know what a beta test is, leave a 'confused' emoji below 😂
  17. You don't know that. And things can never change, right. I will let the developers of the game I enjoy playing decide if they need a beta test or not, and I don't see any value on thinking "they don't need this beta test to improve their design". If anything, following that logic, I would just refrain myself from participating in their beta testing. I will wait for the finished product before I make up my mind on what I think about their design philosophy, a beta test does not offer a complete idea of how the environment is going to look when the expansion launches.
  18. Thank you, yes. I think that has always been pretty obvious, since the birth of Revenant as a class. It did not have freely slotted skills as core, or Herald. Then it did not get them with Renegade. Expecting them to be a reality for third elite spec would be a mistake. I agree, I don't like the concept of the Revenant class, but it has literally nothing to do with the beta. That's your opinion. Renegade is a top tier solo class for open world, literally second only to Scourge, and not by a wide margin. I don't think this qualifies it as "the bare minimum" but that may be just my opinion, so let's continue. Besides having a top tier solo build, it also has a top tier (second to probably none, maybe firebrand) group content support build with Alacrigade that unlike many other support builds can be used for both raids and fractals and it almost guarantees you a spot in the team, and a top tier dps build for group content. If having a top #2 class (out of 27) for both solo and group content qualifies it as "the best revenant can do is the bare minimum" I don't know where the rest of the classes fall.
  19. Wrong, some people are expecting precisely just that. Just a couple of hours ago someone typed on WvW team chat "these new classes die just like the last ones lmao" ... I mean, yeah, they are supposed to, I think. They can be tested, they may be extremely weak, and it should show on the results from said tests, it's ok, it can be fixed. And it's ok, it can and SHOULD be fixed, be sure to make it loud and clear how weak the BETA test elite spec is, ANET should appreciate it. People who don't know what a beta test is, feel free to leave a confused emoji to raise awareness on the cognitive differences among gw2 players, we strive to be an inclusive community. 😌😌
  20. No we have not, we have seen 6 elite spec BETAS. There is a huge and important difference between a finished product and an unfinished one. If you don't like playing unfinished specs, don't play them; if you have some feedback about the elite spec beta I am pretty sure everyone will welcome it, just don't make the mistake of thinking you have played an elite spec, you played a beta. "whatever this is supposed to be right now"??? You mean a BETA test??? Did you figure it out on your own that the release of an expansion is a lot more fun than its beta test?? Also, regarding the title of this thread "Stop ruining new Elite Specs with trade-offs, cast times and insane aftercasts" those are precisely the kind of things that can and should be fixed after beta testing them. They are not 'ruining new Elite specs' they haven't finished working on them.
  21. Correction: That's what Catalyst BETA is, for you (and probably many other people). If you compare an unfinished spec with a finished one you are bound to be disappointed, nothing new to see here.
  22. Deleting a character you had for so long after playing a BETA version of their new elite spec is certainly not a very well thought reaction 😂
  23. Yeah, I found this game really overwhelming when I started playing, back when Heart of Thorns released. There is this thing in guild wars that what feels to be a majority of people recommend builds with glass cannon stats because 'they are the best' for open world, but that's a very debatable statement. I died a lot, and that was part of the problem, but the most frustrating part was the amount of items and currencies which I still find unacceptable, reading the wiki was not a good advice to me because I could not retain that much information (mind I have autism), but also because there are many many things that are basically trash (specially when just starting the game, where legendaries, ascended armor and material gobblers are nowhere close), I still have, after a few years of playing this game, some currencies and items that I have no idea what they are for. If you saw a somewhat recent guide and followed it, then the good news is that you probably have a good base to start learning the game. If you really did not enjoy the game, then there is nothing to discuss, you tried it, you did not like it, you move on; but if there is something you enjoyed behind all that frustration then I really recommend you to keep playing the game because this is one of the best games many of us have ever played, it has a lot of very enjoyable features that you won't find in other games. For the off chance that you decide to keep playing, I can try to recommend a couple of things: Most importantly, play at your own pace, it's a game and there is nothing that HAS to be done, you already have competent gear. You enjoy exploring but don't like the story? Skip it, you are not missing much. If you enjoy the story, then just play it and use it as a means to get used to your class (I personally just finished my personal story a month or so ago for the first time, been playing since like 2015). Find other people who enjoy the content you enjoy, finding a guild would be the best because then you would have a lot of people who can easily answer all those frustrating questions (what map meta rewards should I get? should I spend or save X currency? what do I do with bloodstone dust?) and after a very little while you will get used to handling all those things that you can't handle at this moment. But if you are not a social player, then just explore the game, you will learn by exploring. I personally am not a social player, the most lasting friendship I made here lasted about 5 days before I decided I enjoyed playing GW2 more on my own, it means that I have learned stuff about this game much more slowly than others, but why should I care about it? I have enjoyed 98% of the time I have played this game, that's what I care about.
