What GW2 really need - New Idea to breakthrough

Recommended Posts

As a complex game, for most gamers there is just so much you can learn regarding mechanics. The vast majority of players will have a primary class, some secondary and maybe a third or forth they can still have a bit of fun with. Before I comment on the consequences of it, let me remind what most of the RPGs are great for: the kick of upgrade. We grind, and grind, and as the difficulty goes up, we face a situation that will demand an upgrade (e.g. gear, skill, level) to allow. Just barely beating a difficulty and having the relieves of upgrades is where the RPGs fun kicks in.

Now if GW2 could combine these two fun sources with their complexity aspect, we would open up to an amazing type of content: runthrough of existing mechanics. Ill explain:

A story mode where you will be temprarily locked with all the professions and specialisations, one by one, where upgrades will be fast paced and highly rewarding.

For example: This story youre an ele. By the end of this map and mission that will take like 20 min, youll be getting constant updates as if you were leveling all the way up to 80. Youll have a taste of what an ele mechanics is like. On the same mission, quickly stronger and stronger obstacles will come and youll be trying to learn the new skills as getting upgrades as you need. Some people will try to challange and go with fast paced high reward way (cutting through the map with the minimum upgrading) whereas other can take the time to build up to a lvl80 like upgrading to finish the map. Note that this type of content would be very repeatable.

I think it's a mistake to assume most people enjoy grinding for rewards they're required to get in order to progress, and that most will not have at least tried all the professions.

You're probably right that the majority have one or a few professions they prefer, but I don't think many people could work out which ones those will be without trying at least a few others. There's been many times I've got a new RPG and been certain I'd like one class or playstyle and then found actually I prefer something I hadn't really considered. I've played a lot of RPGs over the past few decades and I've got a pretty good idea of what I like and why, but it still takes some trial and error to work out how that fits into a new game's systems.

Add in the fact that GW2 starts you off with at least 2 character slots (5 for paid accounts) and that it's very easy to make and try out new characters (you can get instant access to all your skills, traits, elite specs etc. by going to the PvP lobby) and lots of reasons to have alts and I suspect even outside the forum players with multiple characters, even 1 of each profession, are more common than those who stick to just 1 character.

From what I can make out you're asking for an "Endless mode" type of content that gets more difficult as you progress through it while unlocking aspects of your character as if you started from level 1 again?   I'm familiar with this in the Dynasty Warriors series of games but I don't think i'd be interested in it for Guild Wars 2.
