How are the framerates so bad with a good machine?

I came back to the game as lazy peon has reviewed it recently and said it was good. Installed and wondered why it looked terrible and saw it had everything on low. I cranked it up as i have a Ryzen 7 3700 32 gig of ram and a radeon 5700xt.

The game swims from 144fps to 29 fps, the drops are insane.

am i doing something wrong? Whys it playing so poorly for a game thats years old?

tl;dr: Your modern graphics card relies heavily on multithreading and not enough on cycle time, which is how GW2 uses GPU. This can be adjusted to better suit your needs.

No, you're not doing anything wrong. This game simply runs badly no matter what you do or what hardware you throw at it. And that will never change since arenanet flat out refuses to fix their awful engine.

lower character detail limit, lower character quality, lower shadow quality, lower lod setting, lower reflection quality. All these will affect your fps the most

Im rocking Ryzen 9 3200, 5700xt, 32 gigs ram.Im at 20- 60 frames at most and probably average 25 fps 90% of the time. Gw2 runs on a 15 yr old engine that can not be optumized for todays hardware. They choose poorly when they choose this engine.If there will ever be a gw3 they better use a new most modern advanced game engine devised ever for it.
