What profession/specialisation is good with greatsword?

Recommended Posts

I'm a fairly new player, been playing for a month and I managed to level up a Mirage, Weaver, Reaper and Daredevil. After some time I found out that having no moblility isn't for me and that I don't really like the look of Mirage GS. And apparently people don't like having Thieves in raids/fractals.I want to wield a GS so that leaves me with Warrior, Guardian and Ranger. A friend told me that GS Soulbeast isn't the way to go (he's a ranger main) and I don't really like heavy armor, but I'm willing to try them out if they are fun and are somewhat useful in pretty much every mode.

I'd say Daredevil has pretty high mobility, and when you have mounts, everyone has high out of combat mobility.

As far as GS goes, Guardian is probably the more solid choice, but warrior isn't too bad either. This will also depend on what your focus in the game is.

GS on Dragonhunter is better DPS but more selfish and only for PvEHow is the mobility? Some people say it really good, others say it's really bad? I'm also afraid of getting bored of the profession really fast, since I heard Warrior and Guardian are one of the easiest.

Guardian mobility is limited. There is no passive 25% speed boost, but you have a few leaps (one on GS) and teleports and can get quite some swiftness, if you want. Against something like a thief, however, it's a joke. Not entirely sure about warr mobility, but I don't think it's massively better than guard.

When it comes to the greatsword:

  1. Ranger gets no mobility from the greatsword, it's primarily focused on evasion and countering.
  2. Mesmer again gets no mobility from the greatsword, it's focused on summoning clones and phantasms.
  3. Necromancer gets no mobility from using the greatsword.
  4. Guardian is alright, the leap provided by Leap of Faith can help out mobility, but it's mostly used as a gap closer in combat.
  5. Warrior has by far the best mobility thanks to the greatsword. It's a weapon designed specifically for the warrior, which is why you see a lot of power warrior using this weapon.

GS on Warrior is both great and terrible for mobility: the Diablo-esque 3 is one of the better weapon skills we have as it is not just moving you, but evading at the same time. Then there is the long “run for a looooong time and slide to your target”-5.

But on the other hand it’s 2 (AKA the damage move) literally self-roots you for it’s very long animation...

Ranger greatsword 3 can be used for mobility. But yeah warrior has better greatsword mobility.

Seems like alot of half-wonky information here.Do you mean mobility only built into the weapon? Or the profession as a whole while wielding a greatswords? Because the answers vary.Just the weapon skills.Warrior. 2 mobility skills. Countered by the fact your number 1 dps skill roots you in place and any movement interrupts and puts it on Cool down.Ranger greatsword is pretty strong with 1 mobility skill and some built in evade frames.Reaper. You know.. nadda movement.Mesmer. Again, naddaAlot of these classes can increase mobility significantly with 2nd weapon set and utilities.I'd choose whichever you have most fun with after some experimentation. Also sounds like you like fractals and if serious you'd want to see who uses what weapons and builds for optimal efficiency on the high end.

If I had to choose GS between Warrior or Guard, I'd most definitely go for Guard. I found Warrior GS a little boring.

Best thing to do if it hasn't already been suggested, is roll one profession and head to the PvP Lobby and practice on the golems. You'll get a feel for how each profession plays.

EDIT: also, I agree with a poster above that DH is a more 'selfish' DPS spec, but there is nothing that says you can't just play a Core Guardian build. I'm not a fan of 'traps' myself, and frankly the DH bow isn't really that great, so I reverted back to core and am having a blast in open world and fractals / dungeons.

I like GS on a guardian.Whirling Wrath (2) is nice for cleaving, Leap of faith (3) offer short distance leap plus blinding. Binding blade (5) is very good for pulling opponents and cleave. It is true that Guardian does not have passive speed buff. But there are several skills that can improve mobility. "Retreat" offer 20s 33% speed boost with a cooldown of 30 s. If you choose Pure of Voice in the Honor trait, it decreases the cooldown to 24 s. If you wear superior rune of the pack, it gives +20% swiftness duration (6th). That way you can have 100% uptime of 33% speed boost.Sword skill Symbol of blades (2) and Judge's intervention (Medi) offer teleportation as well, which are handy for closing gap.
