Should every class have a resource?

Hey there,

In GW2 there are 4 (5 if we count Mesmer and shatters) classes that use some kind of a resource in order to empower their abilities or simply use skills. Other classes have no resource and depend only on their cooldowns. I think both concepts have ups and downs. CD-only system allows you to play more freely, while CD+resource system requires more management (which can be fun). These are:

  • Warrior - Adrenaline empowers your F skills (Berserker requires Adrenaline to access the mode)
  • Necromancer - Life Force allows you to transform and gain new abilities (Scourge uses Life Force to use Shades)
  • Revenant - Energy is used whenever you use a weapon or utility skill (Herald utilities are an exception)
  • Thief - Initiative is used as a weapon-skill resource. Thieves have no CDs on weapon skills
  • Mesmer - Shatter uses clones to empower your F skills

Should every class have a resource?

Okay guys, its wednesday, lets see what thread our 777 slot machine suggests us today...Every ------- Class ------- ResourceWell, unfortunately no jackpot this time, but here goes our topic.

Yeah sure, we will rework classes without resources. Right after ascended, then legendary food, new raid wing, class balance, WoW TBC, Alliances for WvW and ofc MOBA gw2.

It's not necessary. The point of having some classes with a resource and some without is to appeal to two different kind of players in terms of the kind of combat they enjoy. If you look at the cooldowns of classes that have to watch a resource and classes that do not, the cooldowns are always higher on the no resource classes. This is because some gamers are better at watching cooldowns and some have more fun managing energy and would rather have shorter CDs. If you got rid of one system and forced everyone to play the other, a lot of those players would just quit the game instead which solves nothing.
