Colors are still a bit funky. My world is often filled with neon green NPCs and black or purple ground.

When I'm trying on different armor in the dressing room, my boots always go bright purple. Not on my actual character, but the changing room me. And its every pair I try on, but not if I remove all previews. Other than that, no issues, though. Must be some kind of texturing issue with DX11.

Before you go, why don't you jump ahead to Heart of Thorns to get your glider unlocked, then jump to Path of Fire to get your mounts. Maps like Dry Top are not so bad with gliding and a Springer.

    Total game changers.

My favorite mount is the griffon for sure. Most used by a large margin, way ahead of the Springer at number 2 (for those extra high spots). Its almost sad that I don't use my glider almost ever now, but I got some cool bird skins, so balance? Oh well, lol.

Been playing over 8 years.  Never completed the core story campaign on any toon.  GW2 was billed as play as you like -- so I did.  Played some of the story until it got to be boring (for me anyway), and never felt like I had missed out on anything.  /shrug

If you would be willing to test it by leveling other races for their stories, I bet you would find the part you lost interest would be when the story led to the part where everything becomes the same, no matter your character choices. The personal story had always been fun for me. It's when it gets to the main story, and no longer really matters who you are.

Oh. Sir, you have very sophisticated language. Allow me to point out that Rata Sam and Black Citadel are not human settlements, they have their own atmosphere without trying to resemble certain country that I have already been found out to be mentioning too much. I must say, however, that by your way of expressing yourself you seem to be too far up your "kitten" too.

Well then, imagine entire continent of something similar but based on a different culture. And yes, I do understand sarcasm.

It is quite rare to find individual capable of actually presenting argument on both sides of something without throwing random garbage. I salute you.

Like everyone else I have an opinion. It's true I am not particularly fond of the setting it's true. The major point is, however, the reason why Cantha is chosen and will the game become oversaturated with certain themes for monetary reasons.

And you are welcome out of this thread kind sir. I don't see you adding anything of value to it.

Ok, I see your point.  And katanas are cool, so I actually give the devs extra points for that, but 2 or 3 deities and a katana don't change where the majority of the influence is drawn. Yes, the country which-shall-not-be-named

I also like the fact that you specifically came to gloat. I made a point, I put forward my views, I am done. Is there any reason to respond to to three pages of text? Is it as if I don't have anything better to do? Clearly not, since I did just that, but for the last time.

Discuss at your leisure or don't. I made my point. kek

You seem to be under the impression that the only reason to make a cantha expansion is to drain the asian market dry, when in fact, just about everyone I know in the game that played GW1, and my here that I do not, all have wanted to go back to cantha for a long time now. You're focusing on the asian aspect of everything far too much. ANet know this theme foes just as well in western markets, because it has done quite well in western markets. They want your milky white money, too. Its just a place already established in lore that they want to make nostalgia bucks off of, and would like to give a HD makeover. The story is already there, so they don't have to do any world building.

Why not this and creating from a marketing perspective, why not both? I get the point OPs trying to make, theres nothing wrong with thinking from a marketing(sales) perspective.

They tried to hit two birds with one stone (no offence peta) and they might succeed, you can see cantha is mostly inspired from mainland chinese culture (looking at trailers and chats, might know otherwise when i play).

The point the OP seems to be making is pandering to china is wrong. My point is that it is marketing, but in the sense that this theme has existed in the genre for a while now, and it's in pop culture. It's not pandering to anyone but people that like the aesthetic/culture of china. Spoiler: it's more than just the chinese. They are doing what will make money. I'm honestly surprised they didn't jump on the bandwagon before PoF, and that Cantha was our second expansion. I'm not saying it isn't inspired by Asian culture. I'm asking why it matters.

Yeah i understand your pov, so im gonna say it in two different povs, which might be a hard pill to swallow for others.

    1. Marketing pov - Top 3 heavily populated countries are China, India and US. Unfortunately India doesn't play mmos as much, they are into mobile games. And to please US audience, they went woke (no offence), like introducing the agender character. And to please the Chinese audience, they are "inspiring" from traditional Chinese culture. Which would give them a bigger user base.
    2. Another pov - I always liked all cultures, whatever might be the "deal" with china idc, i like their tradional culture, the house structure, weapons, styles, etc. So maybe they got inspired by asian culture and created new cantha? ( Tho i would prefer Japanese/korean cultures more)

The thing is, OP never stated what would have been better. Why is it so off the wall to have an "Asian" expansion, when things like Mist of Pandaria, and Stormblood did very well? When things like kung fu movies, and kung fu panda are in pop culture?

The questioning of this move seems like OP is drawn far too much to focus on the cultural references, as opposed to seeing the game for what it is. Why does it matter which culture the game samples? Isn't it all just earth stuff anyway?

And yet, somehow, through a conscious blindness of the mind, mashing together germanic, nordic, slavic, and celtic ideas into Norn is not at all insulting and entirely endearing. Right?

To be fair, they did have the same beginnings, with Germanic tribes that spread across the continents, eventually forming those cultures. But I totally get what you're saying. Some of these posters are also making a 1:1 comparison between earth cultures, and those of a video game world on I different planet. Just because it's that way on earth, doesn't mean it would be that way on a different planet, with different people, even if they seem similar.

In a traditional fantasy setting you have some form of medieval society (more or less). You have dragons, spells, wizards, oversized swords and etc. Yes, there are deviations and even despite that it can get somewhat stale and boring after awhile. However, you just know what to expect and you expect that everything fits together nicely in this world.

Recently, I was looking at the last trailer released and all I saw was some depressing steampunk metropolis. It looked completely out place and tbh - kind of ugly. An overcrowded dumpster of gray concrete.

I also remember the weapons that came with the purchase of EoD. All of them had a distinct...Chinese look. Call it Cantha or Cathay, it is China. Of course it will look Chinese, but that's not the point. Point is the association I had - these bamboo weapons reminded me of a cheap Chinese souvenir, the type they sell to gullible tourists in discount shops.

And I suddenly came to the conclusion that there will be an entire expansion dedicated to a culture that is kind of out of place in a typical power fantasy with an art style on armor and weapons that I will dislike aesthetically. I remember Mists of Pandaria in WoW and when they announced the pandas I was like - I AM OUT. The areas, the music, the entire setting was just trying too much to be China without really being one. And that was everywhere, it was almost impossible to escape. In a world with orcs, goblins elves and undead there were also the fat pandas. The former April's fools joke that came to be for real.

I don't have anything against China, but I am afraid most developers have the tendency to glorify the culture they want to portray, maybe out of respect or maybe because they think it will attract audience in said country. (Probably the latter)

Question is, why do people want to see China so much in this game? Am I the only one to fear the setting will be a turn off?

Hover bikes, and stuffed mounts, but this is the line. Also, steampunk fits the theme of this game very well. We literally have an engineer class that makes gadgets to toss around in combat. It has also been a theme in MMOs to have a "china" to use as the base for an expansion.

To answer the question, GW1 had a great story take place in Cantha, and people want to see that place in 4k, and to get some answers. Revisiting old places is also very common now. Just ask WoW.

They mostly mean nothing. I gave directions on viewing all of the mount skins from your character sheet and got one. I often read things that aren't remotely confusing or controversial, but still get a confused reaction.

I was talking about this last night, as my friend wants the Striped Grimalkin mount for Warclaw, and we were like "It's year of the Tiger tomorrow, like, there has to be a Tiger mount and it has to be a Warclaw skin right?".

    Edit:

I had thought there was a Dog skin for the Warclaw, looking like a Bulldog or something?  I looked through the Wiki and cannot find any skin that looks like it though.  Makes me wonder what I have seen people riding in WvW, something that looks a lot like the Hound of Balthazar.

If you go to the mount section of your character sheet, you can go through all of the mount skins to see what you like.

There was a period where every bigger drama in all gaming communities was called [XYZ]gate, in mimicry to irl drama known as Watergate Incident or something.

"mountgate" in particular refers to original release of adoption licenses, where at first it was just rng box with a time limited "get them all" package that was absurdly expensive. There was a huge backlash over how predatory the system was, and AN has relented by stating official apology and adding select licenses at 3x the price of rng ones. Whole drama has died out quickly afterwards.

Ah. Just people using words wrong (Watergate was the name of the hotel). I do recall the mount complaints when they were first introduced, vaguely. I just remember thinking "I wish there was a better way to get mount skins ingame."

They already admitted (during the mountgate incident, which, btw, was never actually resolved - the original licenses are still unchanged and there's no select licences for that first selection) that they simply would not be able to sell at least some of the stuff they're offering on gemshop with fair marketing and that's why they are using crummy tactics that prey on people's weaknesses. So, yeah, they at least think that using FOMO approach does makes them more money. And they do seem to be aware that at least some of their products are, in fact, crappy ones.

What's a "mountgate?" Are you saying it like "watergate?" I'm fairly certain everyone uses that incorrectly.

I frickin' HATE PoF. TOO MANY ENEMIES! There isn't a single place you can just stand and enjoy the world without constant and relentless aggro. Not fun or pleasurable at all.

There most definitely are. Get up high. You can't just hang out on the ground all day, but you can go AFK on a pillar or cliff. Also, this was quite a necro right before a ton of new content which will take people away from PoF zones.

Let's all be honest here, most of the Armor sets looks very lame or just plain wacky.

Like the Light armor sets looks so derpy.

I don't like the outfits in gem store, you can't make it look the way you want.

I'm fine with more Gem store armor set skins, it will make more profitable for the developers.

I like the game, but korean  MMO armors looks so much better, it actually feels like you're a powerful looking character.

In gw2 the appearance looks like they are performers in a circus than someone who is supposed to be the hero.

It would be great if they  allow like warriors to be able to wear light or medium armor sets, after all the stats of heavy armors isn't really different from that of light armors.

Make a beta or test server to allow all professions to be able to mix and match all armor sets, heavy armor sets mixing with light and medium armor sets and see how it turns out.

One of the reasons why i don't play light armored professions often is because of how light armor looks, it's so lame.

so yeah. would be better to able to do that.

It seems like they are rounding out some of their newer individual additions to the store, such as foefire, and glacial(?). I have a feeling that Aurene set will see finalization as well, at some point.

OP, I believe that is a marketing phenomenon called FOMO(Fear of missing out). Basically, it's an enticement to buy before time expires so you don't "miss out". Yeah...I'm not sugar-coating it, it's sleazy. Although ANet is more benign about micro-transactions due to being only cosmetics, they will still use these sorts of marketing tactics to get people to buy and keep the game running between expansions. This sort of thing is just general game industry shenanigans.

Fomo is great for crappy products you want to make a quick buck on, but products left on the market make more money over time, and not even a substantially long time after the product is removed.

With the GW2 shop "fomo," it doesn't create a sense of missing out so much, as it does an annoyance of having to wait. I mean, this isn't WoW mage tower levels of fomo, but I can see how newer players would feel the urge to buy immediately.

When you consider that lots of people are willing to fork out cash for a product they can't immediately use (aka those that pre-purchased EoD), OPs idea might have merit to ArenaNet.

I'm with you, though. I think it's a bad idea to pay for a product or service that you can't immediately use or benefit from.

Prepurchases pretty much always come with instant rewards. I mean, why buy a digital product that isn't available yet, unless you were getting something immediately? Maybe if they want to add a collection to every item that makes them slightly better looking (like gear in AC Valhalla as you upgrade it). THAT could have merit. Still seems like more work than what is needed.

  17. I feel like the easiest solution to feel like the gem store is rewarding would be to convert gold to gems, and buy like that, since you would need to play the game to make it happen. My method is accumulate gold doing what I like (very slowly sometimes, but fun is more important to me than just getting rewards), and waiting for the exchange to be <120 gold for 400 gems. I've seen it as low as 102, but that was long ago, though it regularly hits the 115 mark. Save up your gems for something new or returning. Stuff always comes back around.

In doing this, I've made the gem store much more rewarding to myself without changing anything about the game.

This really just boils down to "I want something that requires something I don't care for, please give it to me anyway"

Yes, doing WvW every time you want a legendary is a pain in the kitten, but it's seriously not that big of a deal. Find your own way to make it bearable to you, stick through the bad stuff to get to what you want. 4~8 hours of gameplay is not that big of a deal and legendaries are as hard to get as they are for a reason.

Failing that, try putting yourself in the shoes of someone who is a WvW main that wants the fractal backpack or even just a normal gen 1 legendary weapon. You have it easy.

I wanna say their arguement is that everyone can make legendary weapons, getting all materials doing exactly what they want to do, making the gear "earned" passively, and the status of legendary meaningless. OP isn't asking for it to be easier on just them, they seem to think WvW-ers shouldn't need to explore, or do collections, or anything they don't like. They want to add dozens, possibly billions (idk, I'm not good with numbers) of new ways to get all mats for legendaries. That's smart game design, right?

The focus of my questions is more about the general health of the game modes, and for players who enjoy those game modes.  What good does it do a competitive mode when a non-competitive player comes in and that player doesn't want to be there?

If this were Raiding, and a player who didn't want to raid, but wanted raid legendary armor, they couldn't really do it without a minimum investment of time and energy.  Unless they have stacks of cash/gold to buy their armor, they need to play, and most teams aren't going to want someone who isn't actively engaging in the game mode holding them back.  As in, if you don't learn how to Raid, you aren't getting Legendary armor.

So why do WvW players want people who do not like or enjoy the game mode playing it?  Why do you want players 'dumbing down' the player base?  Why is it okay to join WvW to NOT WvW?

It's a cosmetic reward, and one of the more prestigious ones in the game (legendary gear in general). The point was to have people playing all aspects of the game in order to craft the best items in the game, with some of the most unique skins. The purpose is to take you out of your comfort rut, and put you into the core aspects of the game (collection, competition against player, and exploration). Legendary weapons are supposed to be a difficult task. Simply playing the game in your own personal, limiting fashion should not offer up the absolute best gear the game has to offer (ascended gear with swappable stats, and free transmog).

I mean, if it were purely up to me, I would package LWS2 with core, LWS3 with HoT, and LS4/IBS with PoF for the sake of keeping content together in a way that makes sense and is more consumer friendly.

This makes sense, and might entice some new/returning players with proper advertising. Getting a bit more for your money could be the push someone a bit bored with the things they've been playing, and/or looking to come back to GW2 needed.

You're spot on OP. The overwhelming-ness (is that a word?) does drive people away in the sense that "I could be doing something else rather than working out what I'm meant to be doing next". Players have a similar experience with other games like LoTR Online, and Star Wars: The Old Republic. It's easy to feel lost after you've just found your footing after the mamin storyline, feeling like you need to build your familiarity back up again. And if you're interested  in the story, it helps to have things 'packaged' in such a way.

    Also, Danikat nailed it.

Really disingenuous to say something like this, and a bit confusing as to where this angle came from 🤐

It's not. Gut feelings when trying to decide between which video game you want to play are always better than spending your time like Jim Carey in 23. If you read the rest of it, you would have known that came from me saying to play to 80, finish the story, and decide right then and there where you want to go next. It's a video game. Do not overthink it. Play it.

I recently got my wife into Guild Wars 2 and she loves the gameplay and it’s story.

Despite this, she found it very convoluted and messy trying to figure out what to buy in what order. Whether to play the living world or the expansions, what is the difference etc.

I thought it may be an excellent opportunity once the Dragon Cycle is over, after either EoD or LW S6, to change the model and sell GW2 with all expansions, and all LW seasons as one product. Perhaps rebranding as ‘Guild Wars 2: The Dragon Cycle’ for example.

This could be how all new players coming into the game begin their Journey and eliminate the very messy model of releasing seasons for free initially, then selling them individually on the gem store.

Just a thought and looking forward to EoD!!!

Overthinking will lead to inaction. Sometimes, I stare at my computer thinking about what I want to play, and just walk away 10 minutes later. The best times I have gaming are when I play the first game that comes to mind, and live in that moment.

Your wife needs to start playing the game, and buy the next thing she wants as she needs it. It will be easier to choose when you're just doing, and not making a spreadsheet of enjoyment and entertainment. Finish the main story, and give yourself 10 seconds to decide where to go next, and never question yourself.

That said, expansions bring much more than LW stuff. Maybe a good point to start would be looking into the e-specs, and deciding which one you want, or just choosing PoF for the mounts in order to make everything easier.

  23. I'm fairly certain you're talking about rewards, while thinking about endgame. PvP is endgame. Raids are endgame. The content you do is endgame. The things you get for doing those things are rewards. Horizontal progression makes endgame content the actual endgame, not a gear treadmill.

If you aren't having fun with PvP, raids, strikes, or meta events (or the always popularly tedious world completion), this game might not be your home. If fashion wars is your game, and you don't like the fact that a lot of skins are obtainable through the gem store (not even for real money with the exchange), this might not be the game for you.

There isn't even a real complaint, since literally everything in the gem store can be bought by doing anything you want to do in the game. Are you upset that the raids can reward you the skin you want, just not from a drop?

You're completing world exploration for legendary weapon creation, or a ton of gold, which can be used to get anything you want from the gem store.

You're looking at the game through a negative lens, and seeing problems where none exist. This game give you more options that most others MMO. Some people like doing the activities at the end of leveling, and some like constantly having their progress and achievements diminished for the sake of bigger numbers, and keeping people logged in to get the exact same things they just finished getting over the past 4-6 months.
