A New Ecto Casino for EoD?

Recommended Posts

Could we have a new ectoplasm gambling shack for End of Dragons as a gold sink and a source for Supreme Runes of Holding? Maybe even have a meta achievement for getting the 100 rolls achievement for all: Tarrktun, Sandstorm, and whatever the third one is going to be.

I really want something productive to do with my gold. That would do. I honestly cannot think of a better way to earn two achievement points and the envy of my friends.

Just no.  We just need an alternative source of gaining supreme runes of holding.

Gambling = "playing in the Devil's playground".

I lost 2 good friends to that kitten, they were so addicted they were both converting gems > gold > ectos trying to win back what they'd lost.

Sure both obviously had addiction problems and admitted they needed therapy as neither of them could stop.  Easy for us to say to them it was their own fault but many others out there have addictive personalities and have succumbed I'm certain to the same fate.

The above nearly cost one guy his marriage.

Needless to say they had to completely uninstall.

The younger guy asked the question why in an online game is the storyline rated [PG] yet there is an in-game casino with no censorship for minors?   I couldn't answer.

Its likely not going to happen due to widespread negative feedback.

Ever since they added ecto gambling there's been many sad stories, some of them translating into real life. Gambling is never good for anyone but the house, and in this case the house isn't even real.

If it wasn't possible to convert gold to gems, and used only in-game currencies with no real-world way to obtain them, then I'd agree. But unfortunately that's the route that people with addictions always end up taking after they get their first big win, which is the first taste of blood. After that, its almost impossible to escape the losing streak.

The devs have slowly been moving away from these methods of making money (aside from that one really bad time with the mount skins), because its not only not sustainable in the long-term, but also makes your company look bad in an increasingly exploitation-aware world.

I'm pretty sure the people responsible for those mistakes aren't around anymore, regardless.

As someone who used to gamble i'm quite nervous about this thing being in the game 🤓

I wish I could remove the vendor from Lilly of the Elon. I'm planning on buying the TP merchant also, so I won't have to deal with the temptation everytime I spawn the vendor.

Thankfully I don't play real money poker anymore, only play with play chips now. So now I only experience it with fake chips. I can spend weeks building up a big stack of chips. Then on a bad day I will play risky to feel that dopamin hit, and ofc almost always lose it all.

And even when initially playing smart, you can quickly go into "sunk cost" mindset when loosing just a bit, to quickly trying to earn back what you've lost. The more you end up losing, the more risky you will be willing to play, because you just want to get back to where you were as quickly as possible.

If you're gonna try your luck in the game, I hope for you that you will lose everything in the first try. That willl give you a bad enough experience to hopefully not try again ever, it will probably save you a lot of gold/money later on.

The dangerous part is having had a good initial experience, because then .. You will seek that dopamin hit on a bad day, when you just want to feel something.

For all the good things I have to say about Guild Wars 2's business model, this is still one big major stain.

I wish they would at least let us disable the "features" like it has also been suggested before on this forum.

1) I'd rather have ANet spend resources on something else.
2) The lokh.2695 charity fond for the morbidly sarcastic is always happy about donations and will put them to good use in one of our many projects.

Asks for gambling.

Every couple years when a new expansion is on the horizon and Anet gives us account copies in betas, I at least once go to the Ecto gambler and watch thousands of gold and ectos disappear in a matter of minutes for the fun of it (even if there are small, and sometimes temporary big, wins on the way, if I keep playing I always rapidly lose everything, 100% of the time) - that's all I need to know to never use this feature on my real account, even if I wasn't vehemently anti-gambling already.

While I agree that this can indeed be the case for people with a tendency towards addiction, I would like to add that this does not apply to everyone.

I ecto gamled for the PoF item in order to use it as a merchant, and I only lost about 250 Gold over it, which was a lot cheaper at the time than buying the permanent TP merchant. I've never ecto gambled again after that.

I still don't recommend people with a predisposition to even try, and I really - in general - don't think that gambling should be part of any computer game, really, at least not if it can result in people losing real money over it (e.g., when buying more Gems to turn them into Gold so they can buy more ecto for gambling).
