I like the idea of staying behind, dealing big dmg and having a pet to fight frontline with you or sth.

First off, "ranger" doesn't mean "stays at range, using ranged weapons", that is not the etymology of the term.

Second of all, how is this not Untamed?

Do u know that Untamed with longbow has been meta since EoD launch on pvp?

Elite specs are straight up better than running core classes. The Druid spec ignores the pet and the Soulbeast spec cannibalizes it, leaving the Untamed spec as the only one that vaguely lets you retain the pet and still pretend to be a ranger, but you get this green goo magic aesthetic thrust upon you whether you want to or not.

I wouldn't ignore the pet in competitive irrespective of what spec you use (even core).

Usable competitive pets carry one huge attribute and that's CC ability.  Even with soulbeast, staying perma-merged is a bad idea.

As for OP, you can run LB/LB 'arrow cart' ranger if you truly want to be perma glued to safety.  It's probably helpful to learn melee range though, as pretty much anything has a million ways to get in melee range and then you are in big trouble.

Untamed is what I'd recommend, as you have full pet control and access to all of the ranged weapons ranger has.  Just pick one you like and learn how to position your pet--helps to have ones with gap closers like Smokescale, Rock Gazelle, etc.

Ranged pets are frustrating on Untamed so I'd ignore them unless they also have melee component (Iboga, Jacranda).

Well this has nothing to do with the OP but for PvP untamed was NOT meta for a very long time. Strong but NOT meta. Here is what really happened.

First tournament, Boyce shocked everyone by winning on untamed when people thought it was bad? People screamed for nerfs immediately annndddddd 2 weeks later everybody was on willbender. Even Boyce said it was not the best choice.

Next tournament some teams try it but most give up on it.

Willbender gets nerfed, people scream for untamed nerfs annnnnddd it is not played.

Later other eod professions get nerfed (vindi + mech). Boyce comes back on it (only him once again) and people start immediately asking for nerfs.

Shortly after you have the buffs of spellbreaker. You see a new build spellbreaker build every mAT after that. French worms play untamed for the cage burst but not much for anything else.

Then we have the scepter rework with 3-5 ele and 0-2 spellbreakers comp.

Then finally we have the nerf on the blink + the new signet which makes it meta.

Are you playing on NA? Those are well known players / teams in EU that you have seen if you watched international tournaments. I do not know if there is a channel with NA mAT. I quickly checked Vallun’s channel and I only see Euratian on untamed for the first eod mAT then I cannot find the following mAT.

Im not concerned with pvp tournaments in a 10 year old mmo. I would assume most players play pvp for fun. I don’t think many folks are worried about the builds these players are using.

I can understand and respect that but you defined untamed as meta since the start of eod. Meta is (for most people I see on the forums or in game) defined by what you see in tournament / higher ranked (where people usually go for the "current strongest builds") which is why I was surprised.

Hi,

I didnt see anything about this even though probably someone brought this up already:

When I started playing GW2 I was quite interested in playing ranger. I like the idea of staying behind, dealing big dmg and having a pet to fight frontline with you or sth. I think that is what you expect picking this class.

The issue here is that this theme is lost as soon as you get to the point of choosing an elite specialisation. Druid = support, Soulbeast = suddenly you just loose your pet, Untamed = bruiser / melee. This means for endgame and to be effective you clearly always loose what you expected to have with this class and this made me give up on it. I wish anet would have at least one elite for ranger that sticks to the intended way of playing this. This way many people like me looking for sth else to play instead.

I am demanding change 😄 Please at least make untamed playable with other weapons than hammer (*cough* longbow *cough*)

I will agree but it's mostly becouse Ranger is missing mechanics and flexibility of the other Elites.

Its not bad and can be played really well but to be a good DPS/Support providing the team with more buffs or utility seems to win out. It's funny since other Elites like Thief or Warrior are even worse in terms of providing something unique to the team so it's not  like we are the worst but still.

Take Mesmer's Virtuoso for example, my main for end game PvE. It's very easy to slot in Inspiration and feedback to provide party wide resurrections. This helps way more than similar dps numbers on Ranger.

You may not be concerned as a casual PvP player, but anet is.

For example, Teleburst Untamed was directly nerfed due to edge case uses in plat and tournaments, because quite frankly the average player was never pulling that off consistently.
