How does the game work?

So I bought guild wars 2 on release and went super hard on it with some friends. Unlocked a few legendaries etc. I stopped playing a little while after fractals came out.

I bought HoT and logged in a while ago and saw that I have to ALSO buy the living stories that I missed? Which were going to cost me as much as the expansion did. So I just logged out and never came back.

With the new stuff coming out I convinced a buddy to get PoF with me. It’s on sale for 18 dollars at my local frys...my question is how the hell do I go about getting the living stories that I missed? I seemed to have missed a huge amount of seasons which will all cost me unless I skip them, farm gold, and come back.

The buying the expansions and then buying the story on top of it is what killed my return the first time. I don’t want that to happen again to me or to my friend and cause him to not want to play.

Think of it this way. The cost of the entire game including every living story is cheaper than four months of World of Warcraft without paying for the game. It's cheaper than four months of Final Fantasy XIV. There's no optional subscription. It's not pay to win.

So the question is, what is so much about paying for that amount of content. A living story chapter costs what? $2 a episode? That's not worth (at least in the case of Season 3 and 4) six new zones, six new story arcs, new skins, new mounts in the case of two zones, a new downed skill. If it was all expansions you'd be okay paying it? Or a sub?

MMORPGs make money in a few ways. They either have subs or "optional subs", they're pay to win, or they charge for content. No one is making an entire game for us to play for free. So what's the big deal? The entirety of this game now, beginning to end would cost someone less than subscribing to most MMOs for 4 months. You'll get a lot more than four months of content.

It’s not so much about the total cost. Even then it seems each full season would cost around 15-20 dollars, with my friend buying PoF for 30, then buying all 4 seasons he would need to fully flesh out the story it would be 110 dollars on the high end, that is a hefty price tag.

To compare it to say WoW on an expansion release, 60 dollars and usually comes with a month. I then pay another 15 because I am getting ready to raid, so 75. That month ends maybe we got heroic down or close to it. Another 15 to continue. Heroic for sure down mythic+, mythic raid, some PvP, maybe try a different role and take up healing. Oh damn new patch release new quests, story continues, new raid, new armor, class changes, iLvl update etc. so I give them another 15. So now I’m in for 100 bucks for a new expansion, 4 months of game time, and a new patch which is like a mini expansion at times.

I’m not saying WoW is better, it’s expensive as hell. But I would definitely like to buy the game for 18 bucks, pay 15 for a month and have ALL living story available. If I really enjoy it grab another month, if I don’t then I spent 30 bucks and was entertained for a bit. With WoW I could of quit after the first raid of the new expansion, re signed up now and have full access to everything that has been offered up until now.

Now I said it wasn’t about the price tag, that was just my little rant because I took your tone as condescending which I hope I am wrong about.

I guess I just don’t plainly see the difference between buying the expansion and the living story. Hopefully you can elaborate on it for me a little better as the last time I played it seemed simple, here is the game you bought, here is max level, here is what you can do. If we don’t look at live service games like WoW and FF, I’m used to an expansion being here is XYZ that is new, here is the story, etc.

So I guess in the end my question is what content am I actually getting by buying the expansion and how am I reinforcing the fun by spending even more on the living story.

You're wrong about the price. First of all Season 1 is not available at all. So you'd only have to buy 3 season. I believe Season 4 in total is 960 gems. $800 gems is only $10. So we're talking $12 per season, at least I believe for Seasons 3 and 4, the ones that come with zones. Season 2 is an optional purchase for a lot of people, unless you care strongly about story which not everyone does. The point is if 2 seasons are $24 and the game is thirty, that means the whole thing is $54. Even if Season 2 is $30 and it's not, that only brings the whole total, everything we've played for 7 years to $84. But I think Season 2 costs about $15 when it's not on sale. So that brings the total to $69.

You're saying $69 and comparing that to WoW. You have to buy the game which is $50 and comes with one free month and you also have to buy the current expansion. I think just the game and the expansion will cost you about $60. So with no sub, WoW is $60 and Guild Wars 2 is $69, with no sub. That's the math. The second you enter in your second month of WoW, This game is cheaper.

More to the point though, you have to KEEP paying $15 a month each and every month for both WoW and Final Fantasy XIV. Here you get living story chapters for free as long as you log in.

I'm not sure where you're getting your math from, but it's wrong.

I too picked up GW2 on release date (actually bought it twice because I wanted a different user name) and stopped playing at the start of 2014 due to hardware issues and working full time. It was not until they announced Path of Fire would release in 2017, I decided to get a new PC and get back into the game. I purchased Hearth of Thornes and got ready for Path of Fire. Needless to say, I missed out on Living World episodes and also contemplated if I needed to purchase the episodes immediately.

In the end I focused on the expansions, because of the story offered (finally facing Modremoth and Balthazar). The Specialisations for each profession you only get when owning the expansions. I already had characters on LVL80 and was looking forward to learning a specialisation. Also the Masteries for 'gliding' (HoT) and initial 'mounts' (PoF) that could only be unlocked via the expansions (not talking bout the additional mounts in LW S4).

I didn't even read up on the events that happend during the Living World episodes I missed and just enjoyed both expansions and got used to the game again. I later picked up Living World episodes that I was still missing. I'm still busy wrapping the final episodes of LW S4. So I guess... you can totally focus on the expansions first and pick up the Living World Seasons you've missed later. It's definitely a good idea to pick them up when they're on sale.

When you've been away from the game for so long, don't worry too much about what you've missed in the Living World episodes. Jump right into those expansions and enjoy the game!

So why cant you do the same here as you say to do in wow?Play with your friend through core and map complete level up etc. When you get to season 2 plunk down 16 bucks to buy the whole season, then play through that and heart of thorn expansion+story together. After that plunk down 12 bucks and play through season 3 and the whole path of fire expansion+story. Then you pay 12 bucks for season 4.I think all this would take you guys afew months. All while doing this you will continue to get season 5 for free.

So why do you see wows model as paying over time and gw2 that you pay upfront?

Edit800 gems as above poster said cost 10$, so 1 dollar 80 gemsSeason 2 is 1280 gems 16 80= 1280Season 3 is 960 gems 12 80= 960Season 4 is 960 gems 12* 80= 960

Thank you for this thought out response as to what I will receive in just buying the expansions, you have definitely taken some weight off the decision for me.

My thing is I can cancel WoW at any time, it looks like to buy the expansion and all those gems im looking at going 70 dollars (which is not bad). Right now WoW is 30 bucks in total for all games including BfA and comes with a month. After that one month I could decide I hate the current iteration cancel it and ive only spent 30 bucks. Its more of a money up front for permanence vs I could not like it after a month and be done. I guess a way to look at it would be season passes to call of duty. I loved all call of duty's up until modern warfare 2 and black ops. But every single year I buy the new call of duty plus the season pass hoping it'll be as good as it was. Usually I am let down by the likes of infinite warfare and black ops 4. Now instead of spending the other 40 that was the deluxe edition for the season pass they could of offered an option where im paying 5 dollars a month (lowered price because well its cod not a live service) and after realizing it was terrible the first month I did not commit 100 dollars instead I committed 65.

But the price is not bad and I enjoyed guild wars since the very beginning of the first game. My friend tends to be the more stingy one when it comes to money and I don't want him to be turned away by another purchase after the fact.

I do have another question though, I have a lot of gold sitting on my old character, if I buy the living world with gold is it unlocked across the account?

And you can do the same here you dont have to buy it all at once. You play through core dont like it walk away.Do like it pay 16 bucks and play season 2 and hot.Dont like it walk away.Do like it pay 12 bucks play living world season 3 and pof.Dont like it walk away.Do like it 12 bucks play living world season 4 and then continue to season 5 free of charge,

The fact that you already jumped the gun and bought hot long ago and pof recently dont really matter, since you dont have to play the living world season 2-4 to enjoy said expansions ( living world season 1 was were the characters you run around with were introduced and you cant play that only watch a short cut sene in lions arch or the 3 hour youtube video dreamyabbadon did)

I cant go into a store and say-hey I bought a pair of pants here afew years ago and a shirt yesterday you better give me these matching socks and undies for free.

EditA better comparison would be trying to get your friend in to wow now.Having played Warlords of Draenor, Legion, and Battle for Azeroth and having to redo it with your friend and then complaning why do your friend only have to pay 30 bucks for all 3 of those expansions when you payed 100.

The fact that anet have done the same with their expansions as wow now is a good thing you get both of them if you buy the newest one and a optional sub real money or ingame gold if you want to play the missions/map that branches bettwen said expansions.

Your gold is shared account wide, and so are expansions and living world unlocks. So as long as the characters are on the same account, they will all have access.

The same goes for mastery points as well. Once you unlock gliding or mounts for example, all characters will have it.

I hate it when people put things into perspective for me. I can dump $15 into WoW to maybe play two weeks, I can dump some money into GW2 if I've managed that long and more. Hard to beat WoW's dungeon finder (does GW2 have a DF?) and transmogging though. Makes paying for transmutation crystals painful.

Well, to put it in perspective, I don't pay for transmutation crystals. Anyone who plays this game for any length of time, particularly if you WvW or PvP will have plenty of them, unless you're changing appearance constantly. I don't pay for transmutation crystals and never have once.

It's hard to beat WoW dungeon finder, considering that game is centered around instanced content. This game is centered around open world content. It's hard to beat Guild Wars 2's giant meta events. Dungeons are a side show here, not the main course. Given the content options I'd play this game for a sub over WoW, because this has the type of content I want to play and WoW generally doesn't. So the equation really isn't that simple.

But complaining that the seven years of content we got is not worth 4 months of WoW sub is a bit rich, that's all.

Had you not "logged out and never come back", you would have gotten them all for free. Now you have to buy them at the Gem Store. There is no way around it. Best wait for when they are on sale.

When you log in at the release of a new Living World episode, before the release of the next one, you receive it for free.

Oh kitten new patch release new quests, story continues, new raid, new armor, class changes, iLvl update etc. so I give them another 15.

Depends on what country you are in..

Or at least your income, but no it doesn't. That is to say, WoW is still more expensive. If I want to play a game for many many months without continually spending money this game WILL be cheaper.

I had no trouble soloing any of the living story content. I"d offer to help but I'm on my way into the hospital and might not be out for a while. And yeah, we pay a lot more. Fortunately, I got all of it for free by logging in, but since they've stopped selling gem cards at Ebgames I've cut down on gem purchases. Paying 50% more just doesn't cut it for me.
