Mac Crashes in Divinity's Reach since Wintersday?

I'm a Mac player (stop snickering), and been seeing constant crashes if I hang out in Divinity's Reach, ever since the Wintersday patch earlier today. Not noticing any issue anywhere else, and haven't noticed any crashes in quite some time playing regularly so it definitely seems like the patch or Wintersday itself doing this. I can barely stay in the city 10 minutes before a hard crash (something like "GW2 has a serious issue and must be stopped", with a Submit to Anet button) Anyone else / any tips?

  • I am having the same issue. Repaired client twice. Hard crashes in Divinity's Reach.
    (this is very new; been using the Mac client without issue for years)

    Hmm...I'm using Windows 10 and I was about to login, now it's asking me to repair game data oO wth...first time it happened to me.
    To note, I never crashed. I played normally and with no issues. Now I started the client and it asked me to repair the game.

  • Oh yes, had this as well — before getting in game, immediately after the Wintersday patch, the client wanted to repair game data.

    @Blur.3465 You're runnng a Mac client in Windows 10? o.0

    Yep yep, same thing! So I guess it's something on their part? It's weird as heck. I am scared to enter Divinity's Reach now XD
    And no, I'm running the Windows client, but thought I'd pop in to say I'm having the same error on a different OS

  • After the Wintersday patch I can't even play the game, it loads me in and within seconds I crash out.

    I repaired game data, and that crashed on repair.

    I even reinstalled the whole game, still crashing. Definitely on their end.

    on Mac OS X 10.14.6

  • I'm on a Mac and also having repeated crashing on DR (somewhat glad I'm not the only one...). I can't remember the last time I had issues with the Mac client. Pleaaaase fix this, ANet! There's a bunch of orphans in DR who need meeee!

    OS: macOS Catalina 10.15.2

  • Same here. Mac OS 10.15.2 In WvW. HUGE lag and crash (8 times and gave up) Tried all usual fixes, nothing works.

    I don't even know what the hell happening to my client. Can't even update the game, launcher keeps crashing this is just straight up annoying.

    MEH !!!

  • Come on ANet, we want to enjoy Winter fun too! :'(

  • I'm having the same issue. I tried to log into my main, who is currently sitting in Auric Basin. Received the error within seconds and game crashed. Tried logging into an alt in Divinity's Reach. Same thing. None of my toons could do anything before it crashed. x-x

  • Yep, same issue. Mac client, sometimes I can get in for a couple of minutes before it crashes, and other times it crashes during the loading screen. Up to date OS and so on. Might be nice to hear something along the lines of it's being looked into. At this point, the game is completely unplayable.

  • After the Wintersday update, I get constant crashes while doing a story instance in Sandswept Isles.
    Both MacOS and GW2 are on the latest version.

  • My wife is having the same issues. I run GW2 on a windows pc, and am experiencing no issues. She runs Mac OS, and ever since updating for wintersday, is getting this error crash as well. The time period she can stay logged in varies a little, sometimes she doesn't even make it past character select.

  • This is the reply I got to my ticket:

    **Hello (...),

    The recent update to Mac OS, named Catalina, implements some new security rules that automatically block the install of programs from unknown sources. Unfortunately, Guild Wars 2 is not currently recognized by this system, and so users can frequently encounter the error when trying to install or launch the game after updating to this version of the operating system.

    However there are a number of ways to potentially fix this, but the easiest (and safest) one we have found is to simply open the program by Right Clicking on the executable file and selecting the Open option the first few times a user tries to launch the game or launcher, instead of running it by double clicking it as one commonly does when trying to open a program or other file. This will still prompt the user with a brief warning (shown below,) but it gives them a convenient option to bypass the security measures and allow the program to be installed. It will also allow the program to open without problems in the future, even if a user double clicks it instead.

    It didn't actually make any difference - I'm still getting frequent crashes in all maps, and in DR it's virtually unplayable.

  • I'm running Mojave version 10.14.6 with the same issue, so it can't be Catalina security that is the culprit.
    (may cause problems though, just not my problems) =)

    I have a ticket working too. We are still going through the "repair? security exception? delete prefs?" phase.
    I will post if anything works/fixes it.

  • Latest hard crash was loading screen even before getting into Divinity's Reach.
    crash.jpg

  • Also on Mojave 10.14.6, and installing/updating is not my problem, the game crashes after I login and start playing...

  • Mac 10.15.2. Game still crashes. Update today (Dec 19) did nothing. I play WvW. I can't get near Wintersday events. Please fix.

  • I cannot get anywhere where there is any heavy lag. Some areas that don't normally have heavy lag all the sudden has it and boom I'm crashed. Played for several years in all types of heavy situations mainly in WvW huge battles with no issues but If someone near me cast's an area animated buff, it's most likely I'm crashed. Ever since this Wintersday Update. I've tried several things with GM's over like 25 emails and nothing works. I hope after Wintersday things go back to normal. For now, I won't bother logging in till I see a solution posted up here.

  • OK, on my ticket, we've gotten past all the possible things to do on my end.
    (repair, kill prefs, switch to new user acct, re-install client, etc.)
    I've been submitting the "ArenaNet.log" with each subsequent crash, so hopefully that will help them.

    Here is my lastest response, fyi:

    Thank you for that information!

    This issue is currently being looked into, and we thank you for the logs you provided. We currently don't know when the issue will be resolved but the developers are working on getting a fix as soon as possible. We're going to keep this ticket open so that it is looked into, and an update to this issue will be posted on the Guild Wars 2 forum page under updates.

    so, moving forward! =)

  • Hi, same for me, we've gotten past lot of possible things and no change, always crash everywhere since last patch
    Hope they will find a solution...

  • Same issue here. It's been four days and still no fix. Help!!!

    I'm having the same issue on 10.15.2 and haven't been able to play at all since the Wintersday update. They don't seem to have updated the game itself in ages, considering the most recent OS listed for selection in the support ticket dropdown menu is 10.10 :#

  • I was able the get through the first POF chapter by changing my graphics settings. Before I couldn't get past the first fight. Since the error logs mentioned missing textures, I changed my texture, shader and character model quality from high to medium and was able to play without crashes. Not sure if it was patched, the changes worked around the problem, or I just got very lucky. If that fixes it the issue probably has something to do with missing high quality textures.

  • Same Issue ... Crashes continually on the Mac Client .... Cannot even play anymore ....

  • Ok, a small hope for the mac players
    I tried also like Lord Warfin said, with low texture, everything in low image quality. I didn't crash with this, I tried during 2 hours, in PVP too (3 times) . Probably the good way for the moment but we are waiting a patch for solve this problem;

  • From the e-mails I'm getting it seems they are convinced it has to be a hardware problem on my end...even with tons of other people having the same issue, after the same update. I finally gave up and tried doing a clean reinstall and now I can't even download the game without the installer locking up at about 35%. They seriously need to get their kitten together. Every other game I play is running fine, the problem isn't on my end.

  • I don't think it is a hardware problem up until recently I have played GW2 continuously without problems after the last release it is crashing every time I load or do an event At first I thought it was something to do with the Mac OS X 10.15.2 update (a lot of users have this version) but at least one person seems to have a problem with previous a previous version of Mac OS X.

    Here's an error log which suggests it is not loading a file with constants - this produces a segmentation fault because the memory has not been allocated for the data:
    --> Crash <--
    Signal: Segmentation fault: 11 (addr=0x0000000000001794)

    File '0x0': Shader constant 0x46a92c9f ("ppgoboc") has not been set.

  • I wasn't getting the Segmentation Fault. Mine was an Index out of Bounds exception. However, the same suggestion of downgrading a bunch of the graphics options seems to have solved my issue. I took "Medium" on most things - did NOT have to go all the way down to "Low" except on things that had no Medium option (think there was only one that didn't have a Medium option). Saw in a different post (which I can't find again) that some of the Mac high-res files in the Wintersday update were corrupted. So, hopefully, they will either have a high-res fix, or the issue will "self-heal" when Wintersday ends...

  • I switch textures, shadows and shaders to Medium left Postprocessing on High. It seems to work - at least I played for an hour and no crashes.

    External link to settings screenshot

    Looks like the segmentation fault happens after an error of the following top which suggests index out of bounds.

    First This:
    --> Crash <--
    Assertion: index < m_count
    File: ......\Core\Collections\Array.h(637)
    App: Gw64

    File '0x0': Shader constant 0x35037a3d ("ppgobo") has not been set.
    ...

    Then when you reenter GW2:
    --> Crash <--

  • I hope the fate of mac users isn't just to run in low graphics mode forever. The slow response on this issue, and the attribution to "hardware on our end," has been really disappointing.

  • The crashing bug seems to be fixed.

    I was able to play PvP and the story instance that crashed every time.

    Autodetect graphic settings with some turned low or off (textures, ambient occlusion, etc).

  • When I repair the client, I get this in the terminal after it restarts the macOS client:

    XXXXXXXXX$ /Applications/Guild\ Wars\ 2\ 64-bit.app/Contents/MacOS/GuildWars2 -repair

    Is the client trying to get notifications from somewhere that doesn't exist?

  • Same issue here. Mac Pro (late 2013), 3.5GHZ 6-Core Intel Xeon E5, 16GB DDR3, AMD FirePro D300 2GB, MacOs 10.15.2

    Resolved by dropping graphics down to low, then manually upping a few things to medium.

    Sometimes when they start saying 'it is a hardware issue,' it means they have started dropping support for older graphics cards.

  • The problem persists on my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015). The only way to stop it from crashing is to set graphics to "max performance" which turns everything off. Using "Auto Detect" on graphics causes the crash randomly. This is a poor work around and it is certainly not due to outdated graphics card. (AMD Radeon R9 M395 2 GB)

    I hope they identify and fix the problem soon.

  • update: same crash but they are less frequent now... Settings between low and medium.

  • Yes, still seeing hard crashes. Most recently I was just at Vexa's Lab for the daily, and crashed. I've put some of my settings down as suggested but, no permanent fix yet :(

    I have an iMac Pro and I’m still having problems. Pretty sure the graphics card is new enough that it can handle what GW2 dishes. Looks to me like the game is calling for stuff in locations that don’t exist. Probably a typo in the file name string somewhere.

  • You know, it’s kinda crappy that they’re just going to wait until Tuesday the 7th to resolve the issue by removing Wintersday from the game. I was actually looking forward to it this year, but it wasn’t meant to be I suppose.

  • Hi all, I have a message from James Fulop:

    Hey Mac players,

    With the December 17th release we updated the compiler used to build the mac client from XCode 9.4 to XCode 10.2. This was a necessary change so we could notarize the game client with Apple (required by January 2020). Unfortunately the compiler update introduced some new client crashes that slipped by me. We haven’t found the exact problems yet, other than its in our graphics system. With the January 14th release I’m shipping some diagnostics to help figure out what’s going on. Looks like some players are having success by turning down some of their settings. I think just turning down Shaders should do it, but I can’t be sure since I haven’t been able to reproduce the problem.

    If you get any of these crash messages you are most likely hitting what I am talking about. I’m working on it, sorry!

    Assertion: nearDist < HUGE_EXTENT && farDist < HUGE_EXTENT
    Assertion: fabsf(position.x) < GR_LIGHT_HUGE_EXTENT && fabsf(position.y) < GR_LIGHT_HUGE_EXTENT && fabsf(position.z) < GR_LIGHT_HUGE_EXTENT
    Signal: Segmentation fault: 11 (addr=0x0000000000001794)
    Assertion: index < m_count

  • Thank you for the update.

  • Thanks for the update about this - I'm getting quite a few crashes too. Good to know it's being investigated!

    Crashes are happening again with new lunar new year patch. Mac user.

    I also had this problem with mining, logging etc with material gathering. Crash every time.

  • The error messages I saw after the December 17 release indicated missing or mis-indexed high quality textures. Now the January 14 release has it crashing repeatedly again and the error messages indicate something to do with shaders. I'm still using medium quality settings to work around the Wintersday crashes. Haven't tried changing the settings yet again to see if there is a way around this one. Can we just opt out of these special events if it means we can't even run the game at all?

  • Also a MAC user I've had a few crashes pre-lunar patch, since the patch it's only become worse. Can't play te game. Anyone know what's the problem? I've already put settings on lowest

  • It crashes for me 24/7 after the latest Lunar NY patch, all setting couldn't be lower. I played without any crashes before for a long time
    /Catalina 10.15.2 (19C57) MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013) with NVIDIA

  • I had no problems at all before the Lunar NY patch, now I crash after only minutes in game. Whatever the update was, a rollback to the mac settings from before the Lunar NY patch would already go a long way for me.
