Lag Mystery for Technical Sleuths

My partner and I are on the same network and use ExitLag.

He gets super lag (pings at 3k) when in meta events eg. LLA, Dragonstorm, Drakkar, etc. On the other hand, I don't.

With ExitLag, he can manage fractals and raids easily.

When he plays at his apartment, he doesn't experience lag (and he doesn't even have to use ExitLag).

Tried switching ethernet ports used but still no luck. He uses the same cable.

Any suggestions on what else to check? Thank you!

your hardware differences.

His laptop packs more computing and graphics power than mine. So I don't think it is the hardware. Thanks for the reply!

How many devices are allowed on your network?

Your internet provider might reduce the speed on the overflow one.

No limit. Current users are just his laptop and mine. We even disconnected and turned off other devices eg. cellphones, TV, console, (I even turned off the fridge! Jk.) Again, lag is experienced only in heavy meta maps - so not sure what to optimize when joining a map with massive number of players for his laptop. After all, this is an MMORPG. 🙂

Unless you are implying that the ISP is limiting VPN users? Thanks!

If you use a VPN first thing would be to disable it.

Even with hardware differences, it also matters your graphical option. Slow out dated hardware running performance settings (low quality) will out preform a better rig with ultra setting (high quality). Try setting his machine to the lowest possible setting and see if lag goes away. Then tweak to improve. Remember some things like character model limit and quality may affect visual tells in raids.

Can also check speed test, to make sure you are both getting comparable speeds in a browser to rule out throttling related issues to a degree. Be it your ISP or hardware.

If you're desperate, you might also try the Direct X11 beta.  I've heard in-game anecdotal stories that it can help a lot with lag, even though you might be more prone to crashing.  It was hardly under scientific conditions, but it did seem to help a bit with the lag on the slowest of our household's three computers that play.

That is mixing up network lag with render lag.

Given the above, it seems that you've eliminated everything on your side of the connection as a problem.

I suspect, though without much evidence, that the ISP is throttling the connection despite what you report in terms of broadband privileges.

You can begin by performing diagnostics while you and your friend are connected to the game.  The first, and most basic test, is a traceroute command.  Perform it concurrently on both devices, noting any differences.

Most ISPs provide tools for testing connectivity.  Check out your ISPs web portal and use the tools provided.  Note any differences when running concurrent tests on both devices.  Especially note any discrepancies between the ISP tool's results and the results of the command prompt traceroute.

Note:  If you do not know how to run a traceroute from the command prompt, use this:

How to perform a trace route using Guild Wars 2

Note: I am assuming that you have completely cleared any possible problems of your internal network, such as traffic loading of your router, etc.

If there are no problems after the above diagnostics, you are now past a Network+ level issue and the problem is far more technical.  I'd actually have to physically sit at the end-point to troubleshoot from there. I am very certain, though, that you will find packet loss or other traffic degradation during the above diagnostic.

Come back here with the results of your testing and the community will provide suggestions of what to do next.
