Mentor specialization

Recommended Posts

GW2 has a fairly simple way of unlocking new skills and trait. You simpley invest point in the branch. Nothing new and it works just fine. While it is not really anything special as far as the core class is concerned, I feel like specialization should be a little bit more than that, at least lore wise.

HoT and PoF spec kind of appear out of no where. Let's take the engineer as an example, you just finished dealing with Zaitan and all that stuff, great. You're now fighting Mordremoth and in the chaos that follows, you character just "happens" to know how to make gyro and work with them. Same thing with PoF spec, after a while your character just happens to know how to make a holosmith forge.

EoD (or future expansion) should introduce a mentor whose job is to tell you about / teach you the upcoming spec you are about to unlock. I dont want to lock the spec behind a  far away NPC since I am among those people who wants to use the spec ASAP if I have the mean to unlock the spec so ideally, the NPC should be located near the first area you spawn in when entering the DLC. You would basically need to talk to that NPC to "start your training as X " (in our example it would be mechanist) which will also unlock the collection for the ascended weapon spec.

Basically the idea is that instead of your character suddently being able to use the new technology / knowledge of the new zone, you have a local telling you about why or how it works. The way of unlocking the spec remains the same with hero point, the collection for the ascended weapon remains the same but you will just have a NPC guiding you and helping you in your new spec mastery.

I've never met any of these NPC though, I didnt even know they existed

I think you can be forgiven, given that much of what the game contains and offers is not at all obviously alluded to in-game. One either stumbles upon things, or is advised to "just /wiki it". It's great to discover things as you go, but npcs such as these should be practically impossible to miss imho.

As much as I love the game, I do find situations like this to be one of GW2's shortcomings.

When you first arrive in Amnoon you'll be right by Elona Guide Ebi, who also has a special map marker. He'll give you directions to all the profession trainers.

They can't really make it harder to miss without going the other way and annoying the people who just want to get on and use their specialisation without having to go through a bunch of steps just to be told what they as a player already know even if their character doesn't.

But I assume if you're the type of player who wants to know about the lore and the story you're also likely to be the type to talk to anyone who looks interesting or significant to see what they've got to say. If not then I highly recommend it, you'll miss a lot otherwise.

One way they could do this is adding a short message either in chat or as a popup tooltip for those finishing the first mission of PoF and entering Amnoon for the first time to go speak to the guide. Though I agree it probably shouldn't be a priority.

They did set up some of the HoT elite specs with story npcs along the way. Marjory started using Belindas greatsword and set up Reaper. Braham got his mother’s bow and traps and set up Dragonhunter. Rytlock was the first Revenant (did he set up a Rev school off screen afterward?).

In pure of running six or seven characters through the intro mission to the crystal desert, I’ve never noticed that Guide. Maybe because the core game taught me that zone guides rarely say anything useful?
