Show a Link to Metabattle When a New Account First Enters HotM

Recommended Posts

This would help new players acclimate, as opposed to making a terrible build themselves and rq'ing 5 minutes later. It would also help some players have an idea of what people are playing if they aren't in the loop.

Rn the default builds are terrible and new players might not know what's going on. This would be an easy thing to implement also (one would think). Just have a message with a link going to Metabattle.

They are highly unlikely to code a link to a third-party site directly into the game.

Be funny though, they put in the link, MB takes some blizzard money and turns it into a page promoting wow

If the default builds are terrible they should regularly adapt the default builds into good ones for the current patch, not link to external sources. Lack of in-game tutorials is the most widespread issue in the game with the first combo field tutorial to date being a heart quest in End of Dragons (!).

Plus, aside from the very meta and some "great" builds, much of metabattle is also out of date. It's difficult to rely on a source you can't directly control, Anet should not do that .But they should definitely be a reliable source of knowledge for their own game...

The game kind off supports linking of builds, it just needs something like a tutorial NPC that sends you a whisper with the build and maybe the PVP devs update the build every few months on balance patch days.

The devs have never, and will never, physically say a certain build is good or meta. They let players discover builds. The good and bad.

Therefore,  they are not going to suddenly tell players how they should play their class or use a specific build.

This is clearly the developer philosophy they have, so we cannot say you're wrong about their objective behavior, but - the fact there are even default builds in the game when you first join HotM (even suggesting at their application, such as "bruiser", "high damage dealer") kind of defeats the purpose. The way they balance classes in PvE very, very clearly around the benchmarks and performance of top players in Raids/Strikes is also extremely telling of them betraying their own philosophy by anyway still sanctioning/supporting specific builds, just indirectly so.

Again, I agree with you, this is how they actually behaved for 10 years. But even this late down the line maybe it would still do some good to actually teach players anything at all about the game - and inside the game at that. We have an incoming new PvP mode after so many years of the failed Stronghold, so who knows, maybe they will be more flexible about explicitly telling players how to play their game.

Yet they dictate the meta non the less, also players usually find the most obnoxious kitten and kind of have forced the devs to balance around player made archetypes. At this point I think they should start showing the build ideas they are working on, cause most people don't want to read between the lines on the showcase or don't read patch notes or read anything about the game at all.
Before the rework on the PVP UI there was drop down with a functional , viable not exactly amazing build for every profession, it actually even equipped  weapons and amulets and stuff , it just that it got removed. Pretty sure it was copied from metabattle or something though I think it was updated like only twice till the removal.
So its not exactly something that has never happened.

What would be really cool would be a AI based build suggestion.

League of legends currently does this.

They analyse what kind of buildlayout has the highest winrate, and then suggest people ingame to build these items.      You can even select your... runes... idk what they call it... some kind of pasives before your game.  You click a single button and it does the passivelayout with the highest winrate for you.

Something like this would be nice.

You log onto a Necromancer, and it directly asks you if you want to use the build with the highest winrate, aka. Condireaper.

Spoiler

But knowing Anet... this wont ever happen, and even if it does it will take them half a decade to roll out the first beta.

"sleep better at night: how to win with the least amount of learning and resistance - you too can inflate your ego, roll a warrior today!"

no. the natural flow of trial/error/discovery is important to growth. the more folks experiment and put the pieces together on their own, the better they will become if they stick around. you learn nothing about what makes a build good by copy/pasting just like you wouldn't learn anything asking chatGPT to generate code for you. if someone really cares, they'll stumble across metabattle and can compare what sucks about their build in comparison to the current FOTM nonsense. they've now learned about talents, strong synergies, what's currently pushed, which weapons are good, which abilities are strong and why, why stunbreaks and stab are important...

maybe if a bunch of folks did that and used their kitten brains then pvp would be more than just 10 metaslaves bonking each other with whatever CMC thought he was clever with at the time.
