Like I did a full CM forging steel yesterday and I've been doing full CM DRMs (usually just 2/3 though succeed) and I don't feel like I'm being rewarded for the extra effort, like nothing sticks out in my loot. What is the payoff for these CMs? Am I really getting more loot and it's just not exciting or what?

The Achievement Points?
The extra challenge?
Something a bit different?
You get tripple the defence seals as reward thats about it.
Join high requirement groups and you will see 3/3 succeed.

No more LW episodes, only Expansions and Side Stories, please!
Well the shards from the FS were only like 5. It was really low, like what I remember normal runs. I guess the extra seals make sense, but Given the current seal rewards it's really not much consolation for how annoying they are.
With a group of capable players who know what they're doing, the CM doesn't really require all that much more effort than normal. One would do the exact same DPS rotation and do the same mechanics either way.
The DRM challenge modes are tied to the Meta-Achievement.
So if you want that emote, you gotta do the CMs.
Also, some people just like the challenge.
They are there to extend the grind.
The whole point of a social game is to play with the people you want to play with, not be forced to play with the people you don't.
For players; Achievements and AP mainly.
For ArenaNet: Gives players something to do while they make the expansion set.
