DeanBB.4268
No. There are home instances, which are more like neighborhoods, and only customize to reflect things in game: cats you've collected, nodes you've acquired, story elements. Plus guild halls, which can be customized, but are expensive as they are aimed at guilds of people rather than solo's. 4
Gibson.4036
The home instance in Rata Sun feels the most “personal” and least like a neighborhood to me. It reads more like a workplace than a home, though. The grove would be second most personal, if you imagine a large extended family living there. Hoelbrak and Black Citadel are like vast barracks/workspaces, and Divinity’s reach like a whole neighborhood.

I can imagine a lot of them thinking a bed in the back of the lab is much better than the inefficiency of having to stop work and go to a seperate building to sleep. 😄 I think you're right that all the home instances are more of a communal residential area than a private home, but each tailored to their race, it's only really the humans (and norn in very small settlements) who live in seperate family units. It doesn't fit most people's definitions of MMO player housing, although I've seen some people claim it's good enough because it's got gathering nodes you can earn in-game or buy, merchants, and NPCs who are added based on what you've done. Apparently they don't care about things like being able to customise the furnishings.

ESO have also houses that work as in between that what GW2 have and Guild Halls where you can decorate and to some degree change things. In ESO you could diplay your trophees from different dungeons bosses and so on, in GW2 you can display some raid bosses, so there are things that work more or less the same. As people have already explained in Home Instance you can display (and use) nodes that you gather from which is part of achievements and progression through game. You collection of cats which is a large collection from different parts of this game (some cats you only access from doing story content, other from when you are in certain places and some during Festival events etc) work also as a Trophy collection as you can interact with some of those when you have finished collecting them (play with a ball, purchase an item to enable/disable to show cats). During Wintersday Festival you could also work towards getting Christmas tree (node) as a reward from doing an achievement: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Wintersday_Tree_of_Generosity You can invite other members of a party into your Home Instance to show your collection of nodes (and they can use those) or other collected items. Guild Halls are focused on Guilds and can be decorated (Guild leader - the one creating guild - have to give permission to other members for how they can change things like access to change decoration). Guild Halls also are the only place where you can do your Scribing (craft) as there you have craftstation for Scribes. Guild Halls are meant for large Guild as they cost a bit to get and to upgrade into something that can be used. For a single player a Guild Hall would be a very costly process (as upgrading it cost a lot of materials, Golds and other items to be able to use NPCs that are only found in GH or other items like Portals and so on). GH in that view can not be really seen as a Home in other games as it need a lot of active players to progress into something useful or be fully decorated. mercury ranique.2170
The main issue with the home instance compared to housing in other MMO's is not the amount of customisability, but the lack of removal. If you add the wintersday tree to your home, it is there forever. You can't take it down ever.

You can't take it down, but, you get a daily benefit from it.
