Underwater Mechanist?

I know this was brought up before, but I just wanted to point something out about the underwater mechanist. I was in a fractal group today, playing as my alacrity mechanist, and did the first two fractals no problem, but when I got to aquatic, I was like uh... all of my alacrity just went to nothing because there's no mech with me to use my skills with. I knew before going into the fractal so obviously I was like I'm playing something else. Anet, is it your intention to leave it this way with one mech support : depth charges skill? Any reason why mech cannot just live underwater with you and use its skills normally?

Just pretend you are a Renegade. Their elite specialisation cannot be used underwater at all... (and yes I play Engineer and Revenant so I understand the issues)

To be honest it doesn't sound like you do.

Unless I'm mistaken Renegade can still use their traits underwater, Mechanist cannot.

The Renegade and Mechanist can still both select their Specialisation traits under water.

What I was trying to explain, and I'll have that perhaps I didn't do it well, is that Renegade cannot load Kalla (the Legendary Renegade stance) or use any of the Renegade specific utility skills under water. They have to use another Legendary and hence a different set of Utilities that often don't work as well with the Renegade Specialisation.

Mechanist can at least use Rectifier signet, Barrier Signet, Force Signet and Superconducting Signet underwater. The only Mechanist specific Utilies they cannot use are Shift Signet and the Elite Jade Buster Cannon.

Granted the Mech is lost. Quite why I haven't got a clue, at least with Rangers and Necromancers they still keep theirs. I certainly don't like it, like anyone else.

Perhaps as is often quoted in these Forums, it is a tradeoff?

The distinction is that the majority of mechanist traits are lost underwater. Renegade loses the shortbow trait and the protection on summon trait, but everything else still works underwater, you just have to switch Kalla for Shiro or Jalis. As long as you weren't also the healer, renegade works fine underwater. Mechanist, though, is just terrible. Given how powerful the mech is, your strength is basically cut in half as soon as you get deeper than wading depth.

The difference between mechanist and renegade though is that while renegade loses options underwater, mechanist loses skills underwater that cannot be recompensated. On the renegade traits, you can make a build where 0/9 of them are invalidated by going underwater. However, on any given mechanist build, at least 3/9 of them will be completely invalidated by going underwater (as those traits do literally nothing without a mech) and the remaining 6/9 of them are at least partially invalidated by going underwater. Renegade still has access to all 3 of their Kalla's command skills underwater (and thus can maintain permanent alacrity), mechanist loses access to almost all sources of alacrity as well as might (as you don't get any toolbelt skills, because why would you get them back after losing the mech if they were a tradeoff for that).

It's really not a fair comparison to say the two make equal sacrifices going underwater, because they don't. Renegade loses options, Mechanist just has a smaller number of skills and trait slots.

Majority of the jade mech skills are lost underwater and acquiring the mechanist elite disables your toolbar.

They basically replaced our toolbar in the underwater with a crappy version of the renegades bombardment skill. You can run that one signet skill and also get random green air shots but core engie is stronger in the water... overwhelming so.

Alternatively you holosmith, you keep all your traits, and you keep your tool bar.

I think anet just didn't get around to it. I am sure they will fix it in a year when they get around to it in that busy schedule of fixing long cats and giving people free turtles.

Yeah, my assumption is that there were bugs with the mech underwater that they couldn’t fix in time, so they slapped on what we got.  They of course won’t admit they ran out of time and pushed forward an unfinished product, so that’s why we haven’t seen any kind of responses on the topic.  I don’t blame them, screwed if you do, screwed if you don’t situation.  I do hope they plan to update it eventually, but for now I’d rather they work on untamed honestly.
