I don't really understand how to get the items for transmog. Can someone explain the easiest way to get them?

Recommended Posts

New player want to look cool. I picked male Norn for my Warrior because I saw the cultural heavy armor and though it looked amazing so want to change into that asap. Can't really make sense of where to get the transmutation charges or whatever they are called. I looked on the wiki and didn't really understand what it was talking about. Only place I saw them was for league rewards for pvp.

They can be pretty difficult to acquire in PvE.  Map completion rewards are one way.  Some people will make a throwaway character just to map complete the major cities as each one grants a transmutation charge.  WvW is another good source.  You can gather up quite a few from the participation rewards if you spend time there on a regular basis.  Alternatively, gold-to-gems is expensive, but transmutation charges are available in the gem shop.

Edit:  It's also worth noting as a long-term goal that legendary armor doesn't require transmutation charges at all.

They're also available pretty cheaply from the Wizard's Vault, using the Astral Acclaim currency you get from completing dailies.

It's in the top-left corner of the screen, next-to-last icon on the right (between the crossed swords and the lion's head). Click the "Astral Rewards" on the left sidebar then scroll down a bit.

Question has been answered, but I would like to add: You need to acquire the actual skins first before you can transmute your current armor set into a different look.

What do you mean by skins? I know I need to buy the armor I want to transmog into is that what you mean?

Each piece of wearable equipment has a skin. You unlock it via the right-click context menu. Not every item you acquire has its skin automatically unlocked in your Account Wardrobe. You need to unlock a skin first for it to become available to you via Transmutation Charge.

Edit (re: emojis): What's the confusion about? My answer is clear and 100% accurate. Daft much?

I don't really know much about legendaries. What do you mean? Like you can freely change their looks into whatever you want? I heard they can be used on every character somehow and have max stats and such but are super hard to get. Don't really know anything else about them though.

Correct.  In addition to being able to freely change stats, swap out runes/sigils without destroying them, and use the item on as many characters as you like simultaneously, you can also transmute the appearance of legendary items without requiring transmute charges.  However, they are a long-term goal because they're very expensive and tend to require time-gated materials.

While leveling to 80, you blow through armor pieces so fast that it is not worth transmuting them. If you don't like the random bits you find along the way, then get an outfit to cover your armor.

Outfits are onesies, mostly in the gem shop. Typically, turning off the hat is the only customization, plus applying dyes.

There is also a common clothing outfit for cheap on the trading post. Wiki that, there are a couple steps involved to get it to work.

If you are NA (server doesn't matter), I will be online in a while and could help.

Don't worry about legendaries at this stage. It is information not required on your first foray into the game. As the person said, it's a long term goal (like months/years).

Skins are the actual appearance of an item. Once you unlock that look (usually by equpping or right clicking an item tand selecting unlock a skin), it is automatically stored in your wardrobe and then can be used to overwrite the exisitng look of any armour or skin you own. To do this, you need transmutation charges. It's an outdated concept which allowedf them to monetise changing your look because one method is buy them direct from the store.

How can you get them?

https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Transmutation_Charge#:~:text=Transmutation Charges is a currency, the Wardrobe and the wallet.

To summarise, that includes

- The online store

- pvp tokens

- dungeon/fractal tokens

- birthday gifts

- WvW tokens

- Completing maps 100% (cities always give them if memory serves correctly)

- Laurel vendors

- Wizards Vault

And other places. Some of these will mean nothing to you, but take your time and learn as you along. The game will teach all about this as you level naturally

OK, looked it up in-game.

Trading Post: search "common" and buy

Endless Common Clothing Tonic for 9+ silver

Don't use it or anything.

Talk to Black Lion Trader (Armorsmith), who will convert it to an outfit. I know in Divinity Reach that Trader is in the same "hut" as the Trading Post dudes.

Holler if you need help (message DeanBB.4268)

This should answer most of your questions.

Yeah I read that like I said in my post. The part I did not understand is the locations where you get the charges. Everything seems very similar to how it works in FF14. Just seems much more difficult to get the charges in this game than in that game.

Sadly I switched to the EU servers to play with my friend but thanks for the offer.

I had like a 5 year old level 4 character from when I very briefly tried the game before so I opened a bunch of birthday gifts I don't recall getting any charges but I also did not really look at the items just stuffed them in the bank ASAP so I could make a new character. Will check it out. Yeah mostly the issue was I did not understand what any of the ways to get them actually entail and such as I just started the game so was asking basically how people usually go about getting them and which ways are easy to farm them.

So those you get largely from achievements, festivals, map completions, and yes PvP or WvW reward tracks.  There isn't a vendor where you buy them at other than during a festival, for example currently in Divinity's Reach with Wintersday festival, but it's a terrible trade.  Your best way to obtain them is simply by playing the game.  They just kind of accumulate.

Here is a forum post about farming them, maybe some ideas will help too.

The NPC you need is actually the "Black Lion Exchange Specialist." Usually just a couple steps away from all the others, the icon over the NPC's head is a bag with black arrows on it. Otherwise, all the rest is correct. In Divinity's Reach, it's directly across from Ministers Waypoint.

I may have got the birthday gift acquisitiuon wrong. Apologies - misremembered info on my part.

You will start with a low amount, but over time it builds - esp through pvp and map completions. I have more than I can ever use at this stage. It's a pointless system that hopefully will get removed in one of their upcoming reworks. I cannot possibly imagine it is a siginificant source of income at this point in the game and it's just an unnecesasary layer.

Since you'll likely be swapping gear frequently early on, you probably want to save your transmutation charges for once your build is more settled anyway.  A good workaround is to find an outfit you like.  Most outfits must be purchased from the gemshop, but they are essentially a skin that conceals your armor with a different look.  The down side is you can't change out individual pieces like you can with armor skins, but the plus side is outfits don't cost any transmutation charges to use.

Thats because transmog used to be considered a major source of income for the gem shop.  When they switched to wardrobe, the whole system was scrapped, all associated items were converted into "charges" as the primary resource.   Some older gem shop skins still have the code path where the item IS the skin, and "using" the skin applies the skin without consuming charges (its basically is the charge) and unlocks the skin in the wardrobe.  You can do this out of order to unlock the skin, and if the skin item isn't consumed, it acts as a free transmutation charge for that one specific skin.  If it does get consumed, it usually adds one charge to your wallet.
