Taunt and spank

There is a situation that taunts is rare condition, and just never happens, which is a waste of code. Why to implement taunt as option, but then never use it in skills or anything? Such a shame.

Taunt could be good, that if you have gear, class or perks which gives tones of toughness and vitality you could actually use them for something, o just keep enemies close to you so your hit 5 enemies skills can trigger. Right now there is too much focus on max kitten dps and kitten support.

The way to make taunt good is to pair it with protection and resolution, so you get more attencion but it bothers you less.

There could also be a ways to taunt off build with relicts and sigils. Like

Relic of Challenger: When you use elite skill Taunt nearby enemies and gain protection and resolution. Buff duracion depends on elite skill cld.

Relic of Protector When you use healing skill taunt nearby enemies and gain barrier. Barier size depends on heal cld.

Sigil of Duelist, when you switch to that weapon taunt nearby enemies and gain protection and resolution,

There is also an option to pair taunt with "damage taken converted to healing instead" or "damage taken reversed to enemy" or "Taunt while you are invicible". That could be even more interesting.

Taunt is nothing more than crowd control in gw2.  Anet made a design decision to not follow other MMO's in having the role triumvirate (tank, healer, dps) and adjusted how players get attacked by enemy npc's accordingly. As a consequence, GW2 does not have tank-specific fight mechanics either that other MMO's have.  For example, the secondary tank taunting off the raid boss from the main tank to allow the stacking debuff on the main tank to fall off before the guy dies and the raid wipes.  If this kind of mechanic is ever added in GW2 you can be sure anet will give us a dedicated special action key for it.

While you're right that taunt is mostly a waste of code, what you propose would be a waste of time. We already have a pull mechanic for grouping enemies together and nobody needs another player to pull trash mobs off of them.  In fact, in most cases that would be more annoying than it is helpful.  Regardless, taunt runs counter to the design of this game.  It doesn't belong and that's why it isn't used.  It probably shouldn't have been added in the first place and they obviously decided to limit its use early on.

Spellbreaker has a decent taunt skill.

Except it's cool down is crazy high for some reason in PvE.

There is Imminent Threat in Spellbreaker, however indeed it has very long cooldown, and the effect package is limited, so it is hard to use.

When it comes to synergies. Its actually realy good.

With the right build, you get quickness, fury, 6 might and stab. Also the resolution is good with Hardened Armor.

But 35s CD in PvE is way to much, when you also get the Boons via Bull Charge that has 24s CD.

It basically exists to blow up cc bars in pve. That is about it. Yes it is dumb. No..... none understand why a taunt skill was added to game with no "tank". Makes zero sense.

Ranger back in the day used to have an extremely reliable way to taunt with "protect me" , however they did a minor rework to make it give barrier.

It was devastatingly synergistic to setup great-sword combo back in the day. Now Ranger's only form of taunt is through a trait. This is in Player vs player enviroments, as for PVE ur statement is pretty accurate.

It makes sense for a Mesmer since the intention is to distract the taunted enemy away from the player with a phantasm, and distraction is definitely the Mesmer's thing.

The other applications are in the "do I have your full attention?" category, which more or less makes sense where they are. In some cases it might actually be "hold my beer and watch this!" but still. 😆

None of the applications actually measure up to the intentions though, so it's just meh.
