What is the point of a squad place on WvW?

Players have a need to feel like they belong to something & are valued.

Aside from the boon share & squad chat reasons.

Players want to be in the squad because they want to participate & belong to something where they're valued.

WvW lost this endearing aspect when they made World Linking a permanent feature.

It’s almost equivalent to people going to the same tavern, bar, or pub.

Ok…Pandora’s Gennie in a Box has been opened.

ANet still doesn't understand what really motivates players to play their WvW game mode.

ANet tore down & is in the process of gutting our WvW version of the "Cheers Bar"
to replace it with Server & Alliance Linking.

ANet expects & is betting the "Farm" that Guilds will be able to take over the responsibility in providing a Long-Term & Stable ecosystem that Servers previously provided for years.

All the poor decisions are beginning to take its toll on the Long-Term population levels of WvW...saw this coming a long time ago.

perfectly put... and i also saw this coming..... linkings was the last thing wvw needded... yet str8 after it happnd all the idiots thought.. "wow this is great,, lots of ppl in wvw now" but now no communities can be built.. no server pride.... nothin.... just a pointless game mode with nothing to show.. 8 weeks of tryna mix with diffrent ppl knowing theres little meaning to it because at the end we start again....however.... there are plenty other things anet got wrong even before linkings...and after.... literally evrything they introduced starting with desert bl.....

i still enjoy wvw, but it could..and should have been so much more than it is.... im just glad i got to play it for those 1st 3 yrs.. before it went downhill .... and ye..it maybe took awhile to get to the bottom of the hill.... but here we are.

Personally the concept of a larger harder to travel map for WvW could be fun, but not as a borderlands map which is copied 3×times with small population as is.

Something like that for EBG would be better concept. Borderlands should be two factions map instead of how it currently is. Just two boarderland maps is good enough. But that's for another thread I guess

Being in squad or in a party gives you the following opportunities:

  • Boon + buff priority
  • Squad/sub-group chat
  • Lieutenant capabilities + shared participation
  • Able to recognize squad markers for better focus target
  • Due to boons + buffs you're probably doing slightly more concentrated dmg i.e; securing tagged kills
  • Total supplies carried
  • Sub-squad player health easily identifiable

And probably a few more...

Being inside a squad is better than being outside a squad - vice-versa for parties but it mostly boils down to boon + heal priority. This doesn't mean you cannot perform outside of a squad, it only means you must play more carefully in terms of positioning, situational awareness etc. It certainly helps if you're playing a support build but if you're dps then you may need to wait until your zerg has baited the enemy bomb or begins pushing through before fully committing. If anything I can recommend being outside of squad is to have your own stability + stun break and/or leap/teleport of some kind if you get pulled, always stick close to tag.

Hope that helps answer your question.

Being in the squad doesn't increase loot at all. There is no party/squad kill sharing. You would get the same amount of loot as if you were not in squad with the same people around attacking the same things.

It does increase loot, group kill participation was added quite some time ago. You have to reach a certain dmg threshhold to get the loots, healing ppl who deal dmg and then just slightly hitting the enemy will give you kill participation when your healed groupmembers are killing the enemy.

Being in a squad doesn't affect how much damage or healing you have done though.

But do you get the benefit of those that you healed and dealt dmg when you are not in a group/squad?

Commanders will break their members down by 5 man squads. The idea is if your in that squad, whatever bonuses, or heals you use, or special ability...will fall directly on your squadmates, within that 5 man group FIRST. It's the reason why some commanders will have so many Guardians, and scourges spread out evenly between all the squads, in order to best utilize their defensive/offensive skills. Some commanders will only fill up their "Zerg" with specific Classes/Professions over that of others. And in fact many commanders will not accept certain classes, professions, or even individual Guilds or Players. Lot of times they'll tell you it's tactical or strategic in their reasoning of why they do not wish you in the group. You could be a Ranger. Or a Thief. Or an engineer. And they might not want you just because they believe that particular class brings nothing heavy in AoE DPS. Or maybe you have no healing ability to help keep a squad alive. However, they may need a type of Specialization. Maybe they don't want your Engineer, but they want your Scrapper. IN some instances you may have to change your Class or Build to be ...accepted into the group. To be accepted by the Commander. After the launch of the Legendary Backpiece of WvW, I had to learn how greatly Rangers were not needed or wanted within the squad. Druids for a short time, but between an Ele healer and a druid...the commander usually chose the Ele, because it pumped out a greater amount of healing power over a Druid they said.

You can always swallow your pride and switch to another class in order to get inside your commanders group. That's if...he wants you in the group even if you do so. Some of the commanders today just want to run around with their Guilds Only, and do not wish to have a pug within their squad. They might believe you to be a weak link in their chain, and of course no commander wants a weak link in their squad. SO you could be like many of us. Not part of the squad, running besides your allies into combat, or roaming and doing your own thing without worry of what others think or even care about.

Swallow your pride. Put up with a lot of garbage. Or do your own thing. One of these options will always work for you.
