Am I wrong or GW2 will get Unreal Engine 4?

Yesterday I was browsing the careers page at ArenaNet and I saw this:LEAD UNREAL ENGINEERandSENIOR GAMEPLAY ENGINEER

With one of his jobs to "Design and implement scalable, performant and secure systems" and one of the requirements, "Robust experience with Unreal Engine 4".

So, will we finally get a graphic engine upgrade? Or maybe ArenaNet is working on a mysterious new title that will use Unreal Engine?

I am so happy if this is the case :)

maybe it's more of the latter they were working on multiple titles before the mass layoffs

graphically, UE4 would make GW2 look prettier by a mile but it's not a good engine for MMORPGs so i doubt it's going to be for GW2. -- don't get me wrong, i'd love for gw2 to improve engine/performance/graphics wise but i think for an MMORPG of GW2's scale (environments, playercounts, calculations) i think a new custom engine would be better than UE4

If they have been working on this side project for years why do they need these positions now? Doesn't the game engine development begin in the core of everything and won't they need these specialists from the beginning of the project and not after years of development?

Sorry, did I miss something? Do you have any source about this project on consele. I mean Any source?

By the way, many MMOs are using Unreal Engine, just browsed like 20 of which many are very popular like Blade & Soul, Tera, Ark etc.

The good with GW2 is that it has instanced maps where 120-150 players are at the same time (max) if more people want to get into that map they are just redirected to a different instance. That is why performance-wise, with some adjustments, the unreal engine can work (by work I mean make GW2 with a lot better performance and a lot prettier) for GW2.

More accurately, it's been in development for at least 1.5 years, as the lead designer was hired in January 2019. You can only guess why they're hiring, or even if it's related. They could simply be hiring replacements.

The job listings originally included the keywords 3rd person fantasy action online role playing console title. You can only guess which game(s) this applied to.

My guess is side project, I don't think converting the whole game to a new engine is even possible at this point, not without serious delays on any new content in development (IBS Episodes and Expansion 3) not to mention the amount of work and time it would require to actually get done..I'm no developer but I'd expect such a thing to take several months at least maybe more.. I expect they'd basically have to remaster a lot of the game in order to port the game to unreal.

People come and go all the time. Maybe they're hiring to replace someone who left the company or hiring more people as they scale up the project?

almost all MMORPGs that use Unreal Engine do not have the same potential amount of players as GW2 in a single instance (300~ for WvW at it's peak). Blade & Soul and TERA perform poorly in large scale battles (faction wars, gvg), if you put GW2's WvW in that on UE3 or UE4, your performance is going to tank so bad. even BDO with it's custom engine and Archeage using CryEngine suffers on large scale fights (and atleast for BDO, it's custom made for MMORPG use)... and then there's Bless Online (we all know how that turned out... and UE3 build it used just had really bad performance in any game mode) ... even with optimisations, you can only do so much to an engine before you need to start cutting corners (models/environment/effects/massive culling/etc.) in different areas just to get an acceptable level of performance...

we're better off just getting dx11 + dx12 and some multi-threading optimisations like what WoW did -- these are much more feasible and by keeping a legacy dx9 mode would ensure that existing players with older hardware can remain playing even with dx11/dx12, since we're adding(improving) unto the existing engine instead of replacing it. imagine if we went UE4 and people with potato laptops suddenly couldn't play at an acceptable level because their computers just can't handle it... the complaints we'd get here in the forums/reddit.... and we already have enough people opposed to getting a dx11 upgrade

but yeah speaking of Unreal Engine, you may want to check out this fan creation for GW1:

(it's really nice looking -- like what i said in my first post, UE4 can make for really pretty things... but it's not going to work well for GW2) -- maybe for GW1, a remaster in UE4 would work.

yes you are wrong. After the massive lay offs, there have been more job offerings that point in the direction that Arenanet is working on another title (not GW3 and not likely an MMO).

The genre mmorpg has had a shrink in potential audiance. for a part it is followed up by MOBA's, but also by the shift to mobile games with social interaction. So Arenanet is looking at new markets to focus on (besides GW2).

So it is very unlikely that GW2 will get a new enigne.
