Hi,

I think i want to try an engineer (holo) for open world and instanced content play.

Can't decide on race (and armor combo) though.

Any suggestions on what race/gender/armor should I use. I kinda feel like all cool medium armor is sneakthief focused. And thats not very engi to me 😄 But maybe i am wrong.

Thanks!

You can always go with what you like regardless if suits the theme of a particular spec or not, I usually end up mixing different stuff together to partially stick to a theme, because for some aesthetics it's quite difficult to find matching pieces all under the same theme. For example if you want to keep the Engineer theme try to focus on things like gloves/headgear/boots and let the rest be something that matches with them in style, but not necessarily in theme.

Here's an example: https://i.imgur.com/GdGb55i.jpg

Charr engineer Is thematically king in Gw2, imo. BUT ... charr have It rough when It comes to armor texture stretching, and medium armor Is the worst offender of all, in that regard. However... There are few good Pieces in the game (gemstore/achievements/OW), that can acomplish either a cool charr theme or a stylish cat engineer.

Or, you can Just select Easy fashion Wars, with a human.

Since you mention this specifically in your post, a thing to keep in mind here is that armors are shared between certain rigs. As such, the following armor/gender combinations will all be identical:

  • Charr male, Charr female
  • Asura male, Asura female
  • Human female, Norn female, Sylvari female
  • Human male, Norn male, Sylvari male

So if you for example don't like the armors available to human male, you won't like em on norn males or sylvari males either since they'd look exactly the same, bar race customization

We've gotten a fair bit better Charr armor over the years.

I mean, there's pants.

The best race lorewise for engi is asura because of the racial skills and the elite golem is without a doubt the best. Imagine before the the 6th rune nerf, having a golem summoned, asecond golem due the elite skill, and the jade mech.. an army of golems, crazy

Except engineers lorewise are Charr (even holo and mech are). Don’t mix lore into your dream of golem grandeur.

This is really funny with your icon because Gorrik actually uses some Holosmith skills in game.

Asura would make a perfect photon forge, not a photon forge designed to explode the user, it was definetly a Charr that originally came up with that idea. But also here are the wiki pictures for all the engineers, even Anet acknowledge their superiority:

I'm fully aware what the spec concept art looks like, I just found it amusing.

Well the only Holosmiths we've seen outside of concept art are a human, a dredge and an Asura unless I'm missing someone. There is Renyak who is a charr scrapper you fight in a meta though.

Then I guess it's even more amusing that the holo elite icon is the face of a Charr lol.

Another plus, asura cultural armor is tech related, while cultural charr armor...      archaic style full of bones and horns

I've been a Charr engineer with the Rubicon coat since before expansions were a thing, but recently I've been incorporating bits from the elite specs into it, like the Super Adventure Box weapons like a tweaked holosmith focusing on more stable constructs that aren't self-destructing from overheating, control gloves that look like a set of rings around the forearm, I forget the name exactly, along with the scrapper helmet.

Basically the idea is the charr just goes around, picking up whatever tech he can get his claws on, matching aesthetics be damned as long as it's effective.
