Permanent Golem summons and other ways to augment racial skills?

Recommended Posts

I have been RPing a Golemancer for a while, an Elementalist from Dynamics and VAL-A Golem inventions alongside any missions where I can pilot a Golem and making sometimes use of the racial Asura golem summons. But been thinking, it would be cool if we could have these permanently like Necro summons or at least extend how long can they be used, I think it would be really good to roleplay a golemancer. This of course would mean we would need to find a balance to make other Racial Skills equally usable, maybe make Norn transformations longer or permanent until abandoned (The replacing of the natural skills should balance skills enough there) And maybe Charrzokas can be permanent or have Ammo instead?

What would be better balanced, but probably harder to code, would be for Jade Mechs to look like golums for Asura.

I am actually pro giving Jade Mechs a couple different skins, and I say this as some one that hasn't really bothered using my mechanist much at all and am usually in the "would rather Anet..." camp, I just am really tired of seeing that same model mobbing seemingly every group encounter I take part in...I just really want there to be some variety if Mechs are something that's going to be a thing from now on.  I'll get over it, just this once at least, if my own preferred classes don't get some kind of special cosmetic thing of their own. Just so long as they thin out the ranks clones of this frankly rather fugly Jade Mech model.

As most of the "No" responses didn't include any input as to why I genuinely don't know if there's a counter-argument.  So I'll say "This sounds good if feasible".

The Mistfire Wolf is another really cool skill that it would also be nice to have permanently out.  Just balance these to be still inferior to other elites, and maybe overcorrect to avoid breaking the servers because a ton of people have pets running around.

Why not just sell a bunch of permanent "pets" in the gem store, then?

I assume you mean for combat, as minis and pet whistles exist already.

Selling them in the gem store would make balancing an actual problem, because people could be justifiably annoyed if they buy a pet and it is really underpowered (especially if this comes as a later nerf).  Just making the existing skills permanent doesn't have that problem because they can be as underpowered as the devs want.

Yes an actual pet not a mini.

This suggestion seems to me that people want permanent "pets" like the ranger, necro and now mechanist.  So, why only elevate temporary skills to permanent for just a few professions?  Why can't every profession have a permanent "pet"?  That's what the cry will be should this suggestion be implemented.

Every profession would have a permanent pet, because all races have a skill that can summon one (and I'd also throw in Mistfire Wolf because I never see it).  Just make it so that at least one pet from every racial skill set can be summoned permanently, then tune down the skill itself if it's likely to cause balance problems.

Making racial skills better than the proffesion skills would make optimal builds include race skills, which would mean that many people wouldn't pick the race they like, but the race with the best skills. That this will not happen was shown when the devs changed the HT temple when people realized that a sylvari racial could be used to skip some mechanic.

On the front of pet skins: giving them would make it harder to balance pet specialisations, because of the "i bought a skin, now i can't use it because it got nerfed" argument or making pets stronger because they would be more proffitable. It would also show favour towards pet specialisations as they would have more costumisation options than non-pet specialisations.

Because any "permanent pet" is nothing more than just a passive increase to dps. It's the equivalent of buffing power stat of the class using it. I think we should reward passive play less, while rewarding more active skill usage instead. Want a permanent pet? Play ranger or mechanist.

And seeing as mistfire wolf is a paid skill, it's pretty much buying passive power. So that's why "no".

No it isn't the equivalent of buffing the power stat, because of the opportunity cost.  You no longer have whatever bonus was being given by the utility/elite that was replaced by it, which should by design be stronger.

On the Mistfire Wolf specifically, you could make the exact same argument that it's buying a passive power boost already - making it permanent doesn't change that.  However no one makes that argument because it obviously isn't providing an advantage as an intentionally weaker skill.  You aren't rewarded for taking the passive option, you're punished for it - but if some people want to make that trade off because they'd enjoy the roleplay of it, then why not give them that option?

If you're interested in the input, use the forum's search function and look up the 18237446 threads we had about this in the past.

At some point, you get tired of having the same arguments over and over and over again and as none of these threads bring anything new to the discusion, I don't feel that I should either. So it boils down to "No.". Kharmin usually does  the "use the search function"-thing, I assume for the same reasons.

Perhaps this approach would be more effective if rather than either saying "No", which conveys very little, or "Go use the search function", which really underplays how bad the forum's search function is, just add a link to a related topic (if it's genuinely so easy to find one)?

Obviously you're free not to do that, but as far as I can see the approach you outline achieves little more than make the forum feel unnecessarily hostile.
