Should I level boost? (New player)

Recommended Posts

So I been leveling up thief I really like it. I got to level 45 thinking of level boosting him so I could hangout with my other friends cause they all just level boosted. Well I get the hero points I spent back or are they gone if I level boost?

I'll say no, you'll most likely end up lost and confused like the rest of the players who boosted. As for hero points spent, you'll gain the ones you get from leveling ontop of the onea you've spent. You can't unlock your especs unless you max out all your core specs.

Don't use the level 80 booster. The gear and weapons you get are awful. It's better to play the game rather than skipping it and learn how to play your profession. It doesn't matter what your friends say, just delete the level 80 booster from your shared inventory slot and continue leveling your thief at your own pace.

You're welcome. The only time I would ever recommend you using the level 80 booster is if you need a level 80 character to unlock the glider in HoT or the mounts in PoF.

By the way, there is no way to get spent hero points back, but getting to level 80 will get you enough to unlock all your skills and core specialisations, and the Hero Challenges in open-world maps will give you more - if you did them all you'd have more than enough to unlock both elite specialisations (as well as all the core stuff). So there's no need to get them back - even if you make a 'bad' choice while levelling it won't matter for long, you'll be able to unlock other options soon and eventually all of them.

I would generally advise against boosting to level 80 unless you already know the ins and outs of your characters profession. You risk skipping the [learning to play your profession] part which is essential to have an enjoyable playing experience later on.

I would only use them on second chars of the same prof or any other case where learning the gameplay is not relevant. (mule chars, AP unlocks etc.)

Level 80 boosting is really not a thing you want to do, for all the reasons that have already been stated. As a person who made that Mistake, I can tell you that is a ginormous pain to boost without knowing how to play that profession at all. My boosted characters are mostly places for me to store excess items these days.

One thing that I didn't realize until I was going for 100% map completion: low-level zones are great! They're full of events and stories and cool things to find, and you're going to need all of the low-level gathering stuff for professions anyway. If you're brand new to GW2 I recommend you definitely don't boost. Leveling up teaches you about the world, the mechanics and it gives you everything you need to enjoy the game. And the personal story is pretty good too.I'd recommend doing the personal story and the dungeons in order and at-level. And focus on one character until you get all the way to 80.

In my opinion, don't do it.The first time I realized that the boost might come in handy was while leveling a profession I had leveled before. In other words, if you have yet to fully understand the profession you would like to boost, don't do it.If you already have a firm grasp on the profession's ins and outs and only want to level another of the same profession to 80 to make him/her into an elite spec, go ahead.

I'm going to go against the advice and say that level 45 -50 is high enough that you've learned a fair amount about the character. In fact, you may have found a build you like, and, unless you make an effort to experiment, might spend the next 30 levels hitting the same three skills over and over. Using the boost gets it out over your shared slot, gives you some dyes and food boosts. If you have PoF, it takes about 30 minutes to unlock mounts. If you have HoT, takes a bit longer to unlock gliding.

You can stay in Core Tyria, farm hero points and waypoints, finish your personal story, and you have the whole gamut of skills to experiment with.

OTOH, thief is fairly easy to level so you might want to use it on your second toon, especially if it's annoying to level. Get a toon to about 50 before using it though.

Edit: The boost also gives 4 15 slot bags, not bad for a beginning player.

Yeah don't delete the boost. If nothing else you get a bunch of stuff just from levelling to 80 and I believe from the boost itself. Even if that gear is not great I believe it can still be salvaged for nice resources. So if anything use the boost, remove the stuff from the character and then delete the character. Personally I used my boosts when I bought the expansions on some 'bank' characters. As Keltan pointed out 4 15 slot bags is pretty nice.

If you don't mind spoilers and have bought PoF, I would seriously recommend creating a second character, using your booster on it, playing the 1st hour of PoF for the mount, and then going back to your main since it unlocks for the account. This will seriously make your leveling up a lot more enjoyable. If you not a big fan of jumping puzzles or wasting time trying to get vistas, then maybe go as far the getting the spriggan to skip them. I mean, when I first got world completion with my elementalist, I remember running with everything I could to go faster (dagger/dagger, utility for perma swiftness and teleport, and fire sword ultimate)... Having a mount then would mean doing this a lot less painful and without having do make a "world completion" build. But be warned there are spoilers... So maybe turn off the sound and dont read the chat.

Save it for an alt. Everyone I know who uses it winds up regretting it and they miss content, and also you hit lvl 80 without having gathered the resources/wealth you would have if you'd levelled normally, so suddenly you have to either buy gold or just grind - neither of which is fun.

Instead, save the boost until you have an alt you already know you want at lvl 80 and can equip properly etc.

I agree with the others who suggested boosting a character right away. The boost allows you to test out each class at level 80 to get an idea of what it's like. Once you find a class you think you'd like to play, accept the boost. Next, begin the Path of Fire storyline. Very early on in the storyline you will unlock the Raptor. Since mounts are part of the mastery system and the mastery system is account-wide, this unlocks the Raptor for all of your characters regardless of level! You may also wish to unlock basic gliding by completing the first part of the HoT storyline. The ability to jump off of cliffs and glide can save a lot of time in places, as can the raptor's speed and leaps.

After doing this, you should have a pretty good idea of whether or not you're comfortable with the difficulty of expansion content. If yes, then I'd advise you to just keep going with it and have fun! If no (and for most new players this is very likely!), then go back to leveling up and learning the basics in core Tyria. The raptor and glider will make it quicker and more enjoyable!

Although I do not recommend using the boost on your first character below 80, once you have leveled at least one character from 1 to 80, feel free to use the booster on an alternate. It will give you some basic WvW exotic equipment and free a shared inventory slot, which is great for a copper-fed salvage-o-magic or any stack of salvage tools like the mystic salvage kit.

Do not worry about what to do with the new character. You can keep it as a mule for excess inventory, park it somewhere with access to your home instance, crafting, bank, or Black Lion Trading post, park it by a world event you want to farm or at the end of a jumping puzzle, etc.

Do not feel pressured to play like a veteran in end-game content with a boosted character, either. There is a lot of easier content for you to master your chosen profession while enjoying exploration. Each species has a different starting area in Tyria as well as a selection of personal stories.
