I'm in need of some help

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm kinda new player, as in I have never reach any expansion story or done any dungeons/raids.

I really like to play range classes and I don't know what class to level and help others in dungeons / open world.

I have played the classic ranger and the mesmer, but I dont want to invest the limited time I do have into a class that when I reach lvl 80 becomes a burden to others in groups.

What do you guys recommend to level ? Thanks and sorry if i made a new post for nothing.

Ranger is in a pretty good spot right now!

your Damage per second is something always welcome in dungeons and open world.

I advise you to play the Soulbeast specialisation.

One complication is that most of the recommended builds for rangers aren't ranged. Some use a mix of ranged and melee weapons but you'll spend most of your time in melee range. But that might apply to other professions too. GW2 doesn't have dedicated ranged or melee professions, they can all do both and it's often more practical to switch between the two than stick to just one.

But as long as you bear that in mind ranger is a good choice, it's pretty versatile so you'll probably be able to find a build you like which is useful for groups.

Im ok with a mix of range and melee.  As long as I can help in the group and also play range, even part-time.

Ranger:

The longbow is one of the highest power DPS, usually combined with greatsword. Power Soulbeast has an extremely high burst in high-end PvE and players don't mind you using range in open-world as long as you don't use the #4 skill to knockback enemies constantly that your melee allies are attacking.

Druid is a healer who uses staff from range to heal allies, its axe/warhorn are also ranged, and almost all of its Celestial Avatar skills are ranged. Only some of the glyph skills are melee.

Engineer:

Scrapper with Mortar Kit and Machinist with Rifle are both viable options with a high DPS output. Both also double as effective supports when neccessary, bringing key boons like Alacrity and Quickness.

Mesmer:

Staff Mirage is a low-intensity build very welcome in high-end PvE.

Necromancer:

Scourge is usually a condition-based DPS, but also a great support. It plays from range using scepter, and has the ability to revive allies from range by pulling them to its position. Its a hard carry for many groups but sadly doesn't offer much other utility.

Harbinger is a ranged (pistol), build that gives a key boon Quickness as well as doing high damage in both power and condition builds, but its very glassy.

Thief:

Deadeye does good DPS with ranged weapons (rifle or pistol/pistol), and Spectre is capable of supporting allies from range and doing high condition damage as well.

Some classes will need you to switch between your melee and ranged weapons depending on the situation, or just to get higher damage, while others are more efficient at just camping a single weapon as they lack efficient alternatives to weaponswap to except in emergencies.

Make builds in the PvP lobby (the best you can, since some stuff is missing there), since its free to change your equipment and stats there. Make sure you always have traits, runes, sigils and food that synergise, try to use a build kind of close to the current metabuilds if you can, and install ArcDPS so you know what kind of damage you're doing, but don't obsess about it too much or you'll burn out.

If you have the End of Dragons expansion, the virtuoso elite for the mesmer is distance. At the moment, "condi" (the player term for condition) is better placed than power for virtuoso. Send those daggers flying from a distance!

Ranged play is possible in solo play (Open world PvE) and in some situations in WvW. If you ever plan to do group content you need to be stacked on your group so that you both receive heals but all group buffs. If you play away from others your damage will tank and you may get kicked for causing the boss to move around the area or for generally causing issues in completion of that content.

With that being said I recommend pushing yourself to get the elite spec Mechanist for engineer. They are completely busted right now, are meta in every environment, and they have a power DPS build that would be perfectly suited to both you being a new player AND its damage is very capable at range.

This is the build (can also be found on snowcrows and metabattle):

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?PeQAQlxy0YusXWMOuLvxPA-zVIYRUwXGtlAVUA6fQCjNwrhCzAAA-w

It's easy to gear (core stats with free runes) and it's quite difficult to lag behind in DPS.. I believe there was a video of some guy who started his DPS rotation by pressing 1, then tabbed out of the game and came back after to a benchmark of 28k DPS.

Lastly, I'm a ranger main player (since launch) and while many have suggested going that for range.. ranger doesn't actually use it a whole bunch. Even in PvP environments, you need to float in and out of melee to be able to maximize both your damage and survivability. In PvE (group based content) it's 100% melee - even if longbow is being used. Add into this only some pets are worth using and they have buggy/dumb a.i., I definitely recommend the Mechanist. Many ranger mains have moved onto that class because the bot is the pet we've always wanted.

Ultimately it's up to you, but I think that will fit what you want the most.

The new Virtuoso specialization for Mesmer is a super high damage spec and anything but a burden in endgame. Also, Mesmers can serve a variety of other purposes besides high DPS and therefore have never been considered a "burden."

Hi,

I did try the engineer, it seems like i`m playing the piano at times, so many buttons...its confusing and hard to play for me.

This is the only fear I have in this game, starting a class that in the end when I chose a specialization its not good, even thou that the leveling experience is so much fun and smooth.

The rifle mechanist has, at it's core, a rotation of 1 button. A couple more if you have to break bars. Playing an engineer and playing a mechanist are very different experiences. Elite specs can fundamentally change the way a class plays.  I second the rifle mechanist, it's the only class I can raid on, because I don't have to focus on a complex rotation so I can focus on raid mechanics.

You need to spec into Machinist.

The subclass replaces toolbelt skills with a F1-F3 that can be set to autocast, and your 6,7,8,9,0 buttons can all be passive signets that you only have to activate sometimes, and you also have a pet that does damage and supports allies for you. Its currently both one of the highest DPS builds in the game (and high range with rifle), and one of the most effective support builds in the game (HAM-Heal Alacrity Machinist).

Quickness Scrapper can also use rifle, and is very effective in groups because all they have to do is spam gyros to give the group lots of Quickness, Superspeed and protection. When taking the Flamethrower with Juggernaught you also have pulsing Stability and can literally play half AFK.

I recommend reading the wiki entry on Engineer to learn more about its subclasses, and to watch YouTube videos of the subclasses in action compared to core Engineer.

mesmer

If you have the End of dragons expansion Mesmer can get the Virtuoso Elite specialization. It Simplifies the Mesmer kit a little. Your main weapon is a dagger, which you shoot at mid range at opponents. Damage is high, playstyle is easy. Instead of clones you get floating blades you can also shoot at people. As long as you build correctly (Condition damage and crit) you will do good damage, while having good sustain. So the likely hood you gonna drag the team down is slim. You don't need to reach the Eod Expansion to get access to the elites, just have bought it.
