Chromium Embedded Framework Host for Guild Wars 2 stopped to work [Merged]

Have you ever developed software?  The end-user isn't the only person affected when a company drops support.  There's all sorts of development libraries and tools that no longer get supported either.  And when new versions are released to support newer hardware, the older stuff ends up falling by the wayside.  A developer has to maintain the old hardware and development environment for the older stuff as updates happen and that can cause big headaches when code gets split.

Ironically, you mention WoW, which has minimum specs of now of DX12, not the DX9 it was originally released with.

I have developed software before. The point is, Anet can support Win7 since there isn't a lot of dependencies specific to Win10/11 that they need. The CEF issues reported here aren't Win7 related. As long as the end-user has DX11 compatible hardware and OS, they should be good to go.

WoW supports Win7 (x64)

CEF on Win7 though seems down to version of CEF.  You say you tested the latest version yourself on your system, yet you know well that's not adequate testing for something that would be deployed on a wider variety of systems.  And you don't know either if you tested all of the functions where GW2 and CEF interface to ensure you don't run into a problem either.  If officially the latest CEF isn't supported on Win7, what would be the reason for that?  We should be able to find out.

My guess is there's a mistake in how Anet is using/configuring CEF and they should be able to find it.  The same problem has been reported by some Win10 and Win11 users too.  It just happens to hit a lot of Win7 machines.  There was another poster that commented yesterday about it working on his Win7 box but not his Win10 and Win11 rigs.

I tested it by downloading the latest stable version of CEF and unpacking it in the GW2/bin64/cef folder. CefHost.exe loads and runs as it did before, which means the libcef.dll loaded successfully. I was able to login and load the gem store fine.

It's also possible there are a lot more Win7 users than we thought 🙂

I'm not touching anything on my current pc, I've got precious legal documents stored on it. And since I suck with computers, no way I'll try stuff I don't understand.

I've been with win7 for several years, always careful, never had a virus, never installed suspicious soft. Everything is still running smoothly, GW2 included except twice because of that specific Chromium error for the last 2 months.

New pc on its way for games only. Another week or 2 to get it but I already hate the idea of having to  put up with win10.

I'm starting to think we should start reporting users who come here to derail the thread by spamming it with variations of the ''get windows 10/11" messages. If you are not here to brainstorm ideas on how to resolve the issue on win7 itself or report the issue on your machine, i would kindly ask you to stop derailing the thread.

I had the same launcher-freeze problem, so the first thing I did was update my graphics drivers, but to no avail.  I tried adding usecoherent to the command line.  No joy there either.  I then found that other games started misbehaving or not launching at all.

*Ding!!*  Rollback that graphics driver!  💡

Everything works well now using Nvidia's driver from last December (...along with the usecoherent fix).

P.S.  Thanks everyone (especially Chaba) for all the brainstorming and patient support.

if you don't know much about computers, AND you have important legal documents on an ancient system, you should REALLY consider creating backups

I already have 2 backups 😉 regularly updated but I need to access those files very often and I only have my current pc to do it. Couldn't afford another one those past years. Thats why I've been and still am so cautious with it. It seems it was a good deal after all these years, I took care of it and it took care of me, never had any problem with it 🙂

Cant play GW2 because Chromium freezes the launcher..  well I'm not happy with it for sure. I really love this game. But it won't kill me to wait for a fix from Anet or for the new pc. Their fix worked last month so maybe this time it will too. Meantime I can rely on a few Good Old Games 😉

When the game starts to launch I get the popup message from the antiviral software: "Chromium Embedded Host for Guild Wars 2 does not have a valid digital signature". Choosing to "Allow this instance" does allow the game to launch, but the TP does not work if I try to buy or sell items. It just has a spinner that keeps spinning. I will try using the option people have suggested for coherentUI.  I have a Windows 10 computer with a new CPU and new graphics card.

And Final Fantasy 14 still work on win 7 🙂 I have no problem with it so far. Even more Black Desert work on it. So old and outdated game like BDO can support ancient technology, but such modern game as gw2 with next gen graphic and stuff can't 🙂

Exception code: 0x80000003

This is interesting.

The crashing module, cefhost either:
- Has a memory leak on your system
- Doesn't like your anti-virus software
- Doesn't like your possible filesystem corruption
- Doesn't like some bad registry entry
- Doesn't like your drivers
- Doesn't like how your Windows page file is set up

See for example:

https://www.auslogics.com/en/articles/fix-breakpoint-error-0x80000003/

Edit: Just note I'm not sure if this error is the same code for Win7.  Haven't yet found Win7-specific information about it.

Yes, very. A game company can't maintain ancient technology forever. Windows 7 is from 2008. Final Fanatsy 14 doesn't support players with windows 7 related issues since 2017.

Nope, only since January 14, 2020 and the game still works on 7 (https://na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/news/detail/9508ac6e1c5fe186effc1deace3eed87ccfe9faa)

Look at the comment below yours and above this one.

I meant before now, but never mind.  As long as the game remains a big deal in markets like China, where 1/4 to 1/3 of computers are still running Windows 7, they'll likely have an interest in its support.

I don't want to start (or continue) a debate about whether is a good decision to remove the support to Win7 (it seems there are a lot of people still using it, for good or bad). I just want to point out that in this post:

https://www.guildwars2.com/en-gb/news/guild-wars-2-minimum-system-requirements-update/

ArenaNet announced the intention to drop the support for dx9, and to check that our GPU supported DirectX 11. They gave us 4 months. They didn't mention anything about Win7 though. A lot of old GPU are able to run GW2 and support dx11, even under Win7. I hope they will find a permanent fix for this problem, or if they really want to force people to stop using Win7, at least give more time.

I have win 7 and I guess that's the problem.

And my laptop got weird (as in i couln't play gw2) when i tried the free win 10 so had to go back to win 7. Don't want to risk buying win 11 because of that and can't afford a new computer, probably for several years...

Can you make the game work for those of us with win 7?

Please?
