https://imgur.com/a/QO1UwActually it was a very nice and polite response.

Is the game really this toxic as to not allow me to play a specific character and enjoy group battles?Shameful. So here is the main thing: you can absolutely play whatever you want in WvW,but the more you play in there the more you will understand that certain classes/professions excel in different roles and context. The general idea is to have a balanced group to deal with most of the things you could face: you want to have stability,u want nice heals and condi cleanse, stack might and so on,which kinda makes sense.Unfortunately, the problem with that is certain professions brings alot of those things (like a guardian) while other professions lack of those "utilities" (in terms of quantity or effectiveness) and are more focused in a specific roles. For this reason u will find often picky players wanting a specific comp for their group, just for the sake of being "strong" on paper by folliwng a "current meta".

U will find commanders and people following this idea as a fucking religion and ofc commanders and people more "chilled" about it.

When im playing on my Thief/DD i usually roam around, take enemy's camp, escort dolys and i do alot of scouting for the current tag.And even tho im not a class that "meets their current requirements", i often get invited in groups and get promoted as a scout.Other times some commanders send me gold, rewarding my good calls even if Im not in their squad.Other times i get nothing from some commanders: no invites,no rewards...some times not even a damn "thank you" after saving their ass multiple times.I aswell play other professions in WvW: i might roam around with my warrior (there are specific build for that) for like an hour, then join a squad for group fights (there are different, specific build for that aswell). But generally i always ask if they want me to swap to something they need,if i dont mind playing something different in that moment (and if the queue isnt that huge). But since you are a new player,i understand u dont have a pletora of max levels to swap to.

When you dont get invites u can do 3 things imo:

  • dont give a fuck about it,get on the voice com and follow the tag anyways
  • make your own "outcast" squad and then follow the tag or havoc around...and trust me there will be players willing to join you
  • level one of the "most wanted" profession in your spare time and join up the meta comp. With daily rewards and wvw tracks you will get tons of leveling tomes you can use to max to 80 a guardian, necro or rev,in no time.

I know it sucks sometimes, its frustrating others, but u know,PoF will be released in less than 7 hours: everything is going to change atleast for a bit....with a new META lul

Couple of things: unless the squad was full, there should be no need to kick anyone. That is where the wvw attitude has declined sharply since the pips were introduced (pips are serious business for some of these commanders who fashion themselves as the next napolean or something).

But on a positive note, if you can follow the zerg without being in a squad, and learn to survive without the boons or getting carried by others in a squad, you will be better than 85% of the zerglings who get confused when their '1' button doesn't get them kills or their squad mates dont keep them alive. In fact, a majority of the people who WvW can't even leave the spawn area unless they are in a zerg, as they have no idea how to function without help from others.

If you really want to see toxicity in WvW, equiped a long bow and pull out the bear pet. You should see some really interesting comments then.

In any case, you can do just fine on ranger outside of squads or joining up with other thieves and rangers. Use your range to your advantage, pick off stragglers, use the fact that you do not have to be in melee or have to copy what the core does and play the ranger you want to play. That's what I do on my own ranger. You get just as much loot and I am alawys having a blast fighting the enemy thieves and rangers trying to do the same to us.

Yah, he/she can still participate. He just can't be in the squad to do it. Because....he can't bring more boons to the group as a whole? So that would explain why he asked to be invited politely, how he was rejected and kicked. And the answer to why he was kicked was because of the profession he was currently on.

Hatred....annoyance....disregard....

His class was unacceptable, even if it was politely stated that his profession was considered useless overall to the group.

Yah, it could not have been stated any more polite than, "I'm deeply sorry, but your on a profession that is firmly believed to not have any innate value to our group at this time. Once your profession has something more useful to contribute, maybe then you can be proudly added to our endevours and join our party/havoc/zerg on some future date in question...by the way, Would you happen to have any Gray Poupon?"

Yes, it was very polite indeed.

Lol..

so, the commander wasn't toxic nor rude, but his opinion is not acceptable to you.

Play the game as you wish, but the commander can't?

Hatred, disgust? No. Just not wanted for their group.

Problem is, you get it, but you would rather stir a pot.

Last time I checked people get 5 character slots with the base game. Two with free to play.

Build one toon for WvW and another for PvE.

Or come on here and complain. It's IS up to you.

Troll post?

That was pretty cordial as far as wvw interactions go. But if you believe they defamed your character and you want to show them who's boss then roll an Engineer. They didn't say no Engineers ;) .

Engineer main since 2012.

Play what you like dude. Just make yourself useful and make an effort to learn the game mode (wvw).

Shameful.

Oh my lord.

  1. 'The game' is kind of a sweeping generality here.
  2. Commanders are allowed to choose the group comp for their squad.
  3. No one is disallowing you from anything but joining that commander's squad.
  4. 'Shameful' is a meaningless editorial slur meant to spread around how bad you feel. It's bad form; cut it out.
  5. The person who whispered you to explain was being kind - speaking of toxic, you didn't even thank them.
  6. Rangers make good roamers, if you are bent on playing a ranger.
  7. Asking something politely does not guarantee you a 'yes.' No one is ever owed acquiescence simply for not being rude. The second half of asking politely is being able to take a declination of your request gracefully.

Learn to roam on ranger, run with an open, no comp squad, or roll a meta class and learn to play it. You might love it.

Yes I agree it was toxic especially for a NEW player to gw2... what a way to welcome someone into the game as a whole. I kind of wish you didn't start in wvw because that is seriously a place full of this sort of nonsense. As a player since 2012 and a thief I can say I get kicked out of more groups I join than not. But here's the great thing... just follow them anyway. It's a free game mode where nobody can kick you from it. If they don't want you in the group just add the commander as a friend and when they switch maps you look at your friends list, find where they go, and follow them whether they like it or not. Maybe the lack of buffs means you die and rally some enemies. So be it, their fault for not providing the group buffs. I hope you have a better experience in the rest of the game. Feel free to add me if you need help or advice in the future.

I started wvw on a ranger. I very quickly saw it wasn't optimal and I couldn't contribute to the group as much on ranger. So I made a mesmer and then an elementalist. You can run around on a ranger and follow the tag and do solo things, but wvw is a group effort and you'll most likely have more fun on a class which is contributing more. You want in a semi organized squad, play something they need.

Interesting comment. Not sure what from the PMs that were sent that wasn't 'friendly'?

It's one spot in a group... surely the commander would have allowed this person to join them to give them a good first experience and maybe they decide the game mode is awesome! Maybe they come back and figure out that ranger isnt the best idea and they decide ya know... I've wanted to try guardian anyway! But no.... this person decided that one spot was SOOOO necessary to follow some weird meta that they couldn't give a new player a good first experience. It's counterproductive if the WvW wants a growing community to maybe set aside an optimal comp and show some new people around a bit. It might not have been the most rude thing I have seen in WvW but come on... they pushed this new player out.

What's counterproductive here is fostering OP's sense of being hard done by, instead of giving them/other prospective WVWers tips on how to break into an unfamiliar map. You don't create community by demonizing the commanders. WVW can be very fun and rewarding, but getting into it is intimidating and confusing; there are a zillion rules everyone else seems to know by heart, and if you don't know them, everyone is too frantically WVWing to help you out. No particular commander owes any particular new player some of their squad time. I agree wholeheartedly that including and teaching new players is what will save the mode, however.

So for the OP and whoever else is reading this thread, what can we suggest to get them into the mode as painlessly as possible? I think we have covered the importance of bringing a meta class.

The only so called toxic thing is the lol person but we don't know why they did it.

Squads are inherently exclusive and offer specific functionality such as boonshare which is important to the survival of melee. If he has not enough space you endanger the rest of the group.

I think it is very unfair to accuse someone of things when you do not understand what the point of a squad is. That is toxic. You do not need to join a squad to follow a tag. They did not insult you personally, but you did.

If your plan is to be part of a zerg group then you'll have a very rough road ahead of you, due this game classes's nature, not every class will be optimal for X or Y content, some will excel in X and lack on Y and so on. If you happen to have some friends, you could totally run a small roaming group and cap small objectives like camps and towers and leave the big ones for the zergs.

Rangers are notorious for being excellent roamers, specially Druid if spec well can be nigh unkillable and bring a lot to small scale skirmishes, I reckon that Soulbeast will also fit well in that description.

All I can say is do not WvW anymore, WvW isn't a friendly place where people joke around and have fun. People just want to get things done. People get angry. That said, you might enjoy roaming solo on a ranger or just following squad without joining, then you'll gradually see if you can handle the bad atmosphere of the game mode.

While I wouldn't call the commander toxic or rude, I would call them a bit too stuck in the meta. Players who actually communicate are rare in my experience, and bring usefulness way beyond their class and build. I rather play with a core ranger who is communicating and coordinating with me than a guardian who doesn't even listen. I say try and find a guild and work your way from there. Find what you like doing, and figure out how to do it as good as possible while still having fun. I play an elementalist, which means I mostly do healing and take down arrow carts, and when no tag is up I roam and flip camps. Is the latter effective? Well, no, but I enjoy it and that's what matters.

Rangers offer nothing to the group. Theives at least offer venoms, which will instantly cause everyone to judge you for running to begin with.

However, if you were running Druid they probably would've been more open to it. Druid can actually put out a reasonable amount of healing, and can fill a tempest's slot if there's not enough tempests.
