Age old race question....???

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I am like seriously stuck here. Have made a Necro of every race and for the life of me I cannot decide on which to play.

I'm thinking Charr is probably out as not a huge fan of the running and always hunched over look, but maybe someone can sway me? 😉

Asura is fun as the animations are spot on but we know fashion is a bit tiny and they kinda feel too cute to be a Necro?

Sylvari isnt bad, keep leaning that way but not completely sold.

Human is just so vanilla so thats a no.

And then good ol Norn, big lumbering masses that for the most part arent bad either just they feel so sluggish.

So, here I am! Now i know that race choice is 100% subjective and a personal choice but just looking more for what you picked and why. Curious as to why people are playing Necro as such and such race.

Cheers!

Mine is sylvari for growth (Sylvari) and decay (Necromancer).

Still I used to be tempted to make a human one because I once hoped that racial skills could mean something in this game and Reaper of Grenth was striking me as a great concept skill paired with necromancer (the 180s CD for a skill effect that's not even worth a 60s CD simply killed this hope, thought).

I'm personally a big fan of charr necros. They have a lot of interesting fashion combos that no other race can pull off. Specifically with all the shamanistic sets. You can really make your charr look like he's a sorceror that lives in a swamp or hut. I also love how they look in Reaper shroud

Chars have some of the best animation. I love  their axe and pistol animations

Before writing off asura as being cute, consider:

Short. Sharp teeth. Big ears. Grayish or greenish skin. Somewhat hyperactive animations.

In short, they're pretty close to being goblins.

Probably want to be a male asura to really pull that off, since the female asura do have features that are a bit softer and cuter on average, but that little goblin energy is definitely there if you want to lean into it.

The main story line, as well as Heart of Thorns, will make a lot more sense and carry greater significance when viewed through the eyes of the Sylvari.

I get the HOT reference as I did that on my Warrior, but main story line? How so??

I think it's mostly that you know who Trahearne and certain other characters are if you've played the right level 10 and 20 stories as a sylvari, and that sylvari have the whole 'killing the dragon is your calling' thing as opposed to other races that feel a bit more like they simply stumbled into it.

That's more of a justification to play sylvari at least once than to play a necromancer as sylvari specifically, though...

I have three necros on my account, sylvari, I do not play, can't pull off aesthetics that would feel unique on him, asura, who wears Tribal armor for reaper and he wore Godskull weapons until recently, now he has Nectotic essence weapons, he looks like pygmy witch doctor or shaman, and recolored Warbeast and breather mask for harb, like some enhanced crazy scientist, who experimented on himself and the last one is female charr of Ash legion, swords fits her well, necro agent who thematically uses blood magic and these sort of things for assassination and interrogation. I do not RP, but like my characters lore friendly and unique.

edit: Scourge charr would wierdly fit too as Olmakhan tribe use sand magic.

bit overkill isn't it.

Human necros are the best ones objectively because of the Reaper of Grenth elite skill, that fits both thematically, and pulses poison and chill, that have synergy both with the death magic trait line and the reaper trait line

If you think asura are cute you haven't spent enough time around them. Yes they're short and enthusiastic but as someone else said they're basically goblins, even the good ones often consider ethics optional and they've got a long history with necromancy, including seeing it as a variant on golemancy.

I made an asuran necromancer whose ambition was to find new ways to combine it with golemancy, but for various reasons (nothing to do with the concept not working) ended up re-working him to be a holosmith.

I currently have two necromancers:
1) A norn who is a devotee of raven who studies necromancy as a way of understanding the relationship between life and death, he focuses on skills that manipulate life force and looks like a typical sorcerer or shaman (the exact style varies).
2) An Iron Legion charr (specifically a harbinger) who studies necromancy to further understand the ghosts of Ascalon, hoping to eventually find a way to stop them coming back. She takes a much more practical, scientific approach to it and dresses more like an engineer or a steampunk scientist doing field work. (I had the character concept for years, originally as an engineer, but I already had a charr thief and didn't want two in medium armour).

Yeah, the existence of Phlunt plus a quick look through some of the original concept art should dispel that "cute" notion. 😆

It also shows their cultural look was originally conceptualized with a more elaborate ritual/tribal style, given some of the outfits (especially Oola, who not coincidentally was also a Necro-Golemancer).

Again thanks all for the replies, have been a huge help! Currently I am running with a Charr as I want something beastly and such for a "Shi no Zenchō"...Japanese for Harbinger of death, thus his name. So far so good I just really wish Charr stood a bit more upright but then again the somewhat hunched look is alot like WOW's Gul'dan.  😉

I am a sylvari necromancer. Its by far my favorite pair up due to the lore. As Slyvari have a natural curiosity towards death since they don't experience it like other races do. There's also some really interesting lore related to the main story and HoT that make the pair up even more sinister and interesting.

Gemstore item, introduced in the past year or so I think? Do a search in the back items section of the wardrobe for "serpent" and it will probably come up.

Thanks again ALL for all the suggestions and comments. I tried Charr and it just doesnt work. The swishing of the tail and running on all fours just kills it for me (plus i am not a huge cat fan even though we have 2...lol).

So sticking with the lil dude for now. trying to make him creepy as since the animations and such are fun to play and holding the big ol scythe is kinda cool!

Cheers!!!

(plus, I think the spear animations are gonna be sweet as well!)  😉

I never want to make a plant, The goblin is a no. Charr looks dumb in the reaper hood, norn is too bulky for my taste for necromancer, so the best one and the one I chose is obviously Human, Besides, they are at the center of the world anyways. Long live humans.

That was my first Necro, now just a mule....Human just got so vanilla to me.  😉

And the only reason I go for the little dude is gameplay, i.e. animations and such. haven't done too bad in the fashion end for him and yeah, I agree with you on the others. Thought Norn would work but they just so slow feeling....
