So 5 min in a chair and you are in character select now?

login early for TT to avoid a full map? Nah, gg...

teq? Pfft, good luck next time...

Chalk? Better hope nobody lures a mob while you wait for the useless wall to fall down...

Tarir? You better found something to do for the next 30 minutes...

recently slain TM? Gee, you better have the next10 minutes available...

I think ANET needs to clarify the writeup better. It is a little confusing.

"In open-world maps, the time remaining before a player who has not manually moved their character or performed any skill inputs is returned to character select is now reduced to 5 minutes if the player enters combat."

What's confusing about that?

Just don't afk farm while waiting -> problem solved.

It's not hard to not enter combat while being afk.

ok, I did a test, and it seems this is not working as intended. That or maybe it works on a map with a known farm spot but since I don't do that, I have no idea where to test it.

edit: nope, I just afk for 40 minutes (I actually forgot I was logged in) and my character is still there, killing everything that spawns.

You have two very simple options to avoid this while waiting for something to start/end:

1) Don't get into combat while waiting
2) Move or use a skill once every 5 minutes

For example after the Chak meta there's no enemies near the wall, so you can go AFK without getting into combat and get the entire duration of the existing timer (I'm not even sure how long that is, but it's longer than the wait time). If you're waiting for Teqatl and one of the fish heads attacks you - putting you into combat and starting the 5 minute timer - move away from it, then you're not AFK and won't get kicked and also won't be attacked.

If you've ever done activities like Sanctum Sprint where you have to wait for the race to end to get the reward you'll likely have seen the inactivity warnings (because instances have a much shorter timer) and you'll know you literally just have to push one button to avoid it. Step forward once and you're counted as active and won't be kicked. (And if you've done activities and never seen the warning you've never been in a state the game considers AFK and therefore don't need to worry about it.)

Just tested this. Got on my skyscale and hovered for 14 minutes without being sent to the character screen.

It sounds like it's not working right now, but also that wouldn't trigger the 5-minute timer anyway, because you're not in combat.

It's to stop afk farming. But I do think this might be a bit much. It's not that unusual to be afk for a while, maybe waiting for an event, and potentially be put into combat if some mob shows up. It might kill you, or someone else kills it, but either way you didn't get any unwarranted rewards. You shouldn't lose your place on a map because of that. I would change this to start the 5 minute timer if you get a kill credit, rather than when you just enter combat.

I mean, when you're waiting for an event, aren't you usually moving a bit around, as you constantly check if it's up?

I'm kind of jealous of all these people who can apparently get into position for an event and then completely ignore the game until it's due to start. If I arrived on the map 10 minutes before an event then genuinely went AFK and did something else I'd be lucky to come back to the game 1/2 way through instead of when it's over and everyone has left. The most I can do is have an internet browser open on the same computer so I can see both that and the game.

I was testing to see if just afking on a skyscale, much like a chair(considered a mount), would take you to the load screen. A post about waiting for a meta event was concerned about this.

The patch notes say "In open-world maps, the time remaining before a player who has not manually moved their character or performed any skill inputs is returned to character select is now reduced to 5 minutes if the player enters combat." So it was already clear that being on a mount or in a chair wouldn't initiate the 5-minute timer unless you got attacked.

(Apparently it's also not working correctly now, but when it is it still won't affect AFKing on a skyscale.)

So you just regularly walk away from your computer for more than 5 minutes while waiting on things?

Only if it's an event that doesn't pop at a specific time. If you're sitting in DE waiting for the Soo-won pre-events to start, you don't need to keep checking up whether the escorts are going yet. They start every 2 hours on the hour and that's never going to change. You just look at the clock.

Even if it's something that starts randomly, you could still know it's going to take more than 5 minutes to come back - like if it's on a 30 minute cooldown and someone says "it just finished 10 minutes ago."
