Please fix Character Select Screen.

Recommended Posts

I did a search and only found 1 other thread on this topic from over a year ago with 0 responses, so i'm giving it another go.

Please fix Character Select Screen. It's a complete mess compared to every other game i've ever played (Including Guild Wars 1). Having characters move around at all times depending on what character you were last logged into is still as stupid now as it was 7 years ago during Beta Weekends.

I'm guessing i'm not the only player in the world who has a Main character and alts who each do different things, such as Crafting professions, and having no way at all to lock the position of characters and move them around without having to log into every single character in a very specific order is simply stupid. Like i stated earlier, you did this better in Guild Wars 1. Please fix this already.

Yes, and it actually shows more than 2 if you have extra crafting slots unlocked. How is this relevant at all to my post though?

I don't see how having small icons on the pictures for each character solves the problem of them always being moved around in the list whenever you log into one of them. This is something i've never seen in another game, they literally handled this better in Guild Wars 1 than they do in Guild Wars 2.

I feel like I have seen this topic before and more recently than a year ago. Wording is different, but concept is the same. Or maybe it was just something that came up in the comments of other topics.... Im not actually sure.Anyways, call it fixing, updating or improving, I think a number of people agree to some sort of change. Personally I would like some sort of change too. I'd be happy with something is simple as option to organise characters by race/profession/age. If more than just that, maybe a different form of grid/list so you can see all characters at all times, for easier selection.

Well yeah it works, but i can say the same about my old car i learnt to drive in, it worked, but it was a piece of shit. It's clunky and quite honestly a mess to work with/around. Not having any options to lock/sort is a major oversight, as well as not having enough room to actually show the amount of characters the game can handle per server. I don't even have that many characters, i have bought 1 extra on-top of the 2 i've gotten from expansions, and i still can't view my characters without scrolling through the list.

No but this seem to indicate you have trubble finding with of you characters have what crafting.

who has a Main character and alts who each do different things, such as Crafting professions

I wish it showed what -level- they had.

I goofed and a bunch of my alts have professions so i have to use an outside tracker to keep track of it.

I have no trouble knowing which character has which profession even without looking at the icons. Problem is knowing where in the list they will be at any given time. At any given time i use a certain crafter alot more than another, for example when doing legendary crafting, then i would love to be able to have that character at a locked position at all times so i know where in my list it is, like i can in any other game with a character select screen (once again, like Guild Wars 1).

I don't think the character screen issues right now are that high priority, but there are a few bugs I've had with it. If I switch chars quickly, the character order gets messed up and the most recent one is no longer first on the list. If I get DCed, it oftentimes shows 0% map completion on that character, which can be confusing/scary for someone seeing it for the first time.

However, the main thing I would like for the character select screen is more customization: background, character sorting, soundtrack, weapons displayed, etc.

I don't see why they can't just put a "toggle" character lock option instead of anything else. I do understand that the characters always refreshing on the char select screen from most recent to last is annoying. It's also annoying for very organized people to have to scroll things and having things rearranged on them every time they do something. A simple character lock "toggle" option would be a perfect fix. And, yes, I think it does need to be fixed.

Couldn't agree more.

It is not an issue if you only have five characters and the list doesn't scroll. Seeing them all, its not hard to pick out where your toon is.

However, as soon as you get more than 5 and the characters scroll of the page, it becomes a problem trying to find them only because:

  1. You can't see them all
  2. They change position

I like the "toggle off" feature mentioned above. That would be great! I do not need a bunch of organizing stuff, just give me the option to suspend the order change feature and it would be so much better.

i have 16, all but two of those have some form of crafting profession due to me goofing around. I know there are people with more characters than that. -however- we should be able to lock our favorite characters in place ;-;

@Sunapollo.9152 said:I use some characters as mules and it’ll be great to see what they have at character screen instead of logging in and out!

I'm not at home right now and can't verify it, but I think you can check individual characters inventories at gw2timer.com and/or gw2efficiency if you have the appropriate API attached.

OT: I agree with the OP. The Character select screen is awful. When logging through my chars for gathering and such, it doesn't even consistently place them at first position after logging out, so I have to memorize which char I'm logged in with to avoid repeatedly logging in with the same character from the last position on the select bar. Needless to say, I'm not always successful...

However, they sometimes don't move around when you last logged into them... I do make use of the fact that the character I last logged in on, moves to the front, so when I do my daily rotation, I can move to the back of the line and grab that character. However, sometimes the latest character stays in the back. And sometimes it "sticks" and stays the first, no matter how many other characters you go to.

I think OP might be surprised at how many players enjoy having their most recently played toons near the front. That said, I agree that the character selection would benefit from a variety of improvements from simply being able to see more toons at once to being able to access more or at least more relevant information about them. The ability to see them all at once and sort them based on different criteria would be fantastic . . .

But if I sat down and thought about it I could probably come up with several dozen things I'd rather see anet working on . . .

I would like option added that could change what character information is shown. For example - disable crafting icons. I have only one master crafter character and some other characters have these (now) useless crafting icons because i accidentally clicked teach me while simply wanting to trade with npc or from beginning times when i was learning game.

Character related notes would be nice too. Like a sticky note reminder snippet when you mouse over.

Proper sorting is something unknown for the UI of GW2. Fortunately the sigil/rune rework was updated to at least have a search button so maybe they could add a search button on character select. Or have a dropdown menu for easier/faster selection of characters. But the best would be different ways to sort them

And that's great for the people who enjoy having their characters shuffle around, and changing the character select wouldn't harm them in anyway what-so-ever. They could just Not lock their character positions...

Which I think I covered when I indicated that such improvements would be 'fantastic' . . ?
