  1. I guess it depends on what you expect from the community, myself, I have very low expectations so I'm constantly suprised by just how nice/helpful most of the people are, of course if you have low expectations, don't wear your feeling on your shirt sleeve, and try to help others you'll probably get back from the community what you give.
  2. I did it for the AP (I did the same leveling Scribe to 400 which cost a ton of gold lol), making ascended food is a nice benefit if you have the need, the cost wasn't for me that much since I horde lots of items, but I'm now within striking distance of the 15k AP I'm been working towards for the last month or so.
  3. Do you have a post somewhere that I could reference? I assume your talking about GW2 on Linux? if so here you go. https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/31192/playing-guild-wars-2-on-linux-performance-optimizations-and-more/p1
  4. The biggest issue to me with MS ending support for Win 7 is that hardware manufactures will also drop support in the form of drivers, it's not as big a deal with legacy hardware (because the drivers already exist) but if you want to build or buy a new PC on the latest hardware and run Win 7 as your OS your going to have a big problem very shortly with driver support for those nice new features you upgraded your hardware to get. Win X is of course a option and will have all the hardware driver support you would need but.... no version of Win X including Enterprise or LTSB give 100% total control over your PC OS, you can put off updates for awhile but sooner or later MS is going to force them onto your PC, it's just a fact of life. For me, with the help of others here on this forum I made the switch to Linux and have been happily running GW2 through Wine/Lutris on Linux for months, like anything it has had its moments but no worse than running GW2 on Win X IMHO..... but this too isn't a solution for everyone running Win 7 and needing compatibility with other Windows based software.
  5. I'm also solo roamed in EBG flipping camps and killing guards, it is much harder now with the Warclaw and the few time a Warclaw has helped me escape being killed the new lance has pretty well ruined that since now I can be knocked off my mount and no amount of evasive maneuvers can get you out of that except sheer luck. Most days I don't mind becoming someones bag but it does get old rather quickly, still it is fun/enjoyable to see just how deep into enemy territory you can get, killing a few supply yaks and capping a supply camp is all the better...lol
  6. A group I was in the other night started out just doing mobs, as the group members increased the commander asked if we wanted to do a few doors which we all agreed to do, then awhile later our group had grown to the point where we had the numbers to effectively take on all the legendary bosses including Steve mowing right through them in just a few minuets each.... it was a nice run that was able to scale up to just roll through the content, the point is that the group changed as we had the numbers to do the content without wiping.
  7. Been there, Done that, Got the T-Shirt from WvW reward track, quick and easy.
  8. Squads also allow the commander to see how much supplies each member, and the group as a total are carrying, this helps in knowing if enough supplies exist in the group to build the necessary siege or if a trip to a depot, keep, or tower is necessary for resupply before taking on a objective.
  9. This ^^^^^^Sometimes is just a dead map with no activity, in that case I normally build siege, flip camps, and towers if there is enough players around. The Warclaw is really a must to get around most maps, while it doesn't really add that much of a advantage over using your feet (speed-wise) it does help with giving you more mobility. I had the very same feelings when I started in WvW as the OP has, a few other players helped me out with advice on scouting or defending, one person can make a difference if you plan ahead knowing that the opposition is going to come for your tower or keep eventually. Unfortunately it takes time to learn and that equates to a lot of deaths, after several years of playing WvW daily I have to say that even in it's current state it is my favorite thing to do in GW2 and I rarely follow a zerg unless they have a commander I like to follow. Unlike PVE the map in WvW is important to keep a eye on, after awhile you'll find yourself predicting where the opposition is going/doing by watching things flip, there is a element of strategy in playing, it just takes some time and experience to figure it out.
  10. And don't forget no mount or gliding in EoTM either. We have a group that still runs EoTM every night, mostly to help new players get fast reward track completion for the Warclaw, most nights it takes around 30 min to cap every tower and keep if we have a mes for ports with little to no resistance except for vet NPCs so it's quick and fast....surprisingly most nights it's 20+ people in the party.
  11. I basically think it's ok for new players to have access to mounts, but personally I think everyone should have to level their first toon naturally, or at least time gate levels so a person on their first experiences in the game can't go from lvl 1 to lvl 80 in minuets, after the first toon yes I don't think hours in-game should have a bearing on being a lvl 80.It's odd to see people in WvW chat saying they just started playing the game a few days ago...and complain that they have to jump a few hoops to get a warclaw..., wait till they want a griffon! lol
  12. Maybe 10 most of the time in the evenings, but that is because we have a regular group that runs EToM every night, out of the 20-25 normally in the group about 10 are regulars that I try to keep track of and do other events with, I do purge people from time to time and add new people I meet but that is mostly guildies. During the daytime maybe 2 or 3 are online.
  13. Like a lot of you....way too many to pick just one but two recent that stand out was a couple guild members crafted me four 20 slot bags for a new toon I rolled, and just last night in EB I was treb'in SMC from a blind position and someone offered to spot for me. There are lots of nice, kind, and non-toxic people playing GW2 which is why I've stayed for over 6 years.
  14. Only a guess but so many people have a love/hate relationship with Windows, you hate it as a OS but everything you love only (for the most part) runs on Windows. Linux is a very modern, stable, operating system, there is lots of variety in DEs along with a ton more security, the compatibility layer that software like Wine provides is probably one of the biggest favors a Linux developer could give to the Windows community. Of course this is just my opinion.
  15. LOL I can remember a time before mounts of any kind, a lot of us here remember when it cost to have armor repaired or you had to walk everywhere, people yelled and screamed for mounts and now we have a lot of them, but would I go back....nope, mounts make the game more enjoyable as does gliding, in fact I wish areas like EOTM would let us use mounts and gliding but that's just me.
  16. I can sympathize with the OP, I want a Skyscale but at this point I'm not interested in doing what is required to have the mount quickly, sadly I felt the same way about a Griffon when it was a new mount and a month or so ago finally completed getting one. My problem with the Skyscale is that other than hanging on a vertical surface which might help in climbing that (surface) cliff I don't really see a need for the mount..... is it a cool mount?, sure, and I will eventually get the Skyscale but I'm not going to worry about having one "right now" just because all the other cool kids have it. I'll just do a little at a time whenever I feel like it till I have the mount, if it takes months....well it is/was my choice, it's kinda' the same way I feel about Legendary stuff, every precursor I've acquired (from drops) I've sold on the TP because I just refused to do the grind to make a Legendary.
  17. No offense intended here.... How in one week could you have possibility explored everything GW2 has to offer just in maps alone..... I'm going to assume you have already leveled a toon to 80 by using boosters, if so you missed a lot of content that you really need to experience at least once, when your on your 4, 5, or 10 toon that's the time to short cut to level 80. If you think that's a big deal wait till you want a Griffon. Best of luck and Welcome to GW2
  18. ...so, I was in the market to refresh my current system (AMD 8 core Bulldozer), but with the news prior and after Computex I decided I'd wait 6-12 months or so to build a new system just to see how the AMD vs Intel battle actually shakes out.In the mean time I had a opportunity to buy a referb HP Z800 workstation for cheap (less than $400) and the specs might surprise you. First let me say that my primary goal has been to move off Windows totally switching to Linux and of course I need to run Windows games and programs either in a VM or on a bare metal Linux box.... sound impossible? naw! The spec of the Z800 are:PSU: 1115W CPU (s): 2x Xeon 5650 6 core 2.66 GHZ (yea slow but we don't really care that much about clock cycles)(12 physical threads 24 hyper threads) RAM: 96 gig of DDR3 ECC memory (yeah a total waste, way more memory than it'll ever need or use) ( the ECC memory alone cost more than I paid for the entire PC) GPU (s): 2x AMD Radeon RX570 (4 gig) (purchased to add to the system) (older but still viable cards for my usage) I need two cards because I run 4 monitors and like to multi-task, and don't want to over task one card trying to do everything I might ask it to do. (these cards are NOT in Crossfire although I have in the past used it to link two cards) HD: The Z800 came with a WD 1TB spinning platter drive, but was replaced with two SSDs both Samsung EVO drives, then a NVMe PCIe card was added with a 1TB M.2 drive for games. All totaled I have a little less than $1k in the PC, it runs everything I throw at it, has plenty of capacity to run VMs, KVMs, running Fedora 30 and a combination of Wine, Lutris, Steam (Proton), and Play On Linux I can play all my games along with running most of the Windows software I need which isn't much these days..., lol BTW after a few tweaks I have a very stable GW2 install that averages 45-65 FPS on this old junk hardware...the core/thread utilization is way higher than I thought and while I don't see 100% core usage across both CPUs I do see way over 50% usage on all cores across both CPUs, while playing a game and watching YouTube at the same time, the primary CPU does hit 100% on some cores while the secondary CPU will balance out at 40-60% per core, it's interesting to watch as I never thought both CPUs would be utilized as much as they are. When the time comes to build a new PC this HP will find a new role as a headless media server or running our CCTV security system, heck maybe it'll do both! =)
  19. You might want to check out this thread https://en-forum.guildwars2.com/discussion/31192/playing-guild-wars-2-on-linux-performance-optimizations-and-more#latest While not about POP OS it is about running GW2 on Linux, today there are several ways to run GW2 on Linux successfully including adding to your Steam library (manually) and telling Steam to use Proton (wine variation cooked into Steam) to load the game, and it works but isn't in my opinion the best solution. I've been running GW2 on Fedora 30 for the last week or so using Lutris and a few tweaks from the thread above, it has worked very well for me enought so that I deleted my Windows install.... :astonished:
  20. Just a brief note ....Long time GW2 player (6 years) and long time Linux user although casually, I've always played GW2 in Windows first on 7 then on 10, never really had much issues other than the occasional graphics driver problem till I ran Win 10 which has been hit and miss as far as stability with each update MS pushes out. A couple years ago I wanted to switch totally to Linux and the distro of my choice was Fedora, at that time playing a Windows game on Linux was impossible for most, Wine was just getting started up, there was no Lutris, if you got a title to run on Wine at that point it was a big accomplishment but also a big disappointment performance-wise. So I did the next best thing and that was run Windows in a KVM with hardware pass through on top of Fedora, this was also a new-ish solution but one I mastered and ran for over a year playing Windows/GW2 just like it was on bare metal....but then...lol I got the bright idea to build a new system....blah blah. Without going into a lot of detail I decided to try wine/lutris on Fedora 30 to run GW2, it took a few tries to get it configured and all the dependencies figured out (most folks seem to do this on Ubuntu or some Debian variant). The last few days I've been able to play GW2 on this setup, frame rates are mostly 35-60 and the colors don't seem as vibrant but then again I'm using a Radeon 570 and not a new card from the green team..lol If I could get my Logitech G13 to work I'd be all set which is my current project, gaming on Linux is one thing but without peripheral support (which should be a easy task for the devs) it going to be more of a uphill battle, hardware manufactures like Logitech and Corsair Should be working on at the least minimal driver support for their products in Linux. Anyway just wanted to thank the OP and everyone who contributed to this thread it has been a big help to me. Thank You!
