If you were in charge of deciding whether the game had a cash shop or did not have a cash shop what would you choose?

I would put all the gemstore skins as a rare reward in hard dungeons or fractals, this would create a more motivated playerbase, meanwhile the actual endgame is sitting in divinity's reach showing skins, thrones and playing music....

And then the servers would go dark for lack of income.

There are more things than skins in the gemstore, for example inventory and character expansions, utility items, tools, instruments, keys...

What i mean is that paying for the coolest skins while dungeon/mementos skins suck dont motivate people to do things.

I think you would be more likely to see and increase of post like "I'm locked out of this" rather than motivating people to play said content.

Keep shop, removal of rare / super rare drop rates for skin items from black lion exclusive but put these limited items purchasable with no RNG during these X days / season.

Also do something similar to what DOTA 2 Workshop does having fan artist creating assets for a workshop submitting whether armors / weapons / outfits. It would be cool if we can keep adding stuff for sake of novelty collections / fashion wars but idk approval process making unique custom shaders nodes would be compatible for gw2.

Though I don't mind a cash-shop at all, I do have a problem with GW2's cash-shop. For example, most if not all relevant MMO's provide a free and reliable way to customize your appearance. Though the game provides you with a way to buy these items from the cash-shop by trading your gold for gems, it is just too expensive, pushing people to seriously consider spending real money.

I'd prefer a sub then GW2's cash-shop.

There are thousands of weapons and armor with which to customize your character in-game.  There are a few armors and weapons in the Gem Store.

There are Black Lion Weapons, as well, but there are ways to obtain Keys that don't involve cash.

There's certainly a way to customize your character, in-game, reliably, at no cost (other than Gold and/or Karma and/or Achievements).

Which games that have a sub fee, do not have a cash shop or micro transaction? I don't know any game that is based on regular payment for a period that doesn't also make use of cash shops.

I know this wasn't directed at me, but the nearest example I'm aware of is Elder Scrolls Online. That was their intended model at launch - mandatory subscription but with the promise that it would get you everything, all items, all new content, there would be no additional costs.

That lasted for 11 months (in which time they added 1 'DLC'), then they switched to an optional subscription and a cash shop and apparently it made the game much more successful. (I know they gained at least 1 new player as a direct result of that change.)

The optional subscription does give you access to the DLC and cash shop currency, so if you were willing to be patient and get the cash shop items gradually you could technically have stuck with the original model until May 2017 when they rebranded one of the quarterly DLC as a "chapter" and made it a paid expansion everyone had to buy seperately for the first year. When it's a year old a chapter is rebranded DLC and then available to subscribers, but that means you're a year later on a lot of the new content.

There's a bigger problem than that.  We've had threads where people want to able to view a character's gear so they can kick them from a party.  There's a current thread about wanting a DPS meter.  I haven't read it, but I'd almost bet they want to be able to track everyone's DPS, not just their own.  There's a reason a lot of that content is "empty" now, and it's got more to do with who's actually playing it, and how, than what does or doesn't drop.

If they could remove some items from the gem store, I’d much rather they remove the so-called “convenience” items, remove some of the arbitrary inconveniences built into the game to get us to purchase said items, and double down on selling the glowy, sparkly skins, most of which I don’t find attractive at all.

That way people who want to look like Las Vegas in humanoid form riding a Pink Floyd laser light show can keep funding the game and I won’t have to keep storing stacks of refined mats in my guild bank for lack of actual mat space.

I love the gem store because other people pay to support the game for me.  I bought some shared inventory slots, and 2 bank tabs.  Nothing else in the shop is of any interest to me.  I do not use the skins that drop in the game - I certainly am not buying any.  I paid for the Deluxe expansion for PoF. It included 4,000 gems.  I just bought the Deluxe EoD, and got another 4,000. I still 1,000 from the PoF release.

It is all convenience items, and shiny junk.  Seems to work fine as it is. 😎

Just so there's no confusion on which editions provide what, I think you mean you purchased the Ultimate Editions that include Gems, not the Deluxe Editions.

I would give the game a good ol' dose of them socialisms.

Instead just having a cash shop where individuals pay for individual stuff they only have, there would be NPCs collecting gems for 'projects'.

Once a project is completed, those who pay get perks, and everyone gets to enjoy the project regardless of whether they paid or not.

For example, with a weapon set, those who pay could get sent to their mail account-bound skin boxes so they can choose the skins they want from the set, based on how much they paid.
But the weapon set would be added as a rare tradable drop from certain enemies, letting everyone else earn them too.

I'd probably pick having a cash shop so that the game generates revenue, but i would certainly adjust either the overall cost of gems to be more friendly to customers or adjust the prices down to again, be more appealing to customers.  I looked at the shop last night, and was "nope, too greedy for me."

This sounds more like a complaint of the price of items in the gem shop, not the actual price of gems.

The cost of Gems has not changed in 9 years.  So, in essence, the cost of Gems has gone down with inflation.  Pretty generous and surprising.

Exactly so.

10$ for 800 gems, then have things cost 600 -2000.  Seems rather steep to me on one side or the other.

So?  Spend $20 for gems.  That's a bit more than the average monthly subscription MMO, isn't it?  And you'd only need to do that once, not every month.  Seems like a far better deal.
