Playing Guild Wars 2 on Linux - Performance optimizations and more.

Recommended Posts

I got it to work by installing wine_gw2_1.6.3_nvidia.tar.xz and _not_ copying bink2w64.dll GW2.exe from the old prefix when I copied data/drive_c/GW2/. I've seen one weird graphics glitch and it seems to have jerky moments that are getting fewer, performance with settings cranked up high is 40fps for me.

Edit: I'm seeing some flickering of character textures in bright light.

From the DXVK issue mentioned earlier. But since you guys tried several combinations there must be something else causing this behavior.

Hello. It is i who made that comment.

Yes the new update requires shared resources (dx9 & dx11 talking together) which needs at least dxvk 1.10.1.
It also needs to be paired with some some wine commits that go along with that work. These have been in proton experimental for some months now. wine-ge and proton-ge should also work afaik (latest versions atleast) and also lutris-7.2-2.
For any bottles users i'm not sure any of their custom wine's include them. At least soda didn't seem to and i'm unable to test caffe as it memory leaks so my system crashes (non flatpak version)

Edit: Actually soda does include it. My bad

Setup:

OS: Manjaro (all updates)

Kernel: 5.15.55-1-MANJARO

GPU: GTX960

Driver: nvidia-470.129.06-1

Installed GW2 via: Lutris

Currently DXVK breaks the whole thing.

Disabling it and forcing dx9 (via -dx9 ) allows the game to "run". Performance is definitely lacking tho.

With DXVK no wine version (default lutris-fshack-7.2.-x86_64 tried GE-proton-7-20 and 7-21 as well) works.

Every one of them crashes even before the login screen. (always: "Assertion: Coherent GPU process crashed
File: D:\Perforce\Live\NAEU\v2\Code\Arena\Engine\ArenaWeb\CoherentUi\AwCohContext.cpp(375)" )

Different DXVK versions also don't seem to matter.

So not just AMDs (my nvidia is ooold tho).

A addon to my post is that i did have issues with the launcher crashing sometimes while i was switching between versions. But i'm not sure what that issue was as when it started working it didn't crash again (with the above mentioned wine versions). Dunno if it didn't like me switching between wine versions so much

That's a nice in theory but no. wine-ge 7.21 (two days old release) with DXVK 1.10.2 (a week old) crashes instantly on launcher start.

Have you tried proton or proton-ge? wine-ge is a different entity. Also, what video card and drivers are you using?

Like others I've tried every combination in this thread to no avail.

I think players are confusing three separate issues I've identified so far:

- The shared resource crash, which is from having a Wine or DXVK that's too old.  Easily solvable by using a Wine version greater than 7.2(-2?) and a DXVK version greater than 1.10.1.

- The generic launcher crash, caused by using Lutris with a non-fshack version. Potentially fixed by using fshack or a virtual desktop. Might occur on other builds?

- The as of yet, unknown crash that occurs on any Wine/DXVK/etc combination (all the ones listed in this thread included) and both on NVIDIA and AMD. You can sometimes run the game by using DX9 and turning off DXVK, but that's all. Sometimes it works a bit with dxvk-async. This crash is in GPU memory.

All of these are related to CoherintUI, however none of them are the same problem.

I thought the random nature of the crashes and different configurations not working for some people was because of possible memory corruption, but its likely because there's multiple genuine crashes getting confused for a single problem. Basically its not broken in one way but in multiple ways and each needs its own fix.

Had a working setup with wine-staging-6.16 and dxvk-1.10.1. However, with the latest patch, the game crashes on login screen. I see this in the console window when this happens:

Quote

031c:fixme:vulkan:X11DRV_vkCreateWin32SurfaceKHR Application requires child window rendering, which is not implemented yet!

Not sure if this is what's causing the crash with CoherentUI, but maybe something along the lines of CoherentUI change causing the Vulkan translation in dxvk to use an unimplemented rendering feature in wine. CoherentUI didn't like that it failed and crashes, maybe? I found a reference to this wine bug but can't try the patch at the moment: https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45277

Without dxvk, I was able to log in and play. It's not using the dxvk vulkan translation, so it doesn't require child window rendering. Obviously performance took a nosedive without dxvk.

Edit: Looks like a patch to implement child window rendering was included in wine-ge-custom. So that probably addresses one of the issues...

The same here and I am getting the same outcome if I use Lutris or Wine. Have not tried Proton changes yet.

For what it's worth, with Wine-Staging 7.13 I'm able to play the game in DX11 mode, without DXVK. There is some performance hit, and my CPU runs on a higher load, but it's absolutely playable.

Some quick system info: Arch Linux, Ryzen 3700X, Radeon RX 5700, Linux 5.18.2, Mesa 22.1.3, Wine-Staging 7.13

With DXVK I'm seeing the following crash:

If you want use vulkan game cant run with simple wine. Only with Valve's proton. I recomend you protproton https://portwine-linux.ru/port-proton-linux/ .

For those who use Lutris, this is the proton to use: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom

Edit: followup, I tried the ge-proton7-22 released half an hour ago, still same crash

I tried to launch the game manually using that version of wine, I get a plethora of "cannot allocate memory" errors.

I finally bit the bullet and installed lutris and its dependencies instead of running my system wine natively. I used the lutris install script from lutris.net, interrupted the install and in the wine prefix, symlinked my already installed and fully patched GW2 (I dual-booted into Windows briefly to run raids). Things seem to be working well so far...Even trading post and guild panel seems to work...

Lutris: lutris-0.5.10.1

Wine Version: lutris-GE-Proton7-1-x86_64

Video drivers: nvidia-drivers-510.73.05-r1

Using DX11

I have problems too on lutris (can't even install the game on launcher now)...tried everything possible I can think of (enabling/disabling DXVK,changing wine version, installing the game manually instead of the online install, changing DXVK version) and none work

CPU:AMD Ryzen 5 3400G

GPU:APU Radeon Vega 11

Kernel: 5.18.12-zen1-1-zen

Distro: Arch Linux

I also tried GE's new wine version...it won't do anything on lutris

Wine versions tried on lutris:lutris-GE-Proton7-22,lutris-GE-Proton7-21,lutris-GE-Proton7-20,lutris-GE-Proton7-16,lutris-GE-Proton7-1

My fix is just to play it as a non-Steam game with Proton ver: GE-Proton 7-25

Guess I'll have to wait on my end for Lutris and just play on Steam as non-Steam game

I have the same issue.  I was playing fine when the patch dropped.  The update applied normally, but I was unable to start the game after that, getting the "Coherent GPU process" message instead.  I tried running through Lutris, and also by running directly against my native wine version, both failed the same way and both had been working up until the patch.

I did get a crash like this ("coherent GPU process" missing or something) today.

[PARTIALLY SOLVED]

I managed to have the game start, graphics is not very good and FPS is bad, but at least it doesn't crash anymore (Coherent GPU process crashed, memory allocation errors).

Linux MX - debian 11, NVIDIA GK110 - gtx titan, driver 470.129.06, kernel 5.10.0-16-amd64, wine dependencies: staging 7.13

What I've done (using Lutris folders):

1) download freshly released wine-GE-proton7-22 (Lutris version) from here: https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/wine-ge-custom/releases/tag/GE-Proton7-22

2) unpack proton wine into ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/

3) download DXVK 1.10.2 from here: https://github.com/doitsujin/dxvk/releases

4) unpack DXVK where you want, open a terminal into it and use the following command:

WINEPREFIX=/path/to/lutris/gw2/prefix ./setup_dxvk.sh install --with-d3d10

5) go to ~/.local/share/lutris/runners/wine/lutris-GE-Proton7-22-x86_64/bin, open a terminal into it:

WINEPREFIX=/path/to/lutris/gw2/prefix ./wine "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2-64.exe"

(change windows path according to where you installed gw2)

Using Lutris to launch the game after these updates still crash it, using Steam client still doesn't work for me.

I have problems too on lutris (can't even install the game on launcher now)...tried everything possible I can think of (enabling/disabling DXVK,changing wine version, installing the game manually instead of the online install, changing DXVK version) and none work

I'm running Manjaro (Arch derivative) and was getting the same "Browser Crashed" error with a Lutris install.

I was already using DXVK v1.10.2 and NVidia 515.57 -- but switching to lutris-fshack-7.2-x86_64 made it work for me.

Important: reboot after switching to the new version of Wine. When I switched back to lutris-GE-proton7-1-x86_64 to get the error name, going back to fshack version didn't work until I rebooted. (Initial change to fshack 7.2 was part of a big update release on Manjaro, so it had a reboot.)

Only problem I've seen is that in some scenes with strong light sources (like campfires or large torches) the brightness / darkness jumps a lot depending on how occluded the light source is -- it wasn't a problem with  GE Proton 7.1.

With Lutris i have tried a lot of combination of wine versions (7.2.2 and older), dxvk versions (1.10.2 and older) and some other options.

Majority of the time its a CoherentUi fail.

without dxvk I can sometimes clik play on the luncher, but for an immediate crash.

With steam (starting with the installer) i have a windows

"Updating Gw2Setup-64.exe

Ready to launch

#SteamUI_JoinDialog_LaunchGameReady

VIEW UPDATES button"

How do i make steam work?

"Manjaro Linux" (64 bit)

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core

AMD AMD Radeon RX 580 Series (polaris10, LLVM 14.0.6, DRM 3.42, 5.15.55-1-MANJARO)

I had to untick "Enable Steam Play for all other titles" under Settings -> Steam Play. Otherwise the forced Proton version for GW2 would not work, and I get the same pop-up window as you do.

Got some lighting problems, where the environment lighting turns off and on at certain camera angles. These weren't present in ArmoredVehicle's builds.

Confirmed with one guild member that this doesn't happen on Windows.

Also, the TP begins to stutter quite heavily after playing for a while 🤔

This Coherent UI update sure is a pain. So bringing the builds up to a working condition does seem to come with some regressions.

Looks like others are having the lighting issue too -- it appears to be general, not Linux/Wine specific.
