Omg i was so excited about a Steam release and then 5 seconds later i realized this trash. Seriously. Look at SWTOR that just did the same transition. All to the BENEFIT of both developers and the players..

This effectively makes me want to play LESS since i want to play through Steam and i eventually have to start over..

Why would you want to play through steam? What's the difference?

I mean you're going to be launching the same game (probably with the same launcher) as you are now but by clicking on an icon on steam.

I don't get it either. I know Steam has it's own friends list so I guess it makes it a bit easier to add people you know in real life or from other games, but I don't see why it would be so important to some people to go through a 3rd party to launch the same game they've already got.

Yeah, ArenaNet may not have filled out the page fully yet but from looking at the Steam store page I don't think they plan on integrating with Steam's own systems (no mention of steam cards, achievements etc) so I doubt they'd even tie into the Steam friends list.

ArenaNet's purpose with this is doubtlessly to get the game in front of new players on Steam. Why they'd tell us existing, established players to wishlist it on Steam is beyond me. I'm sure as heck not going to buy the game a second time and start again.

But why? whats the point? I was thinking about going back into GW2 world, and maybe get some of my friends to play, but there is no reason for me to do that? I cant get steam achivements, cards, and play time.

You really think they will release steam achiv and trading cards?

Is there a limit of foolishness from ANet side? Cant you act like a normal company, like kakao games which moved to steam with BDO and allowed ppl to log-in through steam? No? I ask for too much?

AFAIK the limitation comes from Steam.

I believe it's something to do with how they handle Expansions as DLC which requires the base game in order to purchase. Meaning it would cause issues if someone who already had GW2 tried to purchase an expansion through Steam, as Steam would prompt them to re-purchase the base game (Or more accurately would propt purchase of HoT/PoF)

As well as them trying to authorize game keys for expansions (As they'd only be able to authorise the keys they have available, not the ones that are owned by the ANet store)

It's a similar thing for FFXIV, which also has this limitation on not being able to convert to and from Steam and non-Steam versions.

    @keenedge.9675 said:
Why are people so insistent on getting a Steam login for Gw2. One click is too easy ?

I know right... Meanwhile, basically everyone who's using the Steam version of FFXIV is asking for the opportunity to swap to non-Steam versions...

Due to the plethora of issues that Steam versions encounter, such as the always online requirement on Steam itself, the Steam launcher breaking preventing access to the game (Especially after implementing a requirement to launch from Steam, where you cannot bypass it by just using the .exe in the files), having a double layer of launchers as Steam implements its own launcher before sending you to the games own launcher, the need to purchase everything through Steam (So you don't benefit from new expansions going on sale as Steam doesn't put them on sale until much later)

All for the benefit of... Being able to use Steam Wallet to purchase MTX...

Lots of reasons, especially the community ones like creating arts, community sharing and integrations, screenshots, not to mention the obvious ones like possibly hours, friends lists etc. I mean, come on, there are obvius benefits of having it all in one place like Steam. Stop ignoring the obvious, thanks.

Because people got kitten loads of money on Steam through stuff like CS:GO boxes and they would be willing to spend that on GW2, at least that's my reason.

Personally, I would buy the next expansion if I'm allowed to move to steam my old account. Please let me buy the expansion for my old account via steam, else Iit would be impossible for me to buy the game due to recent law that forbids buying USD or buying by paying USD dollars. I have all content in my old account and I will not start again, seriously there is no way I renounce to my 27k anet points account.

What country have a law that bans useing another countrys currency?

Hopefully the posts about Guild Wars 2 coming on Steam will stop now.
Excellent idea to bring the game to Steam, hopefully we'll get many new players.

yes. all those people who kept predicting the doom of GW2 if it came to steam should stop now. i really appreciate Anet's move to bring GW2 to steam. i mean GW1 is on steam so why not GW2?

and of course, like SWTOR, i hope we get more players and hopefully in the long run it's a boon to Anet and the whole community

Watch people use "low player numbers!!" on steamcharts as a metric for the death of the game, not understanding that would only include steam only accounts :P

tbh i get why they separated Steam and Non-Steam accounts.. they might've encountered issues making steam integration (wallet purchases for the most part) work if you convert the current accounts.

but i wish they'd reconsider and allow us to link (not convert) our original accounts to steam

and yeah steamcharts/steamdb will never know who's playing outside of steam :P

The problem is, you could just do it like this.

Make the game F2P on Steam, then when you buy a DLC, it gives you a Code that you plug into your Anet account. Then you aren't locked into one launcher.

Yeah, but SW:ToR literally just uses the client they have been using for AGES for Steam. On top of that they use a BETTER version of their launcher that doesn't have their "BitRaider" tech that allows the streaming kitten to work (The ability to play the game before it is fully downloaded). That version of the launcher doesn't fail a billion times per day.

  • We need Chinese, whether it’s simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese. Chinese players have a huge group on steam.

I know there might be contractual and business reasons why you want accounts/users to be ANet acquired vs Steam acquired and may want to restrict payment/wallet options depending on the user/account creation method. But could you still look into linking accounts to provide single sign on/friends list integration, and allow all clients to be account source agnostic while still maintaining payment separation?

Also you should double check your store listing data to make sure the developer and publisher id's are consistent between GW2 and the original Guild Wars listing on Steam...

If it's possible, I would suggest making a way for existing accounts to be able to play through the steam version of the GW2 game client also. Not necessarily making gem purchases available through steam, but at least allowing existing players to be able to play through it if they choose to. If it's not possible, a simple explanation might make it easier for existing players to understand, since most MMOs I have played on steam allow existing players to be able to play through the steam version of the game client also. The only MMO that I have played that doesn't allow this option on steam is FFXIV.

  • The Chinese agent named KZW performed very badly. 1 million players left Guild Wars 2 because of KZW. If Guild Wars 2 comes to steam and has Chinese, whether it’s simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese, our 1 million players will return to Guild Wars 2 and buy Guild Wars 2: End of Dragons Teaser dlc

If you log in through Steam, you'll still play alongside your fellow Tyrians on the same maps and servers (select NA or EU). Whether you choose to log in through Steam or the Guild Wars 2 launcher, everyone plays together! However, please note that you cannot convert an existing Guild Wars 2 account to a Steam account or convert a Steam account to a non-Steam account.

Hi, just to clarify. If we have an existing gw2 account with characters and we buy it all again on steam - can i still play with my existing characters on steam or is it a completely fresh account with none of my old characters. The statement you made was not entirely clear for me - sorry

  • You should have listed it on Steam 8 years ago, I thought this game is new when I first played it in 2018, I absolutely HAD zero information about GW2's existence.

Now I am envy of people with 8th anniversary gifts.

    yeah

oh and just saying: you know what, GW2 going to steam and players not being able to convert non-steam to steam accounts wouldn't have been an issue if it was done waaay way earlier like back in 2013 or 2014 (GW2 2012 launch)

in FF14's case (since it's always brought up) for example, about it having totally separate steam and pc accounts (yeah you can't login if it's another account type nor can you purchase expansions, etc. steam to non-steam) it wasnt so bad in that case because they released it for steam about a year after the initial re-launch (realm reborn august 2013) > (steam launch february 2014)

in GW2's case it's an 8 year gap so starting over fresh, that's a lot of difference vs. a couple of months: character birthdays, lws1, seasonal/anniversary stuff that are unobtainable, 40k + + AP, legendaries (if you made any), etc. etc. --- that's just a lot to work for again with some being near/actually impossible to.

there is a reason why people who prefer steam's payment gateways are not happy about not being able to transfer over. for some of them, there's just so much work and time over the years to lose vs. being able to properly and reliably support (if they so choose to) ArenaNet by buying expansions/microtransactions with their local currency.

I can simply login through launcher, doesn't it? Or if i choose "play on steam" i lose my 8 years progres? I'm not happy about this. Can we pay with steam wallet?
And maybe some steam cards with profile wallpapers, etc will be nice.

    Make dreams come true.

  • Okay, I am very thankful for this as I am a huge fan of Steam, but does it really mean that I won't be able to transfer my existing account to Steam? Feels really weird that I couldn't do that, knowing that many MMO's like Elder Scrolls Online and Star Wars The Old Republic has a simple linking system.

  • If you will allow us to use our existing users, I swear I will purchase the most expensive expansion edition and the biggest Gem package!!! Gotta barter somehow ;D

There is one thing that worries me about the game releasing on Steam. Since it will be on November, I'm not sure if the Icebrood Saga will be over by then, but I hope it will as releasing to a brand new audience -mid season- is an absolutely terrible idea. Think like a TV network getting a new show and start airing from episode 10 of Season 3, it would only cause confusion. I know they can't start from scratch since S1 isn't available. I hope they planned this well and the Steam version will start with a brand new story.

  • it's cool but i hope we can connect our Existing GW2 account to Steam :'(

  • I received this news with great happiness at the beginning, because for years my GW2 account is stopped, but without being able to play with it on steam it doesn't make any difference to me.

It is a pity that you cannot convert your non-steam account to steam, as this would motivate old players to return to the game, as there is a new expansion on the way.

I know I will have access to the expansion by downloading the client normally, but the point is not that, I don't understand why they prevent this and for me this is more of an obstacle because I like to keep everything in one place (Steam), so much so that my gw2 I open it for steam today, but it’s not official, which would be great if it were.

  • Please do something so that we can link our current Guild Wars 2 Account with Steam Account. Would love to be able to use what's left of my steam wallet to buy gems!!!!

I sincerely hope this is just a VERY STUPID joke! I'm among thoose that always hoped for a GW2 Steam release so we can pay what we want from the game using out Steam wallets (i'm from Brazil, 1USD goes for 5.55BRL today, making purchases on usd almost impossible for us). And when you finally anounce the game's arrival on steam you lock your players outsite? Its far better you never release the game on steam than doing so this stupid and disrespectful way! I'm totally offended with this news! I do hope ArenaNet realises how stupid this is and create a migration option, at least, with extreme urgency!

  • I don't understand why you want to have your account on Steam. For me it's just the opportunity to bring some new players

Steam Wallet makes a gigantic difference for many of us. Not to forget thoose who like steam functions and so.

Agreed....not allowing linking of old accounts to steam accounts is stupid. Other games do it...I bought ESO outside of steam and then bought the expansion bundle through steam...my account is just one account, using my old characters. Just make it work ANet...stop the garbage.

The special thing of gw2 was that it was NOT on steam.

  • Healix.5819Healix.5819 Member ✭✭✭✭

If people want to convert their account, why not? Just be like certain other MMOs and charge for it. They'll probably make more money if the Steam version has its own downsides, like no gem exchange, a different currency / higher prices, etc.

    @Giulianno.3107 said:
    Regional price

Note you'll still be paying the same prices, it'll just be displayed in your local currency. True regional pricing is something the developer has to specifically set.

  • Some level of Steam integration with non-Steam accounts would be nice, even if it is indirect. If a Steam GW2 player can't gift stuff via Steam to a non-Steam GW2 player, that could be a bit of a problem. How do I invite a friend to join GW2 via Steam, when they can't exchange Steam gifts with me or check my online status?

I honestly do not want to link my GW2 account to Steam, but I see the potential for a wall forming between the Steam and non-Steam GW2 community... and the non-Steam GW2 community getting the short end of the stick.

  • I've been waiting that for many years and now when it finally came I can't link my account to steam, no words can express how disappointed I am.
