That ship sailed so, so long ago.

Edit: I might have misread your comment, but still, my personal opinion is - it's tacky. I can't wait to fight through some life or death event with characters dressed for their holidays. Coming next, Bucket and Spade BLTC weapon skins.

We're already fighting demonic monsters in world-ending battles with charr dressed like Santa Claus, norns with giant orange mustaches and pink maid dresses, and some guy in a red-and-blue outfit named "Spydor-Man".   Tacky has been with us for a long time, it really started at launch when ANet decided to give us dye channels lol

If I remember correctly, some people have dressed up their characters as Ronald McDonald since launch.

Why not both?
That's great to see this outfit option finally available since the assets have been in game since Southsun.  I'm with the other people who are hoping the beach chairs will also be in the gem store.

These are not the Southsun NPC swimwear. They're completely new designs.

While I'm liking what I'm seeing so far, there is one small problem: The shoes.

It seems there's only one set of sandals in this, and that's a bit disappointing. It's SWIMWEAR, we should be able to go barefoot! Now would be the perfect time to introduce "invisible" shoes to the gemstore, and make them available only as part of the bundle for the swimwear.

If you're not going to do that, then can we please, PLEASE have a second version of the sandals, this time with socks on underneath them? If we must do it wrong, then let us be very wrong indeed.

This would also be the perfect time to introduce a toggle to hide shoes.

Indeed. Hope they will add some of the other casual beach wear we have seen in the game. 😉

This would devaluate the invisible boots drop.

There's two pairs of sandals available already (for all armour weights): Raven Ceremonial Sandals (from IBS) and Sanctified Boots (from the Wizard's Vault).

For some races/professions there's other options. I've been using the Orchid 'boots' on my female sylvari for years as a substitue for invisible boots. The Tribal Walkers might work too for light armoured characters.

Bare feet never had any business being the literally rarest item in the first place. That should have been adressed that years ago.

These come with the white mold that can't be dyed. On pale characters this is less visible, but on characters with medium to dark skin, the mold sticks out like a sore thumb.

A lot of these are underwear, or underwear mixed with other pieces so we'd have them already if we could dye the underwear.

As a reminder here's what characters look like in their underwear: https://i.imgur.com/vZL8RC3.jpg
(Also the female sylvari common clothing outfit and an example of a female asura only wearing a top and no trousers, because those come up too.)

  • Both the female norn in your screenshots, and two of the male norn are wearing recoloured underwear.
  • The other two male norn, two male sylvari and all the male charr are wearing swimming trunks which have been in the game since at least 2013, which are different to the ones we're going to get.
  • The two female charr and all three female sylvari are wearing their race's underwear top with a skirt which as far as I know is unavailable to players.
  • The male humans are all wearing speedos which look almost identical to the ones we're getting (although one version has stripes and I don't know if the one's we're getting have any pattern).
  • The female humans are either wearing a swimsuit unavailable to players or what appears to be recoloured norn underwear.
  • One male sylvari is wearing a leaf skirt(?) which I don't think is available to players.
  • The three asura on the right look like they're wearing the shorts we are going to get, one with the female underwear top, one with an unavailable top and one with one of the old town clothes tops (which are now outfits and so can't be worn without trousers).
  • The asura on the left looks like she's wearing underwear with a different pattern.
  • The asura 2nd and 3rd from the left are wearing shorts I don't recognise, I'm not sure if they're available or not.

So to give us all these options they'd only need to add the ability to dye underwear and 5 items:

  • The shorts worn by male sylvari, norn and charr,
  • The skirt worn by male and female sylvari,
  • The skirt worn by female charr,
  • The swimsuit worn by female humans,
  • The top worn by male asura,
  • The shorts worn by male asura.

Maybe they could even combine some. I'd actually prefer swimsuits as an outfit because it's something I'd want to switch into (and out of) as and when I'm somewhere it'd be appropriate rather than having to click through to change and dye each item individually. I also think some of these are fairly race specific and personally I like outfits which change based on race (like the common clothing and the chef outfits) because it allows Anet to do things very specific to each race. So maybe they could make a swimsuit outfit in addition to the armour skins we already know we're getting, which uses some of these to give each race their own swimwear based on their cultural styles.

You meant we have came out of the dark ages... finally.

I don't see oversexualization of characters, in-game or otherwise, as means to celebrate; the modest beachwear is fine, but the bulge-hugging speedos and hair-thin bikini is akin to selling (light) porn. I personally don't find that as something that should be celebrated, but hey, to each their own.

Do you think going to the beach in real life is akin to visiting a (light) porn show? Because you're very likely to see people wearing swimwear like that at the beach.

But importantly this doesn't really add anything new in that respect - we've had the option to have our characters running around in their underwear since day 1, and some armour skins and outfits don't cover much more.

I wouldn't say very likely; I don't, obviously, know what your experience might be, but in mine, it is very rare that I would see anyone wear anything this drastically thin on the beach/to a pool, and if so they would be looked at weird/sexualized.

The in-game underwear is actually less revealing than this. Yes, some armour skins are very revealing too, I agree---that only makes matters worse though, imo.

My point still stands. We can agree to disagree here.
