Shing Jea looks kinda bad??

Recommended Posts

Not to rain in anyones parade, the blogpost is overwhelmingly positive and the first ingame peak at eod in itself is a massive step in the right direction when it comes to marketing, however... what happened to Shing Jea?

It looks so vibrand and saturated compaired to gw1 that its kind of offputting and mostly just tiring to look at.

The greens are greener and the grays and whiter than the original coupled with the good old bloom and post processing goodness that seems to plague this game.

Hope this is just a unintented bad look at cantha's new colour palette and its not indicative of the rest much less indicative to a colour shift from gw1.

GW2 has always been really green, when it's not being a sandy desert.

I think gw2 has been moodier when it wanted to like with ds, frostbitten frontier, bjm etc.

Still i think the down to earth tone of the colours in gw1 did alot more for the region than the colours we saw from the image.

It did look lower quality to me as well. But someone mentioned they may have settings turned down for this particular image.

It may be that they're keeping ambient effects and higher detail out of the image so that the area feels fresh when we explore it.

Not sure what the complaints are about ... why does anyone think that's EXACTLY what they will see when it's rendered ingame with people standing in it? I mean, it's a picture of a landscape. You are literally assessing a concept illustration.

Are you talking about that pic in the blog? Really it looks clean not bad, if you mean the one at the bottom, thats a concept art.

Besides this is what that area looked like in the old game. Personally i will take the upgrade.

Considering the announcement said they're having to delay the expansion to next year it may just be that they haven't finished that area yet and the final textures, ambient effects etc. aren't in yet.

I've only seen it on my phone so I can't comment on details but the colours might be because it's unfinished, or it might be a deliberate choice by the person who took the screenshot. I see a lot of images of games players have "improved" with programs like ReShade where I think it just looks like they've totally messed up the contrast but they insist it's far better and the games defeault settings are so dull and washed out it's unplayable, so it seems a lot of people actually like that. If the person who picked this screenshot is one of them they might have gone out of their way to make it as bright and colourful as possible because they think it looks better.

I believe he means the picture at the bottom that shows the city with the jungle around it. That said, jungles tend to be green. And the area nearby zone is known as the Jade Sea. So....

Marked out the word 'area' because it apparently confused people.

I said, the area is known as The Jade Sea. Shing Jea is the largest island in the island chain.

1) XPac isn't released, all we have is a picture. Yet people find time to complain. Can we at least wait until it's released or until there has been a beta before we naysay the thing?

2) It's been 250+ years in the world of tyria. Things will have changed over time. It's natural.

3) If you want GW1 Cantha, feel free to play that game, servers are still running.

4) This is the problem with nostalgia and why I wouldn't have gone to Cantha if I were Anet. But alas, I'm not, so we will have to deal with "but this isn't like my memory from ten years ago"-threads once again.

Wasnt aware shing jea was under the jade sea umbrella. thought it only included the areas that turned to jade.

I like the more complex look of cantga and the expanded foliage its jsut the colour palette they used that i dislike.

No.  Shing Jea and the Jade Sea are two completely separate areas of Cantha.  Shing Jea is a large island off the north-western coast of Cantha, the Jade Sea is an inland sea that got turned to jade by Shiro Tagachi.

Shing Jea is entirely separate region from the Jade Sea - The Jade Sea is all the way on the main continent of Cantha, Shing Jea is a smaller island to the west of the main continent.

I can't believe we're now arguing semantics on a topic that criticized the art. I didn't say zone or country. I said area. Once again, area. Would it help if I said the immediate, surrounding, or nearby area is known as the Jade Sea? The point is 'jade' is green. The complaint is the picture shows too much green in a literal jungle zone.

My God, you people are the most nit-picking bunch.

And you're just incapable of admitting when you're wrong.  This isn't a nitpick, Shing Jea and the Jade Sea aren't the same Area.  They are separated by miles of natural sea, urban coast land, and the Echovald Forest.  The Jade Sea being green would have no bearing on a completely separate piece of land with a completely different appearence.  Also, Shing Jea didn't have jungles but rather had mostly farmlands, snow covered peaks, a few marches, and some light wooded areas.

But the Jade Sea is nowhere near Shing Jea. That's like saying Ascalon should be a jungle because its in (or near or surrounded by) the Maguuma, its not. Going from East to West there's the Jade Sea, then the Ecovald Forest, then the southern part of Kaineng City, then a Channel which is part of the Unending Ocean, then Shing Jea.

Its possible they have imported some jade from the sea to Shing Jea and used it for decoration or building (we saw some of this in GW1) but the landscape itself is not jade.

-- face palms as well --

As I said before, and you’ve admitted about yourself elsewhere: nit-pick.

Fine, it’s too green for a jungle area. Jade Sea or Shing Jea Island. Also, Maguuma Jungle is too green. Excuse me. The Heart of Maguuma. Don’t want you arguing that either.

My apologies. Your inner nerd overpowered mine with your attention to detail and minutia. I shall endeavour to be more precise in order to please your exactitude.

Better?

No, it does not. As I wrote earlier on the official annoucement thread:

3. Shing Jea Island has always been very colorful [...] - so I don't know what you're talking about. :classic_huh:

P.S. Judging by the artwork, I think it will look absolutely gorgeous. 👍
