When can we get a playable Tengu Race? [Merged]

Real talk: the most realistic time to introduce playable Tengu isn't at the start of EoD, it's at the end of it. Let me explain.

Right now, we're at the finale of the commander's story. We're playing as the commander, Aurene's champion, with their friends and partners. It would be weird and almost impossible to introduce a playable Tengu now, as that Tengu would then effectively also be the commander, and somehow that needs to be explained, either by retroactively adding the Tengu to the Personal Story, LWS2, HoT, LWS3, PoF, LWS4, and the IBS. That would be weird from a storytelling perspective and a ton of work.

However, when EoD ends, the current story ends. The commander might retire as the commander, Aurene might die or move on, and our friends might too. A new story would begin, a story where the protagonist (our character, previously the commander) takes up a new role with new friends. THAT would be the perfect time to introduce a new race. The Tengu's Personal Story could then be crafted to lead up to THAT story, and Anet could use the Tengu to craft and overhauled the new player/leveling experience. I'd be all for it.

It's still possible to introduce the Tengu at the very beginning of the story. As far as I remember, the Dominion of Winds was established in Tyria during Zhaitan's Rising and was built in the area around Sanctum Cay as a haven for the Tengus that were forced out of Cantha after The Rising of Orr.

The Tengu's Personal Story could easily revolve around them wanting to explore the world and move away from the life of the Aerie to become an independent entity and possibly establish better communication between the Tengu and the rest of the Tyrian races. In this case, our position would be that of The Messenger (yeah, doesn't really roll off the tongue like Valiant, but it's one position I know in the game that allows a Tengu to be playable and still have meaning), similar to Kalidris Sparrowhawk, who was allowed to work outside the Aerie to request help from other races when they got attacked by the icebrood, but on the early stages, we obviously deal with Zhaitan. Tengus are very neutral to most conflict, instead focusing on self-preservation from what I could tell (aside from the Quetzal since they aren't part of the Dominion and they're a warrior clan who like to attack anyone), so establishing a story that revolves around them observing the other races on their conflict against Zhaitan and eventually the player Tengu joining them can still work.

Buuuuuut the issue is development time. That's a lot of effort to establish the Tengus as a playable race. Plus we also gotta consider ANet having to adjust every single armour asset in the game to fit the Tengu race. Attack animations and idle animations might have less development time since we already got a good chunk of those with NPC/Enemy Tengus, but they will still need to adjust how those animations would better flow for Profession skills. Plus we also gotta talk character customisation, I'm sure many have already noticed how often they reuse the same models for the Tengu, how they're gonna tackle character customisation to provide a truly unique Tengu is gonna be something they'll need to put a lot of effort into as well.

I could honestly see Tengu working if they gave EoD more time to cook in the oven but that's also taking into consideration real life pandemic causing time constraints.

I think people need to stop with all the posts “oh it’s too much work”, etc etc. if Anet were to add new races, it adds new revenue via gem store skin looks, etc. when the end game is all about customizing your character, things like this is essential. Plus everyone is basing this on the whole “personal story” blah blah blah. There are so many ways they could incorporate new races and they don’t necessarily have to tie it way back to the personal story. I mean look at GW1. When you did a new factions character or nightfall character, previous content was playable, but with the notation that the content took place in the past, indicating the current character didn’t necessarily live those events. They could absolutely do something similar if they implemented new races. Why don’t people want more customization options?

Not to be disrespectful to the Natives but there is a parallel to the unreleased Guild Wars Utopia which is basically New World/Aztec themed to the path of introducing the Tengu..

Watch the Native Powwows and you'll see them in their Avian Costume Dancing/Shuffling...

And all the prominent Natives being documented in Pictures have headsets that have sort of a Serpent long band with Eagle Feathers..

As I've said, all the Tengu has to have is human attributes to be compatible with Human/Norns/Sylvaries/Asuras(Midgets) and an animal composite to be Compatible with the Charr (Feline with horned 4 legged bovine creature). Charr already has human attributes.

And Tengu/Snake is the perfect clue based on the Head Dress of the Natives..

EoD will introduce a race close to East Asians and the Tengu hook is like the Path to the New World..

The Lore of Luxons w/ Kurzicks will play a big part of this if we equate the Jade Sea to the Pacific Ocean..

i started a topic about it too yesterday and people seem to think that its not coming because its too much work. Well then what were they working on? on a few new maps, fishing and a new mount? its been foken 4 years since pof like god kitten they could have done an entire new game. Anyways we should be gratefull that they have shown us strong wamen again! oh, and the lesbians are coming back! yay!

There's a lot wrong with this post.

First of all, maps like HoT or Path of Fire take a lot longer to create than typical MMO maps. A lot longer. This has been discussed before by devs. It takes about six months to make and populate a single map. It's not just the details or the physical maps. It's the idea that you need many times more dynamic events on a map than you need quests, for games that are quest based. To illustrate this, Guild Wars 1 launched with 203 quests in Prophecies.  Guild Wars 2 launched with over 1500 dynamic events and 303 hearts. There were more hearts than there were quests in all of Guild Wars 1 at launch, and many times more events. In fact, in the totality of Guild Wars 1, through four games, the amount of quests never equalled the amount of dynamic events in Guild Wars 2 at launch.

On top of that, the multi-level complexity of a lot of these maps takes more time. Systems like masteries takes time.

But when people say that creating the Tengu would be more work, they're not just talking about the race themselves. Do you know what it's easy for something like ESO to have new races?  Because all the races have the same body and they snap on a different head, so all the outfits fit.  You don't have to introduce new armor.  But Guild Wars 2 is different.  Tengu would have almost no armor compared to other races. What happens to all the existing armor sets? Will they fit Tengu or do the have to be added.

It's new armor and new animations and new voice acting for every single living story episode since launch which is expensive as hell. People try to make this as a lazy or cheap thing. It's not. In business you need to justify costs. And when you put such a big item into the game, you're automatically not putting something else in the game. What gets left out.

It costs to much for what it gives. And yes, the other stuff in this game does take a long time to make and get done. Making a race would only make sense of a large majority of the player base wanted it. I"m pretty sure fishing would be easier to implement than a new race, and people ask for that too.

That's because Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall were independent entities compared to GW2 and its expansions. And by that I mean you can play Factions without base GW, same goes with Nightfall, can be played without base game when they initially launched it. Only at the time of EoTN was it necessary to have base GW because it was literally expanding the base game. So in this case scenario, it was fine to open a new character based on whichever game you started with and are welcome to play the previous games with your already existing character at your own leisure.

GW2 can start to add the Tengu race at any given point in time, possibly after the events of IBS, the issue is that ANet would still need to make a Personal Story to make the Race properly integrated into the story, regardless of where in time they start. If they started the Tengu after IBS, they would either need to make the Tengu Race lvl 80 at the point of creation (which is something they did for PvP characters in GW1) or they would need to create an entirely new Low Lvl area dedicated solely to the Tengu in Cantha which is still going to cost them time, resource and effort to make no matter what happens. Establishing their Personal Story at the same time as the other races simply means they can work on what's already an established domain for Tengus in Tyria (Dominion of Winds) without needing to force feed the Tengu into Cantha, allowing Cantha to follow suit with the other expansions as being mostly a Lvl 80 area.

And yes, the argument of time, effort, resource and development is extremely valid in any scenario because those are literally the fundamentals in building any kind of  videogames to begin with. Without any of those, how do you propose they make this videogame or its expansions? With the power of the Five Gods and some magic? Please let us know if there's ANY other way to develop a videogame...

^ as one poster here says, there is an area closed (somewhere in the sylvari/asura low level area or around that area) in the Vanilla Guild Wars 2 world guarded by Tengus. They don't need to hop to Cantha and start there. That low level area could be opened and a little programming, the Tengu/someformofTengu can start in that area, along with the 5 existing classes/races. that means tengu/someformoftengu still starts in the Vanilla Guild Wars 2 world, making them coequal with the Humans/Charr/Asuras/Sylvaries/Norns..

and you know the 6 Gods GW2 lore right? Humans/Charr/Asuras/Sylvaries/Norns/Tengus?

and Dwayna, the Goddess adorned with wings or feathers?

and Tengus?

Charrs to Balthazar (Fire and Charred mean burnt)

Sylvaris to Melandru (Nature peoples)

Asuras to Lyssa  (Inventors/Thinkers)

Norns to Grenth (Grenth, the God of Death and Ice -> Norns = Snow Peoples)

Humans (if not Kormir or Abaddon, that's what we will know in the expansion, which could be Abaddon or a Snake God, being introduced by the Tengus).

or it could be Abaddon coz according to GW2 Wiki

Abaddon was one of the Six Gods, a fallen predecessor of Kormir. He was the God of Knowledge and Water

in the Scriptures, The Snake guarded the Tree of Knowledge (of Good and Evil).

And combine the Snake to Water..

And it will be the Hydra aka the Water Snake..

so Abaddon will be the likely and plausible God of the Humans.

and Kormir is a usurper..

And phrase associate the Hydra to the upcoming expansion..

Jade Sea (large body of water)..

So it's likely that the necessary adversary of the 6 races and feel the unified victory if subdued and defeated is Kormir and her worshippers...

And what was said about Kormir?

She asserted that she's the Goddess of Truth.

But she's a new Goddess and usurped against Abaddon.

And the hook with Kormir is that she, together with her worshippers, fooled most humans to ally with her..

But there are still humans who know and loyal to Abaddon. and the Tengu hook will tell the whole story and preluded by EoD..

yo, all falls down like dominoes from here..

With a little programming? We don't know if the map is even finished. The devs said it would not be possible since they were intended to be as a playable race, but was later scrapped due to some mayor issues.

Asura believes in the Eternal Alchemy.
Norn has their spirits (The Spirit of the Wilds) which they turn to for guidance.
Sylvari usually follow Ventari's teachings and their "Wyld Hunt", but they came from the Elder Dragon "Mordremoth".
Charr don't really believe in gods after Pyre Fierceshots rebellion against the Flame Legion back in EotN.
Humans believe in the six gods (now 5)

The last bit makes me kinda confused. O_o

yes.. with a little programming..

referring to the starting point.

all the 5 races start in instanced area in Tyria. the instance is even small. and after that, you're out to the lowest level map..

in Tyria.

following through, the starting point for tengu should still be instanced and it should be in Tyria. after finishing that, tengus are out from that instance and appear in a map in Tyria.

i was referring to the point of origin of Tengu. Tengu story journal is different from the instanced area after creating your characters..

and the story journal of the Tengu will update the other story journals of other races, which ends in Orr..

so new content right?

who does not want new content?

and also i got time to address your parallelisms on races specialty and their appropriate Gods..

Asura = Eternal Alchemy = Lots of Secrets/Formulas/Encryption = Specialty of the Mesmer Goddess Lyssa

Norns are about Wild Hunts and Spirits aka Death and Spirits. Look at their Areas/Temples in the Snow. Lots of Taxidermi-ed Animals. Sure, Grenth is Fitting..

Sylvaries = Plant Peoples. Melandru = Everything about nature and taking care of life. Plants sustain Life for other creatures. Sylvaries are indoctrinated to take care of Nature. And the Avatar of Melandru looks like an metaanthromorphic Wooden creature..

Charr = Searers, Fire Creatures. There's a metaevent somewhere in Diessa's Plateau or in the higher map than that where they summon a Fire Structure to channel some kind of Magic = Balthazar. Remember how even GW1 started..

Tengu = Birds. Dwayna = Wings/Feathers ~> Birds.

now we're Left with Humans.. It should be Abaddon. Coz in the Scripture, when God sent Humans outside Paradise, He sent the Serpent with them. Esoteric implication = to guide them??? Likely..

And what is the implication of shedding the skin of snakes? changing clothes? Clothing? coz when the Humans in paradise told what the Snake wanted them to do, they made clothes (out of leaves, as it was written)...

Esoteric interpretation = humans were taught by the Snake about clothing before they went out of paradise..

and speaking of the Tengu extending the story journals of the 5 races, they can put instances in HoT maps and PoF maps to the new Canthan Maps and possibly to the newer future maps.. and by this, it is also a $$ strategy. if they want to go through the extended story journals of the new 6 races, GW2 players should buy HoT/PoF. but this is still noncompulsory coz if they don't have HoT AND PoF, their story journal will just end in Orr.

And they can hop to Cantha from Orr/Tyria through other story paths (e.g. Ferry), skip the extended story journal (which will also lead to Cantha but with lots of things new to journal via HoT and PoF experiences) if they don't have HoT AND PoF.

and to Hype the extended story journal and make sure that they buy HoT and PoF, they'll get epic and exclusive items while they complete some tasks or a journal in that extended story journal..

I'm sorry, why do you even try to pair other races with human gods? What is the point of it? Especially since it seems you're trying to brute-force the connections?

Did you try to even look at the GW lore, or didn't you even bother? Because at this level of what you presented here you might as well try to make the connections by blindly throwing darts at the board.

Just some short interesting tidbits of knowledge to you:

Lyssa is not about secret knowledge, formulas, etc. Abaddon is.

Norn spirits are spirits of nature, not of death.

Searing had nothing to do with Balthazar. It was the work of (again) Abaddon. Not that Abaddon had anything to do with Charr - he just used them as one of the many means to attempt to escape his imprisonment. Just as he used Shiro, Khibron, or Varesh. Also, Abaddon's race are Margonites which aren't even on your list.

Dwayna is winged, but those are angelic wings, not avian ones. Interestingly enough, some depictions of Melandru show her with similar wings as well.

Also, i don't know if you are aware of it, but the Human Gods are (at least according to the GW2 version of the lore) alien to Tyria and have no connections whatsoever to any native Tyrian races. The only race they are tied to are Humans (whom they brought from somewhere else - most probably the same place they themselves came from), and Margonites (which are also of Human descent).

Edit: correction - there's one exception to that. Melandru is also (under the name of Mellaggan) the goddess of the Quaggan. Which, again, are not on your list.

Also, it might surprise you, but there are actually more human gods than those that you mentioned.

these Gods are the archetypes of the races. their Gods represent themselves towards their fellow races.

That's about it.

And the fact is that Kormir usurped against Abaddon and asserted herself as the God of Truth. Well, you'll fool a lot of people if you convince them that you know the truth, and that truth is only based on Usurping another God whom you deliberately defaulted as a False God just to take his place..

Abaddon is the God of Knowledge and crunched Knowledge will lead to Wisdom, which is in real life called Sofia which represents the Snake..

yo, like 6 races. 6 Gods. i emphasized the God archetype towards the races because those races are actually playable races (1 soon to be [if possible]).

No, that's not it, because you just completely made it up. Yes, this game is a work of fiction, but you are not its author (no player is, really). We're stuck interpreting the work ANet wrote, and there's really no room in the established game and lore to support your interpretation.

As @Astralporing.1957 told you, the human gods are alien to this planet, and all five of them are specifically associated with exclusively with humans (the one possible exception is the whole thing with Melandru/Mellaggan). We started with 6 but went down to 5 after killing Balthazar. Your insistence that there are 6 is purely based on your own flawed interpretation of gods representing each playable race.

Under what basis can you claim that  Kormir lied about Abaddon being a fallen god and as such an evil god?  By claiming this you imply that everything the player experienced during the Nighfall campaign didn't happen, every evil that Abaddon and his followers committed, how do you square that circle?  Also, what's with your insistence that Abaddon is a snake or whatever?  Nothing depicts him as such, especially his in-game model from Nightfall.

Your head-canon has virtually no basis in the game's existing lore and world-building, as others pointed out repeatedly.

Actually, there's not even 6 (or 5) at all. Remember, that Dhuum and Menzies are also gods. They may not be worshipped by humans, and may be imprisoned, but that does not make them not-gods. And if we're even talking about gods that are already dead., like Abaddon and Balthazar, we need to remember that there were at least two more - Balthazar and Menzies' father, and the god that preceded Abaddon.

Well, it's still a bit uncertain whether Menzies is an actual god, or even Balth's old man for that matter.  I understand that in the majority of polytheism, both irl and in fiction, this would be the case but GW seems to do things a little differently.

Menzies is a god, his main title was usually God/Lord of Destruction. The Shadow Army are basically Menzies version of the Eternals, although how they form is currently debateable (some claim it's shadow elementals, others say its people who worshipped Menzies who are cursed to fight Balthazar and his army in a never ending struggle). Same goes for their father, they essentially followed the God of War series' Cycle of Patricide for their god of war, which is something a lot of people don't notice when it comes to Balthazar killing his old man.

if i completely made it up, you would see different words other than "Lyssa", "Grenth", "Balthazar", etc.

if i completely made it up, I would associate Charrs as worshippers of Lyssa because Charrs are expert in building Golems and using alchemy to make out of this world stuffs.

But Charrs mainly uses fire, right?

If I completely made it up, you'll see that things won't connect..

But it connects right?

I would even posit that Dhuum is the 7th God made to punish and torture the Usurper Kormir, her worshippers and her mercenaries for eternity..

Did I completely make that up? See "Dhuum" in GW2 wiki..

Coz as the story goes, Grenth "usurped" Dhuum.

Also, Kormir usurped against Abaddon..

so that will place Kormir and Dhuum in the same level of punishment.

But Grenth assumed the dominion of Dhuum - "Death"

and Kormir completely discredited Abaddon by asserting that she is the Goddess of Truth..

Did I completely make this up? Coz in our tribe, this is called exegesis. or detailing the story..

or if you wanna relate this to real life, go read about the Vaddi di li Tempri in Sicily and fit the 7 Gods (with Dhuum & with Lyssa (Twin/Gemini) as Castor and Pollux)

or just look at the Calendar. 7th Day, Saturday belonging to Dhuum..

Coz what is Saturday? ruled by Saturn, a Titan, which according to the myths, eats his rebellious Children, Olympians..

So Saturdays aka 7th Day aka 7th Seat of the Gods ruled by Dhuum (original God = Titan) to punish Kormir, her worshippers and her mercenaries (Olympians = Usurpers) for eternity..

Seems like epic lore from here, guises..

The established lore of Balthazar killing his own father didn't fully come out till much later, I'm pretty sure it came in as a revelation in GW2, specifically when you read the Orrian History Scroll in Malchor's Leap. Any scriptures or writings of Balthazar before that never mentions him arriving in Tyria with the head of his father, only his sword.

As for Menzies, he is considered a full god. All activities of Menzies account for him being showcased as having equal power to that of the other fully fledged gods and even going as far as to ally himself with the two fallen gods Abaddon and Dhuum. Only one demigod has ever been recorded in Tyrian history and that's Grenth. Grenth's father was human (it's obvious at this point that ANet is directly pointing to Malchor being his father but they still keeping it "vague") and the only time he became a fully fledged god was after he overthrew Dhuum in order to take over the Underworld.

My own memory and reading doesn't concur so I'm going to have to agree to disagree for now.
