Upgradeable armor set coming soon?

At 6min 41s in it's asked next in s4 and he briefly speaks about upgradeable armor (7min 8s)

What does this even mean? Will legendary armor get this as well i'd assume. Or is it an armor set with several different skins that you work to achieve in a possible new map, such as luminous caraace armor from SW or like how we upgraded legendary armor? Well whatever it is it seems like an entertaining goalto work towards next.

Best not create too many expectations...
A lot of what he said was fluff for the press, and doesn't completely translate into the game experience.

Honestly, i'd rather they put their money where his mouth was and release a set of elite specs outside of an expansion, so that we don't have to wait as long for proper choice of builds.

  • Rarity upgrade perhaps? Like, the gear starts out as common and you do various things to upgrade it to the next rarity until it eventually upgrades to ascended?

  • Ayrilana.1396Ayrilana.1396 Member ✭✭✭✭

Probably a way to upgrade an armor to ascended similar to how they did the backpacks and the mount.

  • Randulf.7614Randulf.7614 Member ✭✭✭✭

I doubt it'd be a new gear tier. That would be a very bad thing to implement. Could be just something like the backpack collection but for armour where you keep doing more stuff until it is ascended

  • Perhaps it's just the ability to make the armour unfused/attuned like trinkets are? I.e. just adding another slot onto each armour piece. Time will tell.

Hell no. Gear tier & build diversity to it is what this game majorly needs. Kiiten your cosmetics.

I disagree; in a game SOLD as not having a gear treadmill, it shouldnt go back on that.
I do however want to see a trend of having gear upgradable from "white" to "ascended" or even legendary.

hopefully this upgradeed armors have moving parts like the legendary raid skins, feels like a waste to only use it on 3 skins then never again.

I agree with you, maybe this will be a way to get legendary pve armor without raids too: i HIGHLY doubt it..but i can dream of a way to get legendary armor outside of raids.

Well beside the obvious Questing or raiding or pvp'ing even WvW'ing for special item's such as gem's that you can lock in a piece of gear for more stat's & powers or even extra abilities. Gem's that you can upgrade as well by using crafting & such. You could also empower dease item's or gear with junk such as Bloodstone, Dragonite & so on to give that extra boost just like characters eating food. Boost would go away an hour after & you would have to empower it again & again. Boost would always work in percentage & trying to figure out the right formula to find the best combination for the max % is always the goal & would be an idea. Theocrafting between gear, item's & empowerment. Could be a solution to gear threadmill instead.

Only thing i dont like is the temporary nature. It would become mandatory if you wanted to do content like raids to have the best combo, and for those players like myself who dont always do things that reward those materials wed be SOL. If it was permanent id be okay with it.

The extra stats we already have in the form of infusions, and they are expensive already.

Your right. & that's on purpous. See buy locking in gem's for example onto a piece of gear would give you that..., let's say that extra 20% onto your stat's. & that would be lock in. Permanently. But you know by empowering that piece of gear with 100 bloodstone would give you an extra 3% for 1 hour. Woul'nt you just do it? No matter what? Just cuz your that 3% much more powerful? I know i would. I would maxout all the time. & try to figure out if there's a way to get that 3% up to 5% or even more. Would'nt you do it? & if you did found out, would you tell how you did it? I know i would'nt. Cuz i'm greedy.. XD

That's not how the game was designed so it's most likely going to start off at low level and be able to upgraded to either top tier, whether that's Ascended or not remains to be seen.

Yes...no...maybe...what do you want, can't you see I'm busy saving the world...AGAIN!

  • Mostly hoping it'll be like legendary armor from a base look (exp. envoy) to something more epic (refined/legendary look) as you upgrade it to possibly ascended and I really hope we'll have every stat to choose from rather than a handful of them as we see on things like specialization collection weps.

Upgrade-able armor set with more choices in terms of customization.

This could go anywhere. I think (or hope) that it's either an armor set which you upgrade from x to z (white to exotic or even ascended, maybe legendary) or maybe add multiple runes to an ascended set to function similar to legendary armor (but that is kind of pointless if the stats remain the same). It could also be something along the lines of pick and chose stats, which would be insane (unlikely since this would go against the stat system).

I doubt we are looking at a new gear tier (sorry to disappoint every one from WoW coming) since this would mess a lot with the entire gear and reward structure in the game.

Then again, Arenanet have been known to throw curve-balls in the past and surprise us with what they came up with. Let's just hope we get through the next few months good enough content wise. The shock of no new expansion (and no new elite specializations) next year is still with some players. Player retention will be a challenge to master with Living World Episodes.

I want to believe that customization means we can finally choose whether our medium armor has a trenchcoat chest piece or a short version. Like piecing things together to your own liking with more visual options (perhaps even select parts of one piece in more detail). :)

And this armor would do absolutely nothing for that. Your argument doesn't make any sense lol

I'm assuming it's armor like the bloodbound weapon set or whatever its called. Something that levels alongside you and/or you unlock different tiers of that armor as you go forward and level up crafting perhaps.

Yeah, like others, I reckon it's going to be a way of upgrading armour sets through collections (maybe unlocking recipes as part of the reward for completion of each tier), it could be stretched over the next three episodes (starting with Rare in episode 4, Exotic in episode 5 and ending Ascended in episode 6).

They might also add ranks of Elonian armour crafting masteries alongside the collections.

Given the increasing gap between the episodes I'm expecting quite a grind so I hope the skins are nice. (Please, please, please, no buttcape or sidecape on the medium, just a short, symmetrical, waist-length jacket).

I'd personally love if they ended up as PvE precursors but I imagine they'll save PvE legendary armour for an expansion.

  • lokh.2695lokh.2695 Member ✭✭✭✭

I doubt there will be a new tier of gear. What ANet means by upgradeable will most likely mean what they did with the Olmakhan bag for example. You do a few things, gather some mats and craft a rare armor. Then you do some more colections, spend some more mats, do some events maybe to upgrade it to exotic. Exotic will have a bit flashier skin. Then you'll grind some more events and even more mats to upgrade to ascended adding more flashyness and/or ornamentation. Maybe they'll go so far to add legendary armor at one point or let us craft different armor upgrades from exotic to ascended giving edditionad versions of the armor with different flavors of flashyness.

I think this will end the same way as with legendary armor from raids. ANet will realise 3 sets, one per weight. These skins will appeal to some and won't to others. The players who are happy will be happy, the players who aren't will whine on the interwebs on how Anet dares to put "something this ugly" into the game as endgame reward. Ppl will "riot" because of the cost, "I only play one hour per week, how am I supposed to get this reward, it's unfair, I want it NAOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".
I'm curious how this will go down and what we will get. I'm looking forward to it but I won't set myself up for dissapointment. I expect the worst and hope for the best here.

I will post this in any thread that's about the new instance: Don't expect it to be cheap. Don't expect it to be easy. Don't expect it to be fast. I think this will apply to the armor as well, not just the instance.

If you want X, and Y is needed to get get X, you also have to want Y if you really want X. If you don't want Y, you don't want X. It's easy.

I disagree about gear tier. I've been playing GW2 since beta because it doesn't have new gear tier and lvl cap after every expansion, I was sick of that in other MMOs. If we get new slots in our gear and new ways to alter stats/skills/traits, that's fine, as long as they stick with Ascended and Legendary stuff.

  • I dont understand how people cannot see that this Upgradable armor is like others that we’ve gotten before.

Example the Spearmarshal set from PoF, its going to have a basic version that lets you upgrade it to look more fancy! Its a great system and I’m looking forward to see more of this!

Yes because after 6 years with no vertical progression the playerbase is really low as a result right?

Also I didn’t know you represented the majority of players who don’t even visit the forums.

In my eyes people play WoW for mainly 2 simple things :

    • constant and regular updates with content due to the P2P model.

    • Balance between classes in all game modes and their viability has been a lot better compared to Vanilla/BC era, and galaxies away from GW2.

I'm hoping its cosmetic and not actually another gear tier. Unless its already integrated into ascended/legendary.

Hell no. Gear tier & build diversity to it is what this game majorly needs. Kiiten your cosmetics.

Obviously you’ve never been there since GW1... try WoW or the other MMOs left on the market. They have the build diversity and constant vertical progression you want so much.

Not Gw1, but WoW yes. & WoW is a gear mill no matter how they do it. It was bad & they scratch it for something else. But millions of players are still playing it cuz there's a goal to optimize you & your gear. The trick is to make it better & not a WoW gearmill type. & that's my point. There are ways to do it & only a minority such as you don't want it. The rest of the world do. & that's why there still playing WoW & not Gw2.

They are playing WoW over GW2 because starting over after years of progress in a game is painful to do(and wows been out for what? 13+ now? JFC i couldnt start playing another MMO unless WoW literally died) and all the money they spent on WoW. When i started playing GW2 i was upset because the previous 7 years of progress in GW1 was Gone with almost nothing to say for it.

Id also argue its not a minority in THIS game with the people it was marketed to, this game is marketed as being not like the rest of the mmos on the market, as not having a gear treadmill of any kind, and that last one is one of the reasons im still playing, and i Doubt you are a majority of people IN this game, that want it, especially those that the game is actually marketed to. To those that left because there was no gear-treadmill of any kind, well thats their fault for 100% not realizing that a game advertised as not having any sort of gear treadmill did just that, not have any kind of gear treadmill, as was advertised.

As for GW1, gw1 had NO gear treadmill. Once you got to level 20 and had level 20 armor that was it, it was all about appearance and minmaxing runes/inscriptions, and it worked well.

GW2 adding gear tiers wont bring players into the game, but it will drive players out, and games that break with their advertisement and kitten off both their loyal fan base and their most long lasting players, arent seen in a good light no matter how good they actually are, see No Mans Sky, and what happened with it breaking 90% of the promises it put out.

Ember Wandertooth(SB), Lucina Fallenflame(Weaver), Kianda Redpaw(Guardian), Kingslayer, Light in the Dark.

Actually you can find this technology in several other items like the ascended backpacks from Sirens Landing. But also on weapons like the Shining Blade as you can see here

I guess the whole Mark Y Golem Backpack (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Mark_Y_Golem) with all his animations wouldn't work without that technology.

Hopefully, this new armor will include a pair of pants/tights for female scholars. Ones without a skirt over them.
