Early Access!?

Recommended Posts

Some of the reviews from journalists mentioned they were playing a pre-release version on a closed server, with some Anet people present to show them around. They were using characters like our specialisation beta ones - automatically level 80 with the new elite specs equipped and a bunch of gear to choose from and I think they were limited to one or two of the expansion maps.

I think it was a one-off session for each person too. It sounds like they got a few hours at least, but once their time was up that was it, they couldn't just keep playing whenever.

As far as I know Anet haven't done early access since the games original launch and that was just a few days and open to everyone who pre-purchased it. That was probably done partially to ease the strain on the servers, so they didn't have quite as many people logging in at once.

Feels bad, I hate early access, even if it’s a tour and only that, why would we not get equal treatment? I like many pre-ordered EOD, why would we not get access to said tour? Not saying I would personally care, but I know many do.

If you didn't care you wouldn't feel bad.

As far as I know it was only for journalists and streamers, so it's part of the promotion of the game. They give those people early access so they can write reviews, which then gets more attention on the game and helps potential customers decide if they want to buy it or not. It's not like Anet just decided to let them play early as a favour or a gift, they did it as part of the marketing for the expansion.

Just seems to be another method of ANET's marketing - get the influencers to see it early and then make videos. I don't see a problem with that.

Only thing anti-consumer to me is the concept of pre-ordering a game. I don't do it for any other game, GW2 is no exception. I am also not a fan of the concept of pre-order bonuses. I really just wish pre-ordering as a concept didn't exist in this industry.

I feel bad, because I always feel bad, anti consumer practices in general make me feel bad on top of that. I not invested in GW2 enough to care about the tour in this particular case. It’s called a hypothetical that others can feel

Anet showed off the game to a bunch of people they knew would put up videos and articles to hype the game a few days before launch of the Expac.

Seems like a step in the right direction for a company that has historically struggled to market it's product in an effective non-cringe inducing manner.

Please explain how this is anti-consumer.

Dunno about this. ArenaNet have to get reviews out early to promote the game before launch date, because that's crucial for their sales. So let them have a "tour". It's not like it's going to affect the player base negatively, so why feel bad?

I am not sure how marketable GW2 is, the game is great and the combat is amazing. But watching it on screen is super boring. If you look at dark souls , it feels klunky, slow and super unfun just like watching  playing base ball.

If GW2 wants to grow as marketing, it needs much more high octane activities. Giving the players mastery that gives them eg: a modifier for your great sword that makes it 20X larger, Is a lot cooler visually.

one of the reason BDO did so well, was the above. GW2 yes I get the engine is old. But would do the game much better.

I very much disagree. I understand people like that over the top aesthetic common in Korean games, but there are those of us who don’t who appreciate there are options without it. GW2 has enough giant spatula swords and spiky, burning armor as it is. It doesn’t need to be pushed farther.

Just wanted to let you know that the early access wasn't permanent. They only got a tour of the new guild hall (capturing it, actually), that's hardly something of major importance. People didn't miss out on anything they can't experience themselves in two days. 🙂

I get what people are saying when they talk about marketing and generating buzz, but you're right; it's weird that there was only early access for content creators and press instead of a limited early access similar to the sort we got for HoT and for PoF (which would still generate buzz and material for content creators).

For those who don't recall, we got early access to the Silverwastes and later on were able to explore around Amnoon to give everyone a taste of what was coming before the expansions hit.

Compared to precedent, this does feel a little weird - but then, the entire EoD process has been weird too. On the bright side, it's coming literal days before the expansion so even though it's an odd deviation, I guess it doesn't really matter.

There was no early access, there was a PR tour for some journalists and content creators. There is nothing wrong with that. You can literally play the game in two days!
Your claim is ridiculous.

I think you are confusing Betas (BWE) with early access.  There was no early access for Heart of Thorns, and would not be The Silverwastes if there was, as The Silverwastes was released long before Heart of Thorns in Living World Season Two, and is considered part of Core Tyria open to anyone.  There was no early access for Path of Fire; we visited Amnoon in the BWEs.

that's why you don't work in marketing...This was just an event on a separate server to help build some hype. All they did was claim the guild hall and 1-2 Event chains
