New weapons without supporting traitline?

Recommended Posts

There's something which is bothering me for a while now.

In case you do not know: Each profession will get access to a new weapon soon. For example: Mesmer will get rifle and Ranger will get mace. Right now you already have access to the "core" weapons a profession can wield and also – with the Weaponmaster Training – the specialization weapons like torch on a Warrior or rifle on a Thief. Each weapon comes usually with a traitline for buffing the  efficiency of this very weapon. The already mentioned specialization weapons benefit from the associated elite specialization. Other weapons like the pistol of the Engineer benefits from core traitlines like Firearms.

Each profession will now get a new weapon (rifle for Mesmer and so on). But I heard nothing about a traitline which is associated or at least buffs this weapon a little. Or have I missed something?

u see supporting traitlines as a buff when in reality its a nerf for not taking a specific trait. so be careful what u wish for

I'm a bit curious as to what we'll see. It's kind of like how there are traits that utilize blast/leap/whirl finishers, things marked with tags such as "Explosion", etc. If these new weapons don't include enough synergy with traits, then it will be cause for concern. Likewise, not changing weapon specific traits to include these new weapons would also be a problem. Hoping that we get some information on these new weapons soon.

I'm not sure if this answers your question or not, from the blog post - Combat in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure
Once you’ve unlocked Weaponmaster Training in Guild Wars 2: Secrets of the Obscure, you’ll be able to use elite specialization weapons without the corresponding trait line equipped. This will be the case even if you haven’t trained an elite specialization. That means that even if you don’t own the other expansions, you’ll be able to mix and match weapons from the elite specializations associated with them. (You’ll still need to own the appropriate expansion and fully unlock each elite specialization to make use of its trait line—not to mention getting the signature weapon and armor piece!)

So, none of this will effect those who don't own the SotO expansion.

If you're new to GW2 & SotO is your first introduction to it, then in order to fully appreciate all of the weapons at your disposal, you will have to purchase one or more of the previous expansions, depending on which weapons you're interested in using. Otherwise the trait line associated with your weapon choice isn't activated.

I could be completely wrong, but that is how I interpret what has been said to date.

I do hope Elite specs arent dead and still in development just separated from new weapons, as long as we won't have like Untamed during 1st beta and only work on hammer.

Ever since the weapon specialization thing was mentioned, I've been wondering whether they're going to rework the specs themselves to take that into account. Weapon proficiency training for individual especs is now obsolete & redundant, but it's still the first (and most costly) thing to spend your points on in every espec.

They need to remove the "proficiency" item from the specs altogether and either redistribute the point-cost spread across the remaining skills & traits, or just delete it and be done.

Honestly they should just remove Weapon-Specific traits for things more focused on Condi/Strike/Support/Class&Spec-Mechanic oriented stuff. Especially for Minor Traits that we can't change like 'Specter's' which only effect Scepter and Weaponsets that provide stealth.

Things that effect weapon mechanics, like 'Deadly Aim' trait on Thief for example, become such wasted slots that hurt your build depending on what you're doing like swapping to melee weapon because enemy is projectile-immune or when ur only fighting a single enemy. It'd be better off being something that effected all Strike/Crit build weapons or all Ranged weapons in some way and making the mechanic changes like 'Pierce' baseline to the weapon itself.

What this exerpt means that you need to own relevant expansion to get access to elite specialisation traitline, but you don't have to own anything outside soto to get access to the weapon itself.

It's another indication what a boondoggle this "expansion" rebranded Living World storystep is.

I don't even know which frikken weapon they are giving out.

The Warrior Rifle is VERY different to the Thief-Elite.

It's all so tiresome.

Guardian: Pistol

which one?

any more cute links?

mine are cuter 🎠

New one not seen before. ( would be pretty funny if guardian got the Ricochet ability that was taken from thief tho)

Druid staff dont work like any staff before it right or can you say its a copy of mesmer, guardian, necromancer or elementalist?

To add to that is revenant staff a copy of any of the above or daredevil staff?

It might use some animations from other pistol/scepter users tho.

I suppose it depends on if the new weapons are strong enough that they don't need specializations.  Or if the new weapons have synergy with specific traits in several different specializations.

I mostly play staff on core mesmer.  Naturally I am using the chaos specialization. Looking at the traits only two are staff specific.  Chaotic transference and Chaotic potency.  Both are mutually exclusive.  One buffs a single staff skill while the other reduces cooldowns for all staff skills.

It isn't earth shattering.

Dragon Hunter is a specialization that introduced the longbow for Guardian. But none of the traits actually relate to the longbow. I don't know off-hand but I think it's that way for all elite specs and because of that it was a lot easier to make those weapons available across each profession. So in fact, this is nothing new.

I'm frankly tired of traits that boost specific weapons. I can't wait until they are all phased out for traits that are useful.

That's just stupid.

It was always a great way to assign weapon specific boosts to "their" trait line and a smart way to stream line balancing.

This coming "weapon carousel" ride will surely be a nightmare to balance and I expect hilariously broken builds,

which will ultimately end in COMPLETE DESTRUCTION of ALL current diverse class builds.

As they HAVE to "streamline" the coming self-inflicted chaos into a few manageable (&boring) builds and traits.

Ah OK, thnx.

I should've paid more attention to that beta test weekend, but felt like I had better things to do than beta test Anet's latest harebrained scheme.

Don't have a problem with reusing available effects, complete skills even.

That's just smart thinking and might speed up development.

But I'm very pessimistic this weapon carousel idea will end well.
