Zera.9435
I want to introduce all of you to my smokescale, Quad Shovel Face. He's super cool and adorable.https://imgur.com/a/rASROLq But I have to wonder, how does a smokescale eat? The shovels on the sides of his head stick out beyond his actual mouth. It is impossible for him to actually bite and take chunks of meat off prey. ArenaNet, can you guys provide any clarification on how smokescales haven't gone extinct due to seemingly not being able to eat anything?
Pifil.5193
How do they eat? Messily, of course, very messily. They first evolved their smoke cloud attacks to hide their embarrassment over their poor table manners. 2

I meant more along the lines of how they are able to actually put food in their mouths at all without having actual hands or opposable thumbs.
AgentMoore.9453
This is a great question, so I'm going to give it my best potential answers.Biological: It's very subtle on the model, but there's actually a seam that runs near the base of each 'shovel' segment, suggesting there might be a muscle group there that they might use to twitch the bone plates away from their faces when it's time for dinner, sort of like a mandible.Intellectual: Because they can't stuff their face into the side of a body, Smokescales only eat small creatures or limbs that are slim enough to leverage between their facial meathooks. Because of this, there are a bunch of Pact torsos littering the Heart of the Maguuma which is where Pocket Raptors get their turn once the the Smokescale has moved on.Horrible: They have a tongue half as long as their bodies with rows of hooked teeth that can be used to slice away and draw in pieces of prey.Nonsensical: Infinite Gathering Tools & Autoloot. They kill something, press [F] near the corpse, and either a floating axe or a flurry of axe-wielding Choya break the body down into manageable chunks depending on how much money the Smokescale chooses to spend on account luxuries. I'm more worried about how Arrowheads eat. Maybe they have a symbiotic thing going on with with the Rolling Devils; food in exchange for protection? 9

Lan Deathrider.5910
Smokescale would have a hinge allowing those outer mandibles to open. Arrowhead just shovels food in it's mouth.

That looks like the most sensible explanation. Elephants missed the opportunity and evolved a ridiculous trunk instead.
Funky.4861
They use their 'tusks' to chop their prey into chunks, then just gorge on the corpse like a pig at a trough, bloody chunks flying everywhere.
Ogwom.7940
Their prey/food accidently hops into their mouth when a smokescale casts their smoke cloud skill. Although sometimes depending on the induvial, it's voluntary...

Wintermute.5408
They feed on salty tears of the players in HoT. Since it's liquid, the shovels don't get in the way.

They must be starving by now. I better log in and die to one so it gets a good meal.
