With a scepter lol.

Given the usage of Kanabo in feudal Japan, a Samurai-esque theme with Sceptre as a one-handed bonk stick isn't that unrealistic.

At the very least it'd be no less realistic than the overly popular pop fiction Samurai with their swords (as opposed to Samurai having used mostly bows and polearms in reality).

I'd welcome a Sceptre skin that looks like a small Kanabo, even if it technically would fit better as a mace.

It's that 'fits better as a mace' that makes me think every 'bonk stick' speculation is copium for people who don't want magic thief.

Staff is different in that staves were a distinct historical weapon type with their own fighting style. While personally I think ArenaNet should have just made polearms, in lieu of that, staff is the option that already exists that represents a blunt two-handed weapon that's more fluid than hammer.

Scepters, on the other hand, DO have a superior alternative that performs the role of a blunt melee weapon. There's really no good reason for thief to go scepter when mace hasn't been used on the profession yet. At best you could say that scepter skins, on average, are less bulky and presumably lighter than most mace skins...but that could simply be a matter of making a few mace skins that do work and letting players choose for themselves. Just like there are some staff skins that are actually suitable for use as a melee weapon and many that are not.

Thief has always had a bit less magic than the GW1 assassin did. And if ArenaNet was ever to make a thief elite specialisation that does match the GW1 assassin in magical capabilities, a Canthan expansion is the time to do it.

We've got the melee martial artist assassin and the long-range sniper assassin. It's a good time for a magic shadow theater assassin.

Didn't get mace offhand already leaked a while ago?

The leak was obviously fake, the revealed elite specs have proven it.

But there is a datamine which showed the weapons for the remaining elite specs. This datamine correctly predicted the weapons for revenant (greatsword), elementalist (hammer) and warrior (pistol).

So it is safe to assume that this datamine is correct, which means the remaining classes will get the following as their weapons:

  • Thief - Scepter
  • Ranger - Hammer
  • Engineer - Mace

I'm thinking they are going the old Guild Wars 1 Ritualist route where thief gets weapon spells and spirits to use. Like the spirits can steal and our attacks can heal our allies or deal more damage.

In the back of my mind, the shikigami setup, summoning spirits, keeps coming to mind and will replace our steal function. Stealing from a long range with a phantom hand to then conjure other spirits. Every time we steal, we have the ability to create a unique spirit.

I'm just praying the scepter is offhand (please break that rule) versus main-hand for more playability.

Thieves with either a main hand scepter or an offhand mace....not sure which is worse....

Off-hand mace wouldn't be so bad honestly. It's more thief-ish. Daze people and steal. That's very thug like. I would be okay with that. I would really prefer off-hand scepter, but that's just me. I would even like it more if they held the scepter in reverse grip, but that will likely never happen.

I highly doubt that the spec will be related to ritualist, considering that ritu was specifically using mist magic in GW1 (like the revenant), something thief was never associated with.

It's more likely that they take some inspiration from the magical capabilities of the assassin and are digging deeper in the shadow magic theme of thief, just like how druid was digging into the nature magic theme of the ranger class.

I also think that the chance for Scepter to be an offhand weapon is almost zero. They never have broken the rule of in which hand weapons go, not even for these new specs which are supposed to break rules.

I would bet quite alot of gold on it being a mainhand Scepter. Hell, I would bet real money on it even.

Who’s to say we can’t use scepter/scepter 😋?

Isn't Of-Hand Sceptre, just a Focus anyway ? Also has anyone looked at the sceptre skins to see if some would look nice on Thief ? (Not like the Staves for Daredevil)

Well if it's going to be an edgy Oni Sorcerer then there's quite a handful: like Shadow Scepter, Mad Realm, Eye of Rodgort, Dark Matter (which is 100% perfect for the concept), Abyssal Fractal, Abaddon (our lord and savior who died for our sins) and Zhaitan's Reach.

I'll probably use Abaddon, our lord and savior who died for our sins, and already use it on my Necro~ but I will probably finish the legendary birb scepter by then and will work on it when it's officially announced so I can hurl bricks at people.

Hopefully it doesn't end up like my legendary Rifle though which I made in advance for Deadeye but never use it anymore because I ended up hating Deadeye and the Rifle weapon skills in all content and went back to Daredevil.

Offensive support would be nice. Condi boon most likely would fit , I don't think the heal archetype would fit.

Staff is a power weapon and so is rifle. I would like to see synergy with might+fury as on Thrill of the Crime or Fire for Effect (deadeye) and bleeding (Deadly Ambush) or poison (Potent Posison).
Currently we have 2 condi quickness (firebrand and later harbinger , whereas condi chrono is rarer outside raiding) and 2 primarily power quickness (scrapper, StM chrono as pQB is usually not as strong).
