He sounds remarkably like Matthew Mercer and its a niche problem to have but Matt sounds overly lile his npcs from critical role (also also lacls the snarkiness Dmaggio brought to the character). If we cant recast Dmaggio back could we at least get some insight on why he was discontiniued?

I noticed that Canach sounds a bit off...
Did the voice actor change for some reason, or might this be due to recording from home? Or are they back in the studio? I forgot.
He somehow sounds more like Matthew Mercer than John DiMaggio for some reason.
I thought the same. Had a 'Hang on isn't that Matt Mercer's Artagan voice?' moment.
Sometimes he sounded just like himself and other times he almost sounded like Logan to me. I really, really hope they didn’t recast him, he was such an amazing character! Well his character will be the same I suppose, but the delivery of lines won’t
I'd rather keep going.. wherever the wind takes us
He apparently lost his voice and his great personality.
This new Canach just is terrible.
Yes, the VA changed

You’re hearing right: Matthew Mercer is the new voice of Canach! We loved working with John DiMaggio, whose (b)iconic performance as Canach was urbane and hilarious, but scheduling conflicts meant he wasn’t able to continue. We’re grateful to John for helping to create an indelible fan favorite, and if anyone can take the baton from him it’s Matthew.

Zojja next?
A shame, but undertandable. Taking over a character defined by someone else isn't going to be an easy task and it didn't hit the right note this time (for me). Hopefully as the VA settles into the role, that issue will resolve itself

Matthew Mercer is a talented guy, but oh boy, what a challenge. Agreed, hopefully over time he can nail it.
I thought it was pretty good, but I'm already used to nearly all the voices being different this season.
I had a harder time with Snarl & Galina's VAs changing than Canach's.

No need to be best, only good and kind.
Well that sucks.
Hate Is Fuel.
The new VA DOES nail down Canach's cadence and rhythm, but the soul of Canach is not there. It is what it is being Covid times, and the new VA really did do a great job, but I can't help but hear it as Lord Faren doing a spot on Canach impersonation rather than it being Canach.
Yep, you're correct; Matthew Mercer is voicing Canach now.

Look at your life
Are you who you want to be?
This is your life
Is it everything you dreamed it would be?
I am quite sad, as Canach is my favourite character to interact with. Such a shame the character has been recast.
Did Rox change too or am I just misremembering her voice?
Canach was my favourite character.
But this new Canach easily gravitates to the bottom.
And we lost Braham as well.
With Almorra being killed off earlier in Season 5 and Rytlock deteriorating over the whole Saga, all my favourite NPCs are gone.
But maybe Rytlock will recover in EoD.
I wasn't impressed, in fact I was outright disappointed. Kinda like how most of IBS has disappointed me.
Hate Is Fuel.
Yes, after some difficulties between ANet and the actress.
This season nearly all VAs changed including some of the player characters (Human male and Charr female, I think).
Some of these changes started last season with Rox, Almorra, etc.
I think they're trying to switch to mostly in-house VAs (with a few exceptions), which will be cheaper and better in the long-run. Big name VAs have severe scheduling restrictions and higher priorities to meet, which is why Zojja disappeared.
Now if only they'd recast her..
I'm honestly surprised players are complaining so much when last year we had no voice acting at all.

Canach is my favorite character in the game, because his attitude and John DiMaggio's delivery. This isn't Canach anymore if Matt Mercer can't pull it off in the future.
Icebrood Saga weapon collections cost 10500 Gold to craft! Including new Fiery/Icy Weapons!
*Does not include Volcanic Stormcaller set.
We'll see how it turns out with Canach's next few appearances. DiMaggio MADE Canach work with pitch perfect, snarky delivery.
Rox's change was really grating (the raspy tone that makes me want to clear my own throat). Canach's change will at worst mean we won't be greeted with that Sylvari spice from now on.

So you would rather have the character to disappear from the story, like Zojja? I will take any recast any day if it means the character will continue appearing in the story. It is a shame that the original VA is not available anymore, but that's not Anet's fault.
I didn't even realize it was a different VA at first. It wasn't until I was about half-way through the mission I noticed he sounded a little different. A character never really feels the same when they get recast, but I like Matt and I think he did a pretty good job.
Oh, I'm sorry. Could you point me to the text where I said that?
Tbh the original Canach spice made literally any story content good & entertaining.
It was a Morgan Freeman / Neil Tyson effect. You just wanted to listen to him.

The voice also changed in french
I also liked the one we had. Was it for the same reason or because the english one changed?
(rox sounded a little different too)
edit : there is just a weird thing were my female charr voice changes only for the fire citadel.
Yes...I'm torn. On one hand, the new VA is clearly trying, and sounds a bit more...elegant? Dignified? Which, isn't bad, but doesn't suit Canach as much. And the snarky edge has been mostly lost..hopefully as time goes on, the new VA can work it back in, but...well, we'll see. Or hear.
It's fine. This is much better than a character simply disappearing. The new VA did a good job. As much as I would prefer that we never change VA's, life happens. Anet is doing great considering all the real world complications like layoffs and the pandemic.
The next time you get angry at someone try walking a mile in their shoes. After that, who cares! You're a mile away and you have their shoes! -Someone with more awesome quotes than me
I think it's good. Naturally, it is strange at first because Canach had a really distinct voice and delivery but the new guy did a good job coming close to it.
Please please please get Mathew Mercer to make Canarch say its high noon.
Snarky timing was off and that is what makes Canach
Even Lord Faren is closer to the proper Canach than this new one is.
To me it's neither a good job nor even remotely coming close.
New actor? Sounds different.
Yes, changed from John DiMaggio to Matthew Mercer.
Bonus fun fact, if you play a Male Norn, you can have Matthew Mercer have a conversation with Matthew Mercer.

Pity, I liked the original voice, sophisticated and driven. Really one of my favorite characters. I am sure I will get used to this voice but still.
I absolutely hate this new VA.
To me it's worse than just leaving him in the same off-screen limbo as Zojja.
He went from top NPC straight down to bottom-tier.
Oh, maybe you can settle something for me and a few of my friends.
Laranthir, right? Secondborn. Mentions that he's looked for love all his life and had no luck as one of his first pieces of dialogue. Does Vigil things in Heart of Thorns. Has a great time blowing things up with explosives. Has a less great time cutting down his fellow Sylvari and essentially killing his own creator. Decides to take a hiatus/vacation in the Grove/Caledon Forest by the time Icebrood Saga rolls around.
Then Canach. Secondborn. Does commander things during Heart of Thorns. Has a great time blowing things up with explosives. Has a less great time cutting down his fellow Sylvari and literally fighting a twisted version of himself in his creator's mind. Decides to campaign in Path of Fire and then bury himself in the nearest casino. Inexplicably reappears in Central Tyria, specifically in Caledon. Hesitates for a long, awkward moment when asked what (or who) he's doing there.
Did Laranthir and Canach meet during Heart of Thorns, part ways, and later reunite in Caledon? Are they dating? Did they reach for the same grenade one day and accidentally touch hands? Enquiring minds want to know!
Also, to the point of the new VA, Matt nails the Canach cadence, it's just the tone of voice we'll have to get used to. In terms of lore, let's also remember he completely changed his face, glow, foliage, and bodytype, so if he can adjust his voice over time as well, that tracks.
Yep. While Matthew Mercer is not a bad voice actor, he doesn't really do this specific character justice.
The whole point of a social game is to play with the people you want to play with, not be forced to play with the people you don't.
Didn't really like Canach's voice change in this episode, as it sounded kind of like he was bored, rather than his usual snarky, witty self, but hopefully I'll just get used to it (Canach was definitely one of my favorite characters in previous episodes).
...Said everyone who disliked a voice actor change in any game.
Are you for real?
yes
This new Canach is an insult to how he was before.
I like the old voice actor. Not at the point of the story where the new one appears. Is a reason mentioned for this anywhere? (Old voice actor ill/dead? Or did he quit to do other work. I can't imagine ArenaNet willingly having replaced him cause he is so great.)
Edit: Ah I see. In the other thread it was mentioned. Scheduling conflict and sadly he didn't have time to voice Canach anymore.
As long as Canach remains a sassy snarky... you get the point xD
I am fine with the change.
What I will say though is that if a character as beloved and popular as Canach can get a recast then Anet have absolutely NO! excuse for neglecting Zojja for most of a decade.
Recast her Anet and bring her back.
I'm fine with recasts if that means the character will not disappear
Sure. Because this is one of the more common reasons why people might dislike the change. With the second one being when the new voice actor is just plain worse.
Obviously, if the change is for the better, people do not complain.
The whole point of a social game is to play with the people you want to play with, not be forced to play with the people you don't.
So, are they worse, or did you just prefer the old one because of reasons? If you started playing now, would you get attached to the new actor without caring about old one, and could you say the same if you heard the old actor afterwards?
Maybe. You can tell Mathew Mercer is trying to imitate the old voice, but it doesn't come off as natural/his accent slips a lot.
But that's the trouble with long running roles, I suppose. Actors move on, but the characters don't.
At least, that's my opinion.
There are cases when the actor makes the role. This is one of those cases - one of the primary reasons why i liked Canach was due to his voice actor and the way he shaped Canach's character. I can't be sure that if Matthew Mercer was doing it from the beginning, putting his own personal touches on the character, i would not like that Canach too, but i can be sure that it would have been a very, very different Canach. At being DiMaggio's Canach, Mercer is worse, and that's hardly a surprise.
Basically, being a good voice actor does not mean you can fit in every role - especially one that has been heavily shaped by the acting of previous voice actor.
Notice, though, that this kind of reasoning does not necessarily hold true for all GW2 voiced characters, because in most the way they speak is not really as important to how they're perceived.
