No more chore-I mean "hearts" please!

Recommended Posts

This game was supposed to not be like other MMO's where you go to some quest hub, pick up a bunch of grindy chores, then do them and turn in.

but in beta players coming from World of Warcraft couldn't figure out what to do when they didn't have "quests" so.. Arenanet made renown hearts to give them chores to do in event heavy areas to guide them to events.

They were supposed to be kind of tutorials.. that you were eventually weaned off of

it'd have been perfect if they'd only gone up to the level 25 zones and never came back..

but at least at Orr it seemed like they were gone, they were gone from HoT

but then someone thought it'd be a good idea to bring chores back, and not only back, but had to be repeated every day.

what's worse than already repetitive tedious chores?

why having them reset as dailies of course!

they don't add anything to the game, they're not fun or engaging, and making them extra repetitive just makes them less so.

This game is supposed to be about dynamic events, not static quests

so can we please stop with them already?  or at the very least not make them required for map completion or meta achievements?

I like them better for telling a story and helping to flesh out the world. Especially combined with the event system. Traditional quests are very point A-B-C. Most hearts have you doing multiple things simultaneously as part of story for that area. I feel this is much more organic than being spoon fed small bits at a time, and far more immersive.

Hearts don't tell a story they're literally chores.

There's no hearts in Straights of Devestation, Malchor's Leap or Cursed Shore.

There's no hearts in Southsun Cove.

There's no hearts in Dry top or Silverwastes.

There's no hearts in Verdant Brink, Auric Basin, Tangled Depths or Dragon's Stand.

There's no hearts in Bloodstone Fen.

There's no hearts in Dragonfall.

There's no hearts in Grothmar Valley, Bjora Marches, or Drizzlewood Coast.

Hearts haven't appeared at all since the end of Living World Season 4. A total of 16 ~lv80 maps have hearts, and a total of 14 ~lv80 maps lack hearts, so the ratio is only around 60% at most.

On one of these maps (Frostgorge Sound) they're not even repeatable.

Speak with the NPC.

That’s nice that you do not like them but you do not speak for everyone. If you do not like them then simply ignore them. Just be prepared to not get any rewards tied to them.

Events do a far better job at telling a story than chores.

I dislike hearts immensely. I think they're absolutely the worst content in the game. I understand why they were introduced, but the fact is they weren't actually meant to be in the game and the first two betas didn't have them. They were only added in the third beta because apparently people from other games couldn't function without marks on their map telling them where to go.

Hearts were intentionally removed as was always the plan.

But people on these forums asked for hearts. They didn't just ask for hearts, they asked for repeatable hearts.  People say Anet doesn't listen to the community but that time they listened, and I believe they shouldn't have. Hearts serve no real purpose in the game except to slow down map completion, by doing something mundane.

Fortunately most hearts can be filled or mostly filled by doing events in the corresponding areas, but even then, hanging around a heart area waiting for an event, when I could be doing something else is annoying.

It's not like we have 3 hearts in the game we have to do. There are 303 hearts in the core game. Having done over 15 world completes, I have to tell you, hearts aren't fun for me, they're a terrible drag. I seriously doubt anyone can like them more than I dislike them.

I probably dislike them just as much as you, especially ones like the pirate one in Istan where you can't just kill mobs in the area or do events.. but have to do their dumb chores like finding water buckets to wake up passed out pirates.  It's very tedious and progresses slowly.

there are a ton of other MMO's focused on that empty headed bland gameplay style.

But that's untrue. Dynamic events can't be literally the entire design of the game when the game also contains hearts, can it?

I don't mind the hearts as long as there's not too many in a map. But for example in Lake Doric, some of those hearts are difficult to complete. What I mean with difficult is that when there are no events, you have to really look for things to complete the heart with and killing a mob barely makes a difference on the progress. And I also hate doing really "dumb" tasks like changing into a pig to find truffles or something like that.

So hearts by themselves don't really bother me but when you have to do 10+ to complete a map or when it's something ridiculous then I get annoyed with em. I'd say that the Ascalon maps are the worst offenders.

Some are bad but by removing them entirely you are forgetting some great one imo like: gravity chamber, keg tossing, quick delivery before a rabbit kick you and tossing snowballs "gently" at children. I hope in the future Anet will be more creative, and also wont do the same thing with funerary incense.

At least its better than walking back to quest giver miles away.

I remember they were very proud that GW2 wouldn't have any fetch quests or kill x mobs or escort quests. Of course they hid the first 2 in hearts and the latter they hid under events. They're not quests in GW2 but you still get to do a ton of it.

Then. Don’t. Do. Hearts.

You literally have to. Want goodies from any of the repeatable heart vendors? Guess what you have to do.

I dont have any issue with hearts, love em, they add flavor. Repeatable hearts that lock the vendor, annoy the kitten out of me, those should not be a thing.

Do you mean the one where you have to slip past Ash legion scouts unnoticed? If that's the one then i agree, it's probably the most frustrating heart quest in the game. 😩

You can cheese that one 🙂
