So What Do We Do With Our New Siege Turtles?

Recommended Posts

A number of folks here on the forum pooh-poohed fishing and skiffs. Yet I see people fishing from their skiffs on maps all over Tyria. A lot of folks were excited about the siege turtles, yet I rarely see one ingame. That makes me wonder. What are our turtles actually good for, aside from the one phase of the DE meta where they are handy for bashing gates and bubbles? That's not a sarcastic or ironic question by the way. I really am wondering what to do with my new mount. It's too slow to use for getting around. It seems like overkill to use on core Tyria maps, even for the world bosses and such. What are folks using their turtles for?

  • Chichimec.9364 changed the title to So What Do We Do With Our New Siege Turtles?

So far we learned they are used for events where you have to destroy things and Turtles make it possible in first place or simply make it faster. My take is Anet will add more ways to deploy them in future content. No point in rushing this type of content out if 99% of the playerbase didnt had access to the turtle prior the various fixes and prior the playerbase learned to just deal with it and start using subgroups and some proper boon spread

Hmm, a combat mount that can't mount in combat and also sucks at doing DPS. I'd say the best use case for this mastery is the +50% HP boost for your other mounts.

the siege turtle and cannons deal bonus damage to anything with the 'reinforced' buff, which is primarily used in three locations, the rubble and shields in dragon's end, Fort aspenwood in echovald wilds, and the gates in drizzlewood coast. (unfortunately the siege turtle does not do damage to taidha covington's gate, tested it myself)

other than those two examples, there isn't an efficient use of the turtle, but it's fun to roam around with the siege turtle and a friend blasting things to pieces and taxing around people who may have a hard time reaching certain places. a siege turtle with upgraded jump jets gets almost as high as a springer with an upgraded high vault, so many (but not all) locations in path of fire (and end of dragons since you can get the springer in EoD) built for springers can be maneuvered by a siege turtle too. the siege turtle's slam also deals defiance bar damage, so useful against enemies that have them up all the time, i don't think the siege turtle's slam is quite fast enough to deal defiance bar damage to bosses with temporary defiance bars.

but honestly, it's mostly a 'make of it what you will' mount, since it's not optimized for most locations.

Walking tour of Queensdale. Stop-offs include:

- "Bandits are attacking the ranch"
- "Vic the Iron is up, pls help"
- Shaemoor Cemetery: Lady In White Episode
- "Y'hear that? The sound of the giant boar?"
- "Are you strong of body or weak of will? Best me in a contest of strength and win a prize!"
and
- "When SB?"

In seriousness though, I have no idea what the turt is good for that other mounts and mechanics don't already do adequately but maybe once more people have them we'll start seeing creative uses. Maybe.

  1. skiffs are mandatory for fishing most places, if you allow fishing on skimmer you'll never see another skiff again.
  2. if the skiff was locked behind DE, it would have had the same treatment as the turtle
  3. yes most existing content dont need the turtle, going forward anet will probably make more content for it.

Thanks. These seem to be the only practical uses so far - breaking siege stuff in Dragon's End and Drizzlewood, using the the turtle's high jump to help other players get to places they otherwise might not be able to get to, using the slam on long lasting defiance bars, and running around with friends blasting stuff just for the fun of it.

And hopefully we will get future content with more ways to use the turtles.

Is it just me, or does all this seem pretty sparse for a mount that was so heavily promoted and, initially at least, that was also so hard to get?

I started levelling Engineer a few days ago and I noticed Siege Turtles have ridiculously high aoe dmg. The ppl using turtles in events in <50 core Tyria maps were oneshotting entire waves of mobs in defend/escort events. It made tagging mobs for exp a pain especially when you're levelling a character. I can see turtles replacing raptors for extreme aoe dmg mob clearing in events once more people get their turtles.

Thanks for the heads up on that. It seems kinda rude to me to one shot mobs like that on low level maps. For the high end maps though, that does sound like another  good, practical use for our turtles.

Keep in mind that what has been described here requires 2 players. 2 players with good ranged AoE could easily do the same thing and if you only have one person in the mount then you can't even one-shot a skritt in Metrica Province with it. Also, even downscaled trash mobs in EoD areas have between 30-45k HP making them rather slow kills if you only use slam.

I totally expected they were going to be unlocked early in the story, and there would be events that significantly used them throughout the new zones.

Still scratching my head about what we got instead.

My thoughts, exactely.

Masteries/Mounts/Gliding/Mushrooms etc. in HoT and PoF are a way of personal progression in a Metroidvania style in the maps.

The turtle mount could have been a single player mount where a passenger is optional. But Anet made it a mount that unlocks its full potential only when two players are using it. This is not really useful for personal progression, so they seem to trashed the ideas from Hot/PoF and tried to make it somehow "optional" and instead "prestige" to sells skins and increase participation in the DE map meta and EoD-strikes.

Oh hell and these low level events  are already a pain in the kitten because of raptors 😞

I did too. I really expected to them to be **part of** the story and required for events.

Fort Aspenwood in Echovald requires the use of them as well for most of the entire encounter.

Fort Aspenwood in Echovald and Drizzlewood Coast are two use cases of this. I am very sure they are going to add more in the future. I've found other uses for the thing such as transporting friends through dangerous stuff in game being significantly easier.
