Do you use your Turtle?

Recommended Posts

Yes and yes. Both used daily. I bring my turtles into Meta. Sometimes I wld taxi people around. Unlike other mounts, it is durable and doesn't change back after an attack. Sometimes I use the turtle to sink into deep ocean just for fun and look for nodes, chest and loots. 💚I enjoyed the fact it is different from all other mounts. I also liked how it moves. And very much enjoy bodysmashing mobs with hard turtle shells. 😁 Go go turtle power!

Yes, unlocked it just after the March 15th patch. I'm a "mount collector" in MMOs so I had to get it to complete the set. I use it during some fights and for CC in serious situations. Other than that I run around with it squishing mobs and messing around basically. It's buggy though, I still get booted off the mount once in a while if I try to use the Slam attack from high up in the air. I'm not sure how to reproduce this, it just happens sometimes and it's very annoying. Sometimes it'll glitch with another rider in the back and freeze up all animations until the Slam cooldown is over.

My bf and I enjoyed it a lot as one driving and one gunner.  It is effective in farming mobs and destroying objects like debris, walls or turrets.  A bit disappointed that it can't be used in wvw.  BUT today we tried using it and it would not regen ammo no matter how much he twirled, spun, ran or slammed - so the new update made it completely useless.  Was fun while it lasted tho.  An all turtle lake doric leather pony genocide farm would've been fun in the future had it still regenerated ammo at some sort of a pace.  it was also effective in flying a new player w/o skyskale around to get HPs if we didn't want to get our mesmers to portal.  I saw no mention of the changes in the release notes what the kitten happened?

Not really, I just got it so I could complete the mastery points (otherwise it keeps you from gaining xp in EoD for spirit shards). Also not using my skiff a whole lot. I tried fishing, but it's so cumbersome that I lost interest in it. And for anything else I prefer using the skimmer on/in water. It's easier to access and can go underwater.

I wonder, does the turtle work well for shatterer with those healing crystals? Maybe p1 Teq? Maybe jormag?

I can see a bunch of world bosses that could benefit from artillery support.

Dunno, if it counts as cc then it might be. It doesn't require a turtle to do cc, but it might get people to inadvertently use cc.

I enjoyed the novelty of it for maybe a week.
No, I never use it. Being the driver doesn't excite me because the thing steers like a dumpster truck and there are just so many better mounts to get from A to B. Being a gunner isn't exciting because you have to wait for the dumpster truck to move so you get ammo so you can shoot things. Sure, there are a few metas where one, maybe two turtles are usefull, but outside of clearing obstacles especially created for the turtle to clear, the turtle is useless. A Waste of recources. For the dev time that went into that thing, maybe we could have a 100 or 150 player cap on Cantha maps. Who knows.

What do you expect no mount will outshine a flying mount. The other mounts can't hold a candle to a flying mount. Raptor  (long jump) & Springer (jump) are useless due to flying. If you're lucky you may find a portal that might be useful for the Jackal. Beetle speed can be nice for a quick but becomes less controllable and requires open space. Griffon became obsolete once the Skyscale was released. Sure, you could fly really fast if you're able to get the height.

Skimmer while useless on land is wonderful underwater. It would be the best mount if wasn't for the WarClaw and not a slightly late Apirl fools joke for you. Each mount before the Skyscale at least had some kind of function that made having one more useful than your standard walking + weapon skills for movement.

The problem is the Skyscale more less does it all. Raptor & Jackle movement is nearly the same as Skyscale. Springer actual has less height than Skyscale even when max jump and that's not counting even being able to gain energy back to fly even higher. While mounts were slightly more even before Skyscale you could achieve the same results with Griffon being the more powerful mount at the time. Griffon double jump was nearly as great and if you used platforms correctly, you can easily climb heights with it.

I don't think the other mounts are completely obsoleted by the Skyscale.  On many maps the Beetle will get you to a far away place far faster than the Skyscale.  In the Dragon's End map, where the preparation events spawn in alternate corners of the map, the Skyscale is tedious while the Beetle is fine, even a bit fun.  The dismount action on the Raptor also makes it useful when dealing with mobs.  The only time I use the Jackal is the race event in the maze at Halloween.  The bunny can be used to deliver some CC on dismount but I rarely use it unless a commander asks for it.  The other day I had some fun in Dragon's End climbing up to a high elevation in the center of the map and then using the Griffon to speed to the events as they popped up, and the airship waypoint during the meta makes the Griffon useful and fun.  That said, one of the most relaxing things to do in the game for me is gliding the Skyscale around (descending at an angle where the wings don't flap) from a high elevation, for example the canopy in Verdant Brink or the airship in Dragon's End.  The Turtle I have only used in Dragon's End and Drizzlewood so far.  The slam attack is so slow, and it is annoying that the time before you can use the jets again is slightly longer than the time for the slam skill to refresh.

If I could only have one mount it would definitely be the Skyscale but I still enjoy the other mounts occasionally.

I think it would be pretty cool if they added some Jackal portals to Dragon's End to make it easier to get from event to event.  Say a portal from the center to each of the side escorts or a portal on the airship that zapped you to the platform or at least close to the platform.

I just dismounted and did my normal skills, the slam, even when the player mounted the canons, just sucks.

Then you were doing it wrong. It's only useful on the south phase for destroying structures during base takeovers. It's absolutely OP for that purpose, I was with a small group (piloting my own turtle) and we absolutely speedran the "destroy the enemy's stuff" phase.

That said, outside of very niche uses like that, I also find the turtle largely useless as a mostly solo player. If we either (1) got a weaker version of the cannons to use while we're driving the turtle, or (2) got an option to "anchor" the turtle and aim the guns ourselves at the cost of mobility and ammo recharge, it might see some more use from me.

But outside of that, utterly useless.

Skyscale, Griffon, and Beetle were the mobility and terrain kings. The siege turtle does not give an advantage dmg or terrain wise, but it does provide an advantage for you in new situations you might not be familiar with. Let me explain. If you are in unfamiliar territory or at a boss fight, You might not know what to expect, especially in some of the more deadly areas of Tyria. You have  a much greater amount of HP on the turtle mount so it provides a safer way to explore and can be used  to learn the mechanics of a boss or area so you don't get downed quite as fast. This will not apply as much to seasoned players but even for vets, its kind of nice to chill in one for a while. I can also see it being useful for times when there is unavoidable damage.
