It's just weird in my honest opinion. ArenaNet and other company's need to make it where the person playing needs to submit their Social Security and Birth Certificate which would gender lock their character to what they are in real life. That would be amazing. It would stop all the weird Catfishing....

It would just make things worse.

People who follow the rules are somewhat inconvenienced by having their choices reduced while the bad actors now get a veneer authenticity.

Scammers are going to scam. Identify theft is a thing.

The first MMORPG I played was Ragnarok Online. In it's native South Korea it required a Resident Registration Number and the account's gender was locked to that of the associated RRN but then you look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_registration_number#Fraud

Quote

For example, it was found that former South Korean president Roh Moo-hyun's resident registration number was used to gain access to hundreds of pornographic websites, as well as entertainment and gaming websites.

Besides this is an RPG in case anyone has forgotten.  It is the last place anyone should expect the character to be equal to the player.

This game has literal furries, I mean full on 100% in-game furries. That happens in about 1 out of every 100 games on the market, and very rarely in an MMO (most stop at just "catgirls").

So we're not in a position to judge others, not really.

I'm a furry too, but you ain't going to catch my kitten walking around like a sloot.

I just made Kindred from League, she's the closest, but didn't make her to be good looking, just love the roleplay potential.

Given that most male character's outfits in gw2 look like skirts, I don't see much difference.

This, for example, is unconscious sexism. So what if men look feminine? Or wear skirts? Would hate to see you play ffxiv, where ppl dress up their men in women’s clothing.

Most of my characters are opposite gender to me just because I love the voice acting on male charr.

Though I do find it a bit... cringe when I'm surrounded by not-exactly-combat-dressed human females everywhere I go. Definitely getting those 30-year-old virgin living in mum's basement vibes sometimes.

But you do you, it's your characters and your fantasy. Don't let other people tell you how to play dressup.

I have met a few guys who wanted to erp.  I simply told them that I only flirt, nothing more. That seemed to work.  Gender didn't actually enter the conversations. I suspect the fantasy of the flirty toon was what they cared about, not the person behind that avatar.

Never had that before, but I have been solicited in some very overt language.  Didn't bother to report them.  Just said "No, thanks" and blocked them.  Figured I'd worry about reporting if they continued to follow me around, but they didn't.  Maybe they were just trying to be funny.  /shrug

I have had encounters of the kind. As a woman, I find the male aesthetics of the game more pleasant to the eye, so most of my characters are men.

Now, whenever someone is referring to me as the player as "he", I correct them. Everyone seems to assume that, regardless of the gender of your character, the person behind it must be male. So when I say that I am not, I keep getting the most stupid reactions 90% of the time, for instance, "Sure! You're a G.I.R.L. = guy in real life."

You really have to wonder about some male players' mindsets.

Eh, You guys give too much puppy about gender irl or in game. I created characters of all races and each gender to try out different outfits, no other reason.

And i dont care if people call me he/she/they in game too, its only a way of thought delivery. Usually people just call me by my char name or nick name.

Unless you're going to have deep conversations with someone ingame, there's no need for your rl "character" descriptions.

By the six! It is  already 2022 and  almost 2023.  I can't believe there are still some people  who love to look down on anyone who plays  an opposite gender character in the game -  a woman plays  as  a male character and  a man plays  as  a female one. What is wrong with the case much , especially the second one? Since when did it trouble you , harass  your life? Since when did it matter so much? If I prefer creating  the  female characters  to the male ones  and see some outfits  are fitting to them, is that strange much? If you think I created the female ones in order to just look at their arses, act like a woman, be my guest. After all, I can't convince you nor control your thoughts.

Is this a problem? I’m a guy that has played a variety of different-gendered characters in every MMO I’ve played (been playing MMOs for right at 20 years) and have run across maybe one or two situations where someone had an issue with it. In fact, I have more female toons in GW2 than male.

I rarely (if ever) even discuss my IRL gender because… why? Not a common problem in my experience.

I've come across the opposite but I didn't bother doing any sort of correcting because gender was irrelevant to the conversation and at best it would have just distracted from the actual discussion.

The most amusing one was someone calling me big sister while helping them with the HoT story. I assume that was a younger player and to be fair I was on a Norn.

I do expect people to address me in the pronoun according to the gender of my character. The same way I refer to them. I do not divulge my real gender, nor do I care what gender everyone else is. Although all my longtime guildmates probably know from the way I talk.

As far as I'm concerned, I will never meet anyone from a game irl. So it is pointless for anyone to know anything personal about me, be it gender, age, race, etc.

I've been gaming more or less my whole life .. and I can honestly say I have never in my life heard of or seen someone criticize someone else for wanting to play a game as the "opposite gender"

I have heard it the other way around a couple of times though.. least in more modern days, people wanting to play a game as their own gender and generally being met with comments basically saying "too bad" or occasionally accusing them of  some kind of ism but even that isn't all that common.
Mostly I seen that with games that have predefined protagonists and no character creation, most often ones with male leads though I have seen it too with games that have female leads such as the Tomb Raider reboots.

Personally I don't get why some people get so bent out of shape over such trivial nonsense.
You don't have to personally relate to every single fictional character to be able to enjoy their adventures.. and their stories.
The game isn't about you!, it's about them!... it's their story not your life lol
It's just silly XD

Firstly, to the OP -
What? I've literally never seen this in game chat ever. In all my mmo's, WoW, Warhammer online, Rift, GW2, I've never once seen this. is this actually a you problem and you are trying to make it an issue as it currently doesn't exist? Do you constantly bring it up looking for points?
Its not an issue, guys play females and females play guys all the time. its why we play games, to escape reality. Can be whoever or whatever you want online, most will never care unless you make it an issue.

As for myself, I Just always use gender neutral stuff that is just like saying guys ect. Unless I hear a voice or someone tells me otherwise, its pretty easy to pick up quickly whose what gender inrl after just listening to chat for awhile in guilds, which are honestly the only places its ever stated, as in world chat no one cares what you identify as 🙂

But nobody does. All players with female characters are also addressed as "he." All players are always being addressed as male, as though there were no female players.

...okay...and? I'm still trying to puzzle out why this is even a problem. Seriously, why should anyone care what the player behind the character is? Are they expected to magically know the armored dude is actually a lady in real life, and to bend over backwards apologizing when angrily "corrected"? Why does it matter??

Are people so obsessed with their own identity that this is actually important to them? It's a game. You are not playing you in the game. You are playing someone from Tyria who might not even be the same species as you. And even if you were playing the closest representation of yourself in pixel form as you can possibly get...no one else can be, or should be, expected to know that.

Wow. Ever heard of gender awareness? No wonder the majority of pubescent boys who play computer games assume they are only playing with male teammates (and then start hitting on the women as soon as they spot one, which is super unpleasant).

Almost half of the video game population is female, and it's arrogant of males to think this was "their domain."

P.S. Only a man can say that this was not a problem, because he never had to use voice morphing tools to sound like a guy in order to be able to play specific genre games (like CS) in peace and be treated like an equal instead of being constantly harrassed one way or the other.

The problem? Some people can't separate gaming characters from reality. Not everyone are as grounded as we'd like to think or expect.

Although never seen it in GW2 because everyone has so many alts, in earlier MMOs where you just play just one character, you'll encounter it often. Some people can and do get so obsessed with characters of the opposite gender. They idealized and think the player behind the computer screen's personality are exactly the same.

Ever seen PK-ing or fights on Worldchat over a "girl" in MMOs? I have.

I don’t play these kind of games myself as I don’t enjoy pvp. So I can’t speak for those. However I have friends who does. They are female and got no issues like this in those games. Not saying it never happens to them, but they enjoy their time in these games so it can’t be a lot.

It sounds way too dramatic to claim you have to use voice changer in a game to get accepted. I’ve never heard of that ever in my entire online gaming experience.

CS:GO is a nightmare if you go into voice chat with a feminine voice.

But that seems slightly left of the topic of this thread.

Yeah, my wife plays GTA online and sometimes has to take a break if the crud gets too pervasive.

Faceless, consequence free, opportunity will bring out the a-hat in some people, particularly when those people are literally immature.
