except hammer was never been viable in pve and only a niche in pvp... it's not that great for hype

But that is a Conjure skill, not a whole new weapon with totally different weapon skills to use.

You may find its the weapon ele's been waiting for, just like I found sword was when it came out.

So let me get this straight, if they decide for a 2-handed weapon, and a conjure one, why not go for a Greatsword that so many wanted, and go for a "boring" hammer.

I guess we will see soon how cool and viable it will be, but just why?!.

Two-handed swords are not suitable for an elementalist (outside of conjure). Mesmer has already revealed the topic of "waves of energy" from GS.
And the GS itself is a weapon for active combat - directly with the target (not such ground-based AoE as a hammer). Elementalists do not particularly imply the use of weapons as "weapons" (which is required by GS, if you do not copy Mesmer or the existing ult)

The hammer, in turn, is a type of weapon that interacts with the environment, so it is quite suitable for an elementalist in its essence.

Hopefully we get some cool rock hammer skins now at least.  😛

It looks interesting though.  I also like the idea of maybe hitting the floaty ball with the hammer as a source of ranged attacks.  Could be fun.  We'll find out next week.

Sigh, I still don't like it. Hammers are brutish weapons. To me, it just doesn't seem to fit with elementalists. And before anyone dredges up Thor's hammer again, I would like to remind folks that he is an Asgardian WARRIOR. I don't remember seeing any iconic wizards wielding hammers. I may be wrong on that one and would be very much interested in seeing any pictures of one actually wielding a hammer. Swinging a hammer to knock balls of elemental energy around just looks....utterly ridiculous as I try to picture it. For me to even consider this as a viable option, there would have to be obscene amounts of damage or very long ranges involved. For now, until I actually see the details, I will just consider the new expansion to have little specifically for my elementalist. At least there will be a new place to explore and new masteries to play with.

I think this is hitting the proverbial nail on the head: hammer offers more opportunities to interact with the surroundings in interesting ways that fit elementalist well.

We could look at warrior as an example of this. Hammer and mace both have skills whereby you interact with the environment in order to generate an effect such as a shockwave which is what actually strikes the opponent. Bladed weapons, by contrast, are usually just hitting the enemy directly, swinging the weapon and having a projectile come from it, or pointing the weapon at the enemy to fire a beam at them. All of which are things elementalist hammer could do, but hammer also opens up 'slam the ground' animations, 'generate an orb to smack at the enemy' animations if that's really what's being hinted at, and possibly more.

As long as it's not another elite specialisation primarily intended for close fighting.

Who cares about the hammer if its not good it will just use a staff its the orb like object that is significant its something no other ele class has. Dule skills and overloades where never real good elite spec effects but they added something very different to the class it looks like. That is where the real hype is.

I wanted either of the bows cause I'm tired of this class getting pushed into melee. Hammer could be ranged but usually its still a melee weapon overall so I will hold off from ragging on it. Its just with shortbow or longbow you had a decent chance to have skills at the 1000ft range.

Now as to hammer being universally bad, CURRENT hammer on the many classes are bad because they are control weapons usually and the average damage was reduced so you couldn't control and kill in the pvp and wvw areas where that type of gameplay matters more. Rev hammer ranged was a bit too good initially and they overnerfed it to a more piddly state.

I kind of hope its melee or ranged depending on attunement.

Constantly bouncing between attunements as part of the standard rotation was a lot of fun but i kind of feel its been well covered between core, tempest and weaver. Having each of the attunements being situational like a ranged option vs melee or a glass cannon attunement vs a more tanky one and so on would be a nice change. Always felt the class was a bit inflexible and with whats basically 4 weapons it doesn't need to be.

I'd be pretty partial to a full melee hammer spec but i can live without the non existent range of dagger or sword. I wouldn't mind the complication being more in utilities or some slightly weird weapon skills than a really long rotation bouncing between attunements and it feels like a good way to please everyone to some extent.

Guardian hammer is underrated - it's not the "max damage" option, sure, but I've used it to solo content that would have been quite a bit harder with a different weapon due to the sheer amount of AoE, protection, and (with traits) healing that it offers. Warrior hammer is... possibly my favourite warrior weapon conceptually, but at the moment it just doesn't really have the numbers to make it useful.

Scrapper hammer, however, does pretty well for itself.

And I think there is a degree to which elite specialisation weapons are probably less likely to be left in the dust. Warrior hammer in particular has the issue of being on a profession that has a LOT of other options, so it's probably not a big deal if it's underperforming. When reaper greatsword was a meme in competitive, though, it got fixed (eventually).

That's pretty much my thinking too, and hammer is a good weapon for it (although, to be fair, it could be done with greatsword as well). There's a little variation in range with daggers, but that's basically just the variation between 240 range with Lightning Whip and 600 range tickling with Vapor Blade. Would be good to see elementalist get a weapon that allows them to switch between a long-range mode and a melee mode like other professions have. (Well, apart from non-renegade condi revs.)

My husband pointed something out to me when we were speculating about the e-spec. The floating orb-contraption looks very similar to the "device"(?) that was used to depict the Eternal Alchemy in this cinematic.

Here's a screenshot too (not sure how to embed an image): https://i.imgur.com/MgYDKr0.jpg

Makes me think there definitely could be some sort of connection. I'm not going to pretend I know that much about the lore on this, but perhaps it is related to the cosmos? Dragon magic perhaps? Could make for an interesting premise for an elite spec.

They were datamined already ingame.

Datamining and official confirmations are completely different things.

There are so many things that have been datamined in games that never actually got released.

And then there's the possibility that the developers added things on purpose to tease players.

This is spot on I feel. The floating orb is a celestial sphere that represents the longitude and latitude of the universe. Eternal alchemy borrows this idea with magic. The central sphere is surrounded by the different dragon magics. Whats interesting to me is that each color represents opposing forces and the purple and red background of the teaser is actually two opposing force color schemes. Also the 4 elements share themes with dragon magic. My theory is the celestial ministry used dragon jade as a catalyst for this floating orb and the different types of magicks will interact in some way. If we are called celestials ill cry.

Initially I was more under the impression that the ball thingy was a stylized lighting spark, but hey the eternal alchemy theory got me interested and quite frankly super hyped. I don't know how I feel about hitting a tiny ball with a glorified baseball bat though... it just feels weird to me and it does not have the appeal of smashing the ground and creating fissures, streams of lava and general cataclysms.

About what weapon people wanted I was under the impression that bows had the most devotees on this forum even though I was myself in favor of rifles. Anyway, I am fine with the idea of a magical themed hammer to be honest; hopefully it will be more than a staff 2.0. I am also relieved we received a two handed weapon. I am kinda suffocating within the small selection of weapon elementalists have and adding a whole new kit is a fantastic breath of fresh air!

I believe that the design will be something like rev hammer so ranged. They will find a way to differentiate from staff, maybe less combo/blast game, more burst maybe?

I really hope for some game changing mechanic, like different attunements, like instead of fire maybe magma, instead of water ice ecc. Just in order to get rid of the hybrid nature of the class and have a pure DPS spec
