Other MMO: Dragon mount from the Urakon 5man heroic dungeon. After completing the Forgul alliance achievement with the highest possible score. Summon on a full red moon, possible only once a year! Dam respect man, that was a challenge... I love that Mount!

GW2: Dragon Mount 2000 gems from the gemstore.....

Skin.

It's a skin not a mount, the mount itself you earn in game by playing it, as you do with every mount in Gw2.
Only skins are locked behind a gemstore purchase or black lion chest RNG.

And most mount skins in Gw2 are 400 gems with a one time RNG element (you can never get duplicates of them) and are unlocked account wide! which is still cheaper and more efficient than most mount skins you'll get in other MMO's which are usually more expensive, character locked and can be obtained multiple times per account.

Also GW2: Ugly, immersion breaking infusion that transforms your character into a walking graphic glitch, causing FPS loss to nearby players.

That's why i disable everyone else, the amount of VFX + FPS unstable make the game unplayable for me, even with RTX 2060.

Yes, different games prioritise different rewards, that's normal in RPGs, not just MMOs. It sounds like the equivalent of that game's mounts would be something like legendaries in GW2, especially the ones added after gen1 weapons, which are account bound so you have to complete it all yourself. Whereas in my other MMO 'legendary' is just the name of the top tier of normal items, not even really comparable to ascended because you can just buy them from other players and there's nothing like GW2 legendaries. There are skins with special effects (mostly, but not all in the cash shop) but nothing with the same functionality.

Or possibly unlocking the mounts themselves. As @Teratus.2859 said the gem store only sells skins, you have to have already unlocked the mount to use them and especially for the skyscale that can be a long process.

On the other hand my other MMO has character skins which are similar to some GW2 infusions, but they're account bound on acquire, so you know someone with it completed the content (or paid for a carry) rather than buying it directly.

So yeah, different games prioritise different rewards.

If showing off what you've achieved and specific types of rewards are both important to you then I suppose it makes sense to do some research first and find a game which focuses on the type of reward you want to show off, but other than that I'm not sure what point you're making here.

A mount skin doesn't make you prestigious. You honestly believe that anyone is praising people in WoW for having a shiny mount skin? 🙂

There is another prestigious thing in GW2 though. And it's both harder to get than an item drop and shows who's the boss better: anyone with more than 42k achievement points.

(But, to be fair, no one cares about AP either. The only person who feels prestigious is the person who has it, no one else.)

For example, what do u get in gw2 for the achievement Realm Avenger.

For this u need to kill the small number of 250 000 players.

Other MMos would give u a mount or a special item

gw2 gives u a title.

And the most fun stuff is in the gemstore or based on a so low rng that u may never see that drop or u just started play and got it first try... Random.

I hope anet can overthink their reward system a little with EOD.

So basically you're frustrated that you can't show off your achievements.  I played WoW for years, the mounts that dropped or from raid completion were a prestige thing.  You sit around, you show off.  GW2 had a different vibe, it's fashion wars, it's a lot of self satisfaction, and there are many items that are available with higher end content that many players don't have.  Mount skins aren't one of them, Anet has to make money someplace.  If that's important to you, then you're setting yourself up for disappointment because it's unlikely to change.

Well, for me, my Warclaw is one. 🙂 I only do PVE... so I show people they can trust me when I pop up my apple for PVE dailies by going on the one mount with no real PVE abilities. People look at me and say "There is someone who knows how to press the 1 key".

(The tea set is really nice for those long, boring defense events....)

I agree on this point, this is a better explanation than the first point.
They should add more achievements/collection  and recipes, to earn or craft infusions than wait for a random drop, sometimes on totally basic event/champion, or farm money for months to buy it.
Like they did for griffon and skyscale for example, or the  frost legion infusion, the dragon cape ...

You want your festive confetti infusion ? Random drop, BLTP, or you need to do some quests/collections on the map, do something special during casino event and Choya bounty; etc.

ppl missing the point of this forum post and white knighting all day

Tell me what is ur prestige item u own?

I wait... 🙂

As I said in my last post legendaries are the obvious answer to that. Each one has it's own set of requirements which has to be completed to get them. I suppose also things like the gold Fractal weapons, but then it depends on what you consider impressive enough to be a 'prestige' item and not just a drop from a specific area.

But for me what's more important is the things I have good memories of getting. For example although the skyscale is my favourite mount because I love dragons, but I have more good memories of unlocking the griffon because I did a lot of it together with people from my guilds. Some of them already had it and were just helping out, others were working on it at the same time I was and we had some good times completing those achievements together. I really want to finish the Return achievements for the new legendary because I've always done the new Living World releases when they first come out and that will be a sort of confirmation that I've done them all up to this point. My mini llama is one of my favourite mini pets, not because it was hard to get but because it required convincing 4 friends to enter a PvP tournament with me when none of us had much PvP experience and our chances of winning anything were incredibly low. We got through that first round by blind luck, got utterly slaughtered in the second round but we were all so happy we'd gotten far enough to get the minis.

If someone wants to show off or judge other players on specific criteria there will be ways of doing that - like the titles you mentioned already. If that achievement is important to you then you can show that title. If you want someone else to prove they've done it they can show the title. But that doesn't mean those things will always be important to everyone or that anyone around you will care about the things you do or know why they're important to you.

There's two conflicting demands among the playerbase:

  • Players that focus on (perceived) prestige in "hard to get" rewards like skins, mounts, top tier equipment, and similar. These players usually ask for unique rewards gated behind specific content, either through challenge or random drop (which is a proxy for "invested the time to repeat the content until you got the drop").
  • Players that focus on what kind of content they enjoy playing. To those players, accessibility of whatever rewards appeal to them (skins they find visually pleasing/matching their character, fun gadgets, but also good equipment that allows them the same advantages playing the game as other players that prioritize different playstyles) is more important than exclusivity of rewards.

Most MMORPGs I have played focus on the first kind of player. GW2 on the other hand has a strong focus on the 2nd kind. Switching the reward system to more unique rewards that force you to play (or even grind) specific content, will most certainly not be mutually welcome, since that automatically means more rewards gated from people that don't enjoy the specific content the rewards are tied to.

If you really want rewards with extrinsic value (prestige) you will have a bad time in GW2. The game does not cater to that population at all. It can’t actually. The payment model for the game is based upon selling you shiny things in the cash shop. The end game progression revolves around gathering shiny things. They can’t sell you things if in-game items are equally as shiny and have more prestige.

It’s a contradiction that can only exist if you don’t really care about the extrinsic. I do care, but not solely and I also get other things out of the game. If rewards mean nothing to you, or only matter to the intrinsic value you get from it, then it’s a great game for you.

But you can get Realm Avenger with running around with zergs and doing fairly little work.  I have almost 10,000 kills and I don't play nearly as much as many of my friends and I'm by no means a great WvWer.  If you spend enough time with zergs in WvW you'll probably get that title.

Ship of Theseus my dude.  Some of you making these claims really need to think about what you're saying.  How is a mount and a skin different in any way.  The skin is the virtual representation of the mount.  The mount is just the word associating the pixels of "skin" with a real life "mount".  The prestige is the same in the skin as it is in the mount.

The liadri mini is probably the closest I can think of.  Raid armor too.

You can get your credit card out and buy as many skins as you like, but unless you do the content to earn the mount, they are useless. Granted. for most of the mounts, the effort to earn them is minimal; skyscale is the notable exception. And guess what, we have frequent threads complaining it is too much work.

Because you have to unlock the mount before you can use the skin. If you just buy a skyscale skin from the gem store without unlocking the base mount you can't use it.

It would be like buying a really nice case for an iPhone without buying the phone, you couldn't do anything with it. Except then you could at least show people the case, you can't even do that with a mount skin until you have the mount.

That's different to most other MMOs where you buy actual mounts in the cash shop. If I start a new Elder Scrolls Online account, buy some crowns and use them to buy a mount from the cash shop I can use it right away on my first level 1 character, and it will be just as good as any mount obtained in the game. Whereas if I start a new GW2 account, buy some gems and buy a mount skin from the gem store I still have to get to level 80 and unlock the mount before I can use it.
